Chapter 54

Alice hadn't realized she'd revealed too much. Her intention had been to provoke Caden, showcasing the book knowing his disdain for dishonesty. During their school years, Caden's popularity had bred both admiration and rivalry. Groups of girls constantly surrounded him, their laughter a vibrant chorus. Quick-tempered and critical, he especially despised manipulative individuals, his sharp rebukes keeping others at a distance.

Caden dismissively turned away. "I'm not interested in that cheap reading material."

Alice leaned back, smiling. "You seemed interested. Perhaps you've developed a taste for deceitful types?"

Caden replied evenly, "And who are you attempting to deceive with those tactics?"

"Certainly not you," Alice retorted.

"That's precisely what I wanted to hear," he said, his expression unreadable.

Approaching the Yates mansion, Alice quickly scanned the book. The author's skill was evident in the clear presentation and highlighted key points. She absorbed a great deal of information during the short drive.

Upon arrival, the sight of the crowded entrance shocked her. "Why are so many cars here?" she asked, curiosity piqued. "Is there a special event?"

Caden, ever aloof, replied, "Jerald was discharged today. He came home this morning, and many relatives came to visit."

This surprised Alice. She knew from Joshua that Jerald was recovering at the mansion, but she hadn't realized his release was today. The open doors revealed a throng of guests bearing lavish gifts, tables overflowing with packages.

Alice glanced at the two books in her bag, considering her next move. Caden closed the car door behind them, his expression inscrutable.

Alice approached him silently. "I didn't know your father was being discharged today, so I didn't bring a gift. Did you bring anything?"

The rustling leaves above cast dappled shadows on Alice's face, softening her features.

"I did," Caden confirmed.

Reassured, Alice noted Caden's characteristic generosity; he seemed to have brought many gifts. Before she could comment, he anticipated her need. "Would you like to borrow a couple of boxes to maintain appearances?"

Alice chuckled softly, appreciating his understanding. "It's clear why you're Mr. Ward. You understand everything."

Caden offered a weak smile. "I may help, but my favors aren't free."

Alice reached for her phone, but Caden quickly interjected, "It's not money I'm interested in."

If not money, then what? Caden looked poised to make an inappropriate request. Alice braced herself, ready to endure embarrassment rather than comply.

As they neared the mansion, Caden spoke. "I simply ask for a few words."

Alice paused, suspicious. "Are you being generous?"

"Sometimes," he replied indifferently.

"What exactly do you want me to say?" Alice asked.

Caden gave her a pointed look. "Miss Bennett, with your eloquence, can you not offer a kind word when seeking a favor?"

Alice hesitated, momentarily confused. Then, after a brief pause, she smiled. "Thank you for your help today, Mr. Ward. I owe you a meal sometime."

Caden nodded nonchalantly, rolling up his sleeves. "That'll do."

Relieved, Alice turned to the trunk. "Where are you headed?" Caden asked.

"I'm going to get the presents."

"They're not in the car. I'm taking them," he informed her.

Confused, Alice stared. "Do you have them with you?"

"Yes, I came with goodwill," Caden said.

Speechless, Alice followed, her expression sour. "You've deceived me!"

Caden remained relaxed. "Isn't goodwill itself a gift?"

"You were just playing with me," Alice replied.

Caden strode forward, his long strides forcing Alice to jog to keep up. Frustrated, she shouted, "Caden, slow down!"

He reached the front doors, his eyes finding Joshua amidst the guests. He stopped abruptly, and Alice, surprised, collided with his back, hitting her forehead. He groaned in pain, clutching his head.

Caden looked over his shoulder at her exaggerated reaction. "Really? That dramatic? It seems 'The Manipulators' Trick' was quite appropriate."

Alice retorted, "What nonsense! I'm actually hurt."

Caden smirked. "Even that answer was perfect."

A deep voice interrupted. "Alice."
