Chapter 44
Alice placed the business card in her purse. โLilliana has a powerful teamโthe Green family and Joshua are supporting her,โ Alicia said. โI need more evidence before I ask Jeffery for help. How much does he charge?โ
Gerry paused. โAt least a million.โ
Alice shuddered at the exorbitant cost. Heโd recently received money from Joshua, payment for a song heโd composed, but significant expenses remained. Could he afford such a large sum?
Noticing her hesitation, Gerry offered, โWhy not sign with me? You could write and sing, and Iโll ensure youโre well compensated.โ
Alice shook her head. She appreciated the offer, but it would tie her to the entertainment industry, a path she wasn't certain she wanted. With her ongoing feud with Lilliana, entering show business would be disastrous, potentially harming both herself and Gerry. She wasn't willing to risk it, and Gerry didn't pressure her.
The car pulled up to Alice's house. As she left, Gerry's gaze sharpened, fixing on Caden. โYouโve been acting strange.โ
Caden raised an eyebrow, surprised by Gerryโs perceptiveness. โWhat gave me away?โ
โSeriously? Itโs obvious!โ Gerry retorted.
Caden smirked. โSo you saw through the drunk act in the booth?โ
Gerry paused. โWho said I was faking?โ
Caden looked at him, a lack of agreement evident in his expression. โWhat exactly seems odd to you?โ
โItโs how youโre handling this,โ Gerry explained. โLilliana struck first, spreading lies and framing Alicia. You have the perfect opportunity to strike back at Joshua, yet youโre doing nothing. Thatโs unlike you.โ
Gerry, aside from Alicia, possessed the keenest understanding of Caden and Joshuaโs bitter rivalry. He knew why Caden had returnedโhe knew all too well.
Disappointment clouded Cadenโs eyes. โI thought you were getting sharper.โ
Confused, Gerry said, โAre you drunk, or am I? That makes no sense.โ
Caden stopped playing coy. โIโm not targeting Lilliana because she means nothing to Joshua.โ
Gerry mockingly placed a hand on Cadenโs forehead. โYou alright, man?โ
Caden shoved his hand away. โJesus, get off me.โ
Gerry persisted. โJoshua went all out for Lilliana, and now sheโs irrelevant?โ
A shadow crossed Cadenโs face. โAlicia is far more important to Joshua.โ
Gerry was silent. โJoshua nearly pushed Alicia to her breaking point, and sheโs the one who matters?โ
Caden replied indifferently, โGo to sleep. Stop talking.โ
Gerry sighed. As absurd as Cadenโs words sounded, he was always efficient; there was always a reason. โIsnโt this the perfect opportunity? Working with Alicia would yield double the results with half the effort.โ
Caden kept his tone casual. โAlicia wonโt be working with me.โ
โSheโs vulnerable. With your persuasive skills, you canโt convince her?โ
โThatโs not persuasion, thatโs manipulation,โ Caden stated flatly.
Gerry looked surprised. โCome on, youโre no saint. Why the sudden chivalry?โ
Caden didnโt respond. Sensing the shift, Gerry cleared his throat. โOkay, forget it. You and Alicia donโt get along. You wouldnโt ally with her.โ
Suddenly, something clicked. Gerry began searching the car. โDid I forget the present Alicia got me?โ
Caden asked, โIf you admire talent so much, why not help her now?โ
Finding the bag, Gerry smiled. โShe wanted to, but she probably doesnโt need my help. She has plenty of ways to handle the Green family this time.โ
Caden tilted his head, a faint smile playing on his lips. For once, he agreed, even feeling a touch of anticipation.
Gerry took out the scented candles. โI like this scent. Who knew you made candles? What other surprises?โ
Caden smiled, remaining silent. He knew her talents, but also her flaws. Her kisses wereโฆ lacking, she didnโt handle pain well, and she grew lazy during intimacy. Her sensitivity was offset by a lack of stamina; he could never last long enough. He wondered how he would manage in the future.
Gerry offered a box. โHere, take one.โ
Caden reached for it, but Gerry snatched it back. โOn second thought, there arenโt many left. Ask Alicia if you want one.โ
Caden lowered his hand. โThese trinkets only excite you,โ he said flatly.
Gerry smiled sarcastically. โOh right, you donโt go for that. You prefer other โenhancers.โโ
Caden remained silent. Gerry laughed. โThat girl tonightโฆ seeing her again?โ
Caden lit a cigarette. โSheโll come when sheโs ready.โ
Gerry rolled his eyes. โYou really think you have to wait? Sheโll probably call first thing tomorrow.โ
Caden smiled faintly. โHeโs not that easy to fool.โ
Gerry was taken aback. What kind of woman made Caden act like this?
Once Caden left, Gerry discreetly called the club owner. โMr. Ward didnโt order anything. Just drinks.โ
Gerry frowned. โAre you sure?โ
โAbsolutely. If heโd asked for a woman, everyone would know. Nothing was said.โ
Gerryโs confusion deepened. Who was with Caden?
