Chapter 329

“Alicia loves me more,” he said. “Usually, she doesn’t need much persuading; she calms down on her own.”

Gerry smirked. “You’re just trying to make me envious.”

“You brought it up,” Caden replied. He was well aware of Alicia’s deep feelings for him and could boast about it without fear of reprisal. Gerry, realizing this, lost interest and changed the subject.

They played billiards for another two hours. Leaving Warrington, the city still vibrated with life, its lights shimmering on the sea like a mirror. In the distance, fireworks exploded, their noise a constant barrage. Caden stood outside, hands in his pockets, watching the display without interest. The chilly wind bit at his neck, and he realized he’d forgotten his scarf. He’d purposely put it away after a recent argument with Alicia, to avoid reminders of her, yet he hadn’t worn another. The cold now pierced him deeply. He should have been snuggled with Alicia—soft, sweet-smelling—sharing cake and kisses under a warm blanket.

He exhaled a cloud of white breath. Couples strolled past; Caden’s tall frame radiated a profound loneliness.

Back at the apartment, he encountered Hank. “Why didn’t you head home for Christmas?” Hank asked.

“I did,” Hank replied, “but Ms. Bennett sent me back with something for you.”

It was the bank card Caden had offered her, which she’d refused. Caden’s face darkened. “You can go back now.”

“Mr. Ward,” Hank added, “Ms. Bennett mentioned she has a Christmas gift for you.”

Caden was startled. “What is it?”

Hank presented a black box. Caden carried it inside and opened it. Inside was a chip—one specially made for Lina. He wasn’t sure when Alicia had arranged it, but his curiosity about the data it held peaked. He inserted the chip into Lina, the robot, and powered it on. Seeing Lina’s face, which resembled his mother’s, lifted his spirits slightly, softening his expression. He observed that Lina’s movements were smoother, more lifelike, and her gaze seemed to convey emotion. Lina’s refined actions and voice surprised him. He sat, overwhelmed by a whirlwind of emotions. It was all Alicia’s handiwork.
