Listen to this chapter:

Ciara remarked, โ€œCaden always moves with such precision and caution. Itโ€™s rare to see him slip up,โ€ except for that one time he lost control and attacked Joshua. When Caden first returned, Joshua's unbearable arrogance was met with Caden's patient endurance. That changed when Joshua crossed a lineโ€”kidnapping and tormenting Alicia. Caden couldn't let that stand. For her sake, he broke his own rules.

Alicia lowered her gaze, memories of their blissful time at the mountain lodge surfacing, filling her with a familiar ache. Their connection had always been strong, undeniable. But at its core, their bond was delicate, easily fractured. Without the physical intimacy of their relationship, she knew Caden had little reason to continue showing her kindness. Why, then, was he so concerned about Shelia's threats?

Pushing aside her confusion, Alicia refocused. Leaning closer to Ciara, she quietly shared a plan. Ciara nodded confidently. โ€œThat sounds like a solid plan. Itโ€™s Sheliaโ€™s Achillesโ€™ heel.โ€ She added, โ€œAllow me to handle the logistical arrangements. Iโ€™m more familiar with the situation, and it will be easier for me to manage.โ€ Alicia felt relieved by Ciara's eagerness and readily accepted.

By day's end, Ciara announced everything was set, awaiting only Alicia's instructions. Alicia strategically spread word of a late-night gathering, knowing it would attract attention. After the event, she played her part flawlessly, feigning drunkenness as she stumbled out. Her assistant rushed to her side, exclaiming, โ€œMs. Bennett, you really shouldnโ€™t have had so much to drink! You know your limits!โ€

Alicia, surprised by the outburst, automatically replied, โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I promise I wonโ€™t overdo it next time.โ€ The assistant leaned closer, whispering, โ€œMs. Bennett, remember, weโ€™re just putting on a show.โ€ Alicia paused, momentarily shocked. Then it dawned on her: she hadnโ€™t drunk anything. Why, then, the wave of guilt?

Alicia laughed softly and checked the rearview mirror, confirming Shelia was tailing them. She exchanged a meaningful glance with her assistant.

โ€œSeriously? Youโ€™re planning to head back to the office? Itโ€™s so late! Why would you want to pull an all-nighter?โ€ her assistant asked.

Alicia muttered a vague response. Her assistant, with a mock frown, slammed the car door. โ€œFine then! Go back by yourself. Iโ€™m not spending the night working with you!โ€

Without another word, Alicia sped away. Shelia, focused, accelerated to keep pace. Aliciaโ€™s assistant emerged from hiding and sent a quick text: โ€œSheโ€™s on your tail. Stay alert, Ms. Bennett. Iโ€™ll catch up soon.โ€
