Listen to this chapter:

“My driver’s already left,” he said. “Ms. Bennett, since you’re heading my way, could you give me a ride?”

Alicia looked annoyed. What was his deal? Hadn’t they settled this already? Why was he acting this way again? It hadn’t even been twenty days. She was acutely aware of her lingering feelings and knew she couldn’t be around him long. She fabricated an excuse. “I’m not going your way. I have other stops to make.”

“Just drop me off anywhere in the city,” he countered, casually switching on the news channel.

Alicia started to protest, but he interrupted. “My grandmother is one of your best clients. Can’t you do me this small favor?”

Alicia was speechless, silently cursing him. Caden’s lips curled into a slight smile, as if he understood. “Don’t worry,” he said. “This is the last time I’ll ask. Next time I see you, Ms. Bennett, I’ll keep my distance.”

“Buckle up!” Alicia responded coldly.

As they drove, Alicia’s thoughts returned to the bouquet she’d seen at her mother’s grave, leaving her with mixed emotions.

“Why did you bring flowers to my mother’s grave?” Caden asked, idly toying with a feather pendant.

“I happened to be nearby, so I paid my respects.”

Alicia tightened her lips. “Next time, don’t.” Her message was clear: she found his actions unnecessary and unwanted.

He remained silent.

As they approached a corner, Alicia slowed and steered around it. Suddenly, someone ran in front of the car, hitting it with a loud thud. Alicia was momentarily shocked, but quickly got out to investigate. Feeling uneasy, Caden also exited the vehicle.

Just then, the person on the ground produced a bottle and aimed it at Alicia’s face!

“Alicia!” Caden lunged, a low growl escaping him. He moved faster than the liquid spilling from the bottle, wrapping Alicia in his arms just in time to shield her.

A sizzling sound filled the air as the liquid splashed onto Caden, scorching through his clothes with a terrifying hiss. Alicia froze. It was acid. A sharp, stinging smell filled the air, jolting her senses. In an instant, she reacted. She and Caden rolled away from the immediate danger. Her heart pounded as she frantically checked his injuries.
