Chapter 390

“I’ve contacted his family, but it may take a few days for a response,” Ciara explained. “His parents are imprisoned. I’m unsure how he’s managed all these years, and I don’t know who else to contact.”

Caden showed little interest. He felt Ciara simply needed something to occupy her time, and the boy provided companionship. “Whatever you decide,” he said. “If you can’t reach his family, I’ll file a police report, and he can stay here.”

Ciara readily agreed, adding thoughtfully, “But however much I care for him, he’s still someone else’s child and could leave at any time. A great-grandchild of my own would be more ideal.”

Caden replied, “Then you’ll need patience. I’m not even married yet.”

Ciara urged, “Then you should put more effort into finding a wife.”

Caden glanced at Alicia. “If all goes well, next year. If not, within three years.”

Ciara teased, “Is that to find a wife or to give me a great-grandchild?”

“The latter, of course.”

Alicia was startled. Where did he find such confidence? She subtly stepped on his foot—the same tender spot she’d hit the previous night. He winced.

Ciara, confused, asked, “What’s wrong?”

Caden, feigning nonchalance, continued peeling a crab. “It pinched me.”

Ciara looked uncertain. “Isn’t it cooked?”

“I must be so handsome, it decided to come back to life.”

Ciara stared. “Are you nuts?”

Alicia, unable to contain herself, quietly laughed. Caden grinned, deciding the pain was worth it. He transferred the peeled crab meat to Alicia’s plate. Even though she was full, she politely finished it. Caden, possessing a hearty appetite, devoured his own portion. Ciara watched discreetly, smiling only when he’d finished.

After they ate, Alicia went upstairs to check on Ray. Caden watched her but didn’t immediately follow. “Is that boy close to Alicia?” he asked.

Ciara took a sip of tea. “Not particularly. They met by chance on the street; he’s a distant relative.”

Caden pressed, “Then why did she go upstairs?”

“He has autism. There was a minor disagreement before we returned, and now he’s locked himself in his room, refusing to see anyone. She’s gone to check on him.”
