Chapter 44

Alice placed the business card in her purse. โ€œLilliana has a powerful teamโ€”the Green family and Joshua are supporting her,โ€ Alicia said. โ€œI need more evidence before I ask Jeffery for help. How much does he charge?โ€

Gerry paused. โ€œAt least a million.โ€

Alice shuddered at the exorbitant cost. Heโ€™d recently received money from Joshua, payment for a song heโ€™d composed, but significant expenses remained. Could he afford such a large sum?

Noticing her hesitation, Gerry offered, โ€œWhy not sign with me? You could write and sing, and Iโ€™ll ensure youโ€™re well compensated.โ€

Alice shook her head. She appreciated the offer, but it would tie her to the entertainment industry, a path she wasn't certain she wanted. With her ongoing feud with Lilliana, entering show business would be disastrous, potentially harming both herself and Gerry. She wasn't willing to risk it, and Gerry didn't pressure her.

The car pulled up to Alice's house. As she left, Gerry's gaze sharpened, fixing on Caden. โ€œYouโ€™ve been acting strange.โ€

Caden raised an eyebrow, surprised by Gerryโ€™s perceptiveness. โ€œWhat gave me away?โ€

โ€œSeriously? Itโ€™s obvious!โ€ Gerry retorted.

Caden smirked. โ€œSo you saw through the drunk act in the booth?โ€

Gerry paused. โ€œWho said I was faking?โ€

Caden looked at him, a lack of agreement evident in his expression. โ€œWhat exactly seems odd to you?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s how youโ€™re handling this,โ€ Gerry explained. โ€œLilliana struck first, spreading lies and framing Alicia. You have the perfect opportunity to strike back at Joshua, yet youโ€™re doing nothing. Thatโ€™s unlike you.โ€

Gerry, aside from Alicia, possessed the keenest understanding of Caden and Joshuaโ€™s bitter rivalry. He knew why Caden had returnedโ€”he knew all too well.

Disappointment clouded Cadenโ€™s eyes. โ€œI thought you were getting sharper.โ€

Confused, Gerry said, โ€œAre you drunk, or am I? That makes no sense.โ€

Caden stopped playing coy. โ€œIโ€™m not targeting Lilliana because she means nothing to Joshua.โ€

Gerry mockingly placed a hand on Cadenโ€™s forehead. โ€œYou alright, man?โ€

Caden shoved his hand away. โ€œJesus, get off me.โ€

Gerry persisted. โ€œJoshua went all out for Lilliana, and now sheโ€™s irrelevant?โ€

A shadow crossed Cadenโ€™s face. โ€œAlicia is far more important to Joshua.โ€

Gerry was silent. โ€œJoshua nearly pushed Alicia to her breaking point, and sheโ€™s the one who matters?โ€

Caden replied indifferently, โ€œGo to sleep. Stop talking.โ€

Gerry sighed. As absurd as Cadenโ€™s words sounded, he was always efficient; there was always a reason. โ€œIsnโ€™t this the perfect opportunity? Working with Alicia would yield double the results with half the effort.โ€

Caden kept his tone casual. โ€œAlicia wonโ€™t be working with me.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s vulnerable. With your persuasive skills, you canโ€™t convince her?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not persuasion, thatโ€™s manipulation,โ€ Caden stated flatly.

Gerry looked surprised. โ€œCome on, youโ€™re no saint. Why the sudden chivalry?โ€

Caden didnโ€™t respond. Sensing the shift, Gerry cleared his throat. โ€œOkay, forget it. You and Alicia donโ€™t get along. You wouldnโ€™t ally with her.โ€

Suddenly, something clicked. Gerry began searching the car. โ€œDid I forget the present Alicia got me?โ€

Caden asked, โ€œIf you admire talent so much, why not help her now?โ€

Finding the bag, Gerry smiled. โ€œShe wanted to, but she probably doesnโ€™t need my help. She has plenty of ways to handle the Green family this time.โ€

Caden tilted his head, a faint smile playing on his lips. For once, he agreed, even feeling a touch of anticipation.

Gerry took out the scented candles. โ€œI like this scent. Who knew you made candles? What other surprises?โ€

Caden smiled, remaining silent. He knew her talents, but also her flaws. Her kisses wereโ€ฆ lacking, she didnโ€™t handle pain well, and she grew lazy during intimacy. Her sensitivity was offset by a lack of stamina; he could never last long enough. He wondered how he would manage in the future.

Gerry offered a box. โ€œHere, take one.โ€

Caden reached for it, but Gerry snatched it back. โ€œOn second thought, there arenโ€™t many left. Ask Alicia if you want one.โ€

Caden lowered his hand. โ€œThese trinkets only excite you,โ€ he said flatly.

Gerry smiled sarcastically. โ€œOh right, you donโ€™t go for that. You prefer other โ€˜enhancers.โ€™โ€

Caden remained silent. Gerry laughed. โ€œThat girl tonightโ€ฆ seeing her again?โ€

Caden lit a cigarette. โ€œSheโ€™ll come when sheโ€™s ready.โ€

Gerry rolled his eyes. โ€œYou really think you have to wait? Sheโ€™ll probably call first thing tomorrow.โ€

Caden smiled faintly. โ€œHeโ€™s not that easy to fool.โ€

Gerry was taken aback. What kind of woman made Caden act like this?

Once Caden left, Gerry discreetly called the club owner. โ€œMr. Ward didnโ€™t order anything. Just drinks.โ€

Gerry frowned. โ€œAre you sure?โ€

โ€œAbsolutely. If heโ€™d asked for a woman, everyone would know. Nothing was said.โ€

Gerryโ€™s confusion deepened. Who was with Caden?
