Chapter 279:

The auction commenced, the pink gemstone necklace immediately capturing everyone's attention. The auctioneer opened the bidding at $5 million. Caden, relaxed, raised his paddle. “$10 million.” Another bidder countered: “$11 million.” Caden remained calm. Then, “$30 million.” A gasp rippled through the audience. He mused, "Who bids like that?" It felt less like a purchase and more like a display of wealth. While the gem was undeniably beautiful and rare, the price escalated too rapidly, prompting many to question its true value. After all, it was merely an ornament, not an investment. At $30 million, or more, wouldn't something more practical be a wiser purchase?

The room fell silent. The auctioneer inquired, "Any other interested parties? If not, I'll close it. $30 million, going once." At that moment, Alice's clear voice cut through the hush: "$35 million." The auctioneer announced, “Okay, $35 million. Anyone else?” Caden, without haste, countered, “$40 million.”

The crowd leaned forward, captivated by the unfolding bidding war between the two. Caden's recent boldness, frequently seen in his appearances with Alice, had fueled much speculation. Though their relationship remained unconfirmed, their frequent pairings naturally led to rumors. The atmosphere crackled with anticipation, gossip, and curiosity.

Alice sat erect, calmly declaring, “$41 million.” Caden smiled; he desired the jewel but hesitated at the escalating cost. Yet, he stood firm, partly out of defiance. He deliberately bid, “$50 million.”

Monica, visibly nervous, clutched Alice's arm, her fear evident. “We should stop. The gem isn’t even worth five million dollars. Offering $50 million is a huge waste.” Alice straightened, determined not to be outdone. Alice patted Monica reassuringly. "$51 million," she declared, matching the bid. Caden then raised the stakes: “$60 million.”
