Chapter 89
Sheilaโs heart leaped at a sudden noise behind her. Instinctively, she whirled around, clutching a medicine bottle to her back. Seeing Joshua, she relaxed, glancing around to confirm their privacy. โIโm just getting some medicine for Jerald,โ she mumbled.
Joshuaโs gaze fell on the bottle she tried to conceal, then on her tense expression. Something was clearly amiss. He frowned. โWhatโs all the secrecy?โ He picked up the bottle, examining it closely.
Sheila whispered, โActually, I was wondering if you knew anyone who could get more of this.โ
Joshua squinted at the label. He wasnโt a pharmacist, but the drug name sounded familiar. It was expensive, he knew, certainly not covered by insurance. โDidnโt Caden already buy this?โ he asked.
โExactly,โ Sheila nodded, her eyes narrowing. โWhy let him take all the credit? Weโre running low, and this stuff works.โ
Joshua raised an eyebrow. โArenโt there plenty left in the box?โ
Sheila leaned closer. โTheyโre fake.โ
He lowered his voice. โI was worried weโd run out, so I bought counterfeits as a backup.โ
โWhat?!โ Joshuaโs stomach churned. โDo you realize how dangerous that is? What if something goes wrong?โ His concern wasn't Jerald's potential death, but the liability.
As he reached for the fakes, Sheila grabbed his arm. โYouโre exaggerating,โ she protested. โI know people who work at the factory. They replicate big-name drugs all the time. They might not be as effective, but no oneโs died from them. And they werenโt cheap โ I paid a lot. Throwing them away is wasteful.โ
Joshua shook his head. โNo. They have to go.โ
Sheilaโs lips pursed. โAnd if Jerald doesnโt take them? Will you let Caden play the hero with the real ones?โ
โHeโs the eldest. Isnโt it his responsibility?โ
โSure, but who was there for Jerald? You. And everyone remembers that. Do you want Caden to steal your thunder?โ
Joshua paused, his thoughts churning. She hadnโt been by Jeraldโs bedside out of concern โ it had been calculated. If Jerald died, she wanted a secure position in the will. If he lived, playing the loyal son would leave a lasting impression. With Caden at odds with Jerald, this was her chance.
โOkay. Iโll think of something. But donโt give him the fakes yet.โ He photographed the bottle. โBy the way, whereโs Alice? I didnโt see her.โ
Sheila snorted. โShe went for a facial. How much money did you give her?โ
Joshua wasnโt in the mood to argue. โStay out of our business,โ he hissed. โIf Lilliana finds out, you know what will happen.โ He called Alicia.
Alicia, having just hidden photos Caden sent her at Monicaโs house, answered casually. โWhatโs up?โ
โWhy arenโt you home yet?โ Joshuaโs tone was impatient.
โIโm on my way,โ she replied, almost ending the call. Remembering her role, she added, โI just left Monicaโs.โ
โOh, okay. I got off early,โ Joshua said urgently. โCome home soon. Letโs spend some time together.โ
Alicia hesitated, sensing his underlying frustration. When she wanted his attention, he was with Lilliana. Now that she didnโt, he was suddenly attentive. But she knew this wasn't genuine.
โOkay, Iโll be right back,โ she said firmly.
โGreat,โ Joshua murmured, relieved. โIโve missed your cooking.โ
Alice almost laughed. Cooking? Again? He and Caden treated her like a servant.
โI should have invited you sooner,โ he joked sarcastically.
โWhat?โ Joshua sounded confused. He cleared his throat. โNothing, I just had dinner with Monica.โ
Alice hung up, amused and annoyed. If he wanted cooking, sheโd provide it โ it was better than the alternative. Sex was the last thing she wanted. She approached Monicaโs door.
โMonica, do you still have that medicine?โ
Monica produced a vial. โYes, he should take it now. It takes a few days to work.โ
โPerfect,โ Alice murmured, a sinister smile playing on her lips. She pocketed the vial. Joshua wanted food? Heโd get it.
