Chapter 281:
She recognized him from online profiles—a young businessman in his thirties, remarkably sought after. Anticipating this moment, he stopped Alice.
"Miss Bennett, this way, please."
Alice was surprised. "Have you come to greet me personally?"
"For you, Mrs. Bennett, of course." His gaze was kind.
"I hold you in high regard, Mrs. Bennett. Could we speak privately?"
Alice paused, smiling. “If it’s urgent, we can talk here. I have to finalize the payment first. Then I’ll take you to dinner. Is that alright with you?” She skillfully shifted the decision to him, appearing to cede the initiative while maintaining control. As a shrewd businessman, he had little choice but to comply; a private conversation would have to wait. He changed the subject.
“There’s no hurry for payment. It’s merely a jewel. If you like it, Miss Bennett, I’d be happy to give it to you.”
Not far away, Caden, having already paid his bill, watched them with a cold gaze. He stood unconcerned, one hand in his pocket, sleeves rolled to his elbows, revealing prominent veins. His expression was unreadable as he silently observed their interaction.
Maintaining her smile, Alice politely declined the man’s offer. His tone remained warm and welcoming.
“I have no ulterior motives in offering you the jewels, Miss Bennett. I simply wish to be friends. I understand you spent two hundred million dollars today, perhaps to get back at Mr. Ward—which really wasn’t necessary.”
Alice replied, “The gift is too generous; I must decline. Besides, our business interests don’t coincide, so I doubt we’ll have many opportunities to work together.”
The man presented his business card. "I’m currently looking to invest in fine art. Might you offer me an opportunity, Miss Bennett?"
Alice looked down. She treated him as she would any other client. “I’m flattered. Unfortunately, I’m not in a position to offer that opportunity.”
Seeing an opening, the man politely extended his hand.
