Chapter 27
Gerry brought Alicia in at the last minute to help her choose a dress. Unfamiliar with high-end events, she relied entirely on the shop assistantโs suggestions. They finally selected a snow-white mermaid gown, adorned with silver threads, as pure as freshly fallen snow.
The shop assistant smiled. โMiss Bennett, anything would look lovely on you. But this is specialโa limited edition, the only one in Warrington for the next three months. It would be stunning on someone like you.โ
Alicia felt embarrassed by the compliment. โOkay, Iโll try it on.โ
Just as she reached for the robe, Lilliana snatched it. โIs he really the only one in Warrington?โ she asked smugly. โIโll take it, then.โ
Alicia stared, confused, but maintained her composure. โMiss Green, I arrived first.โ
Lillianaโs smile barely faltered. โI like it. Iโll pay more.โ
The saleswoman froze, unsure how to proceed. โMiss Green, we have other dresses that might suit your taste. I could even have one custom-made.โ
Lilliana insisted on the dress Alicia had chosen. โI told you Iโm willing to pay more! Did you not hear me?โ
The shop assistant glanced at the men behind them: Joshua Yates and Gerry Hopkinsโpowerful men no one dared to cross.
Alicia remained silent. Joshua looked at her briefly. โMr. Hopkins, Iโve spoiled Lilliana. She always gets what she wants. Could Miss Bennett choose another dress?โ
Lilliana smiled, feeling victorious. Aliciaโs expression remained unchanged. Gerry smirked. โMiss Bennett? Thatโs rather formal, isnโt it? It hasnโt been that long since your divorce, and youโve already changed how you address her.โ
Joshuaโs lips twitched, but he continued. โItโs an unfortunate coincidence. If youโll allow it, Iโll buy Miss Bennettโs dress as well, as an apology to Lilliana.โ
Aliciaโs lips curved slightly. What a hypocrite. โFirst come, first served. I want this dress, and I wonโt settle for anything else.โ
The two men watched silently; one with an unreadable expression, the other amused, eager to see how things unfolded.
Unwilling to lose, Lilliana asked, โWhatโs the price?โ
โMiss Green, itโs $660,000,โ the clerk replied.
Lilliana scoffed. โIโll offer a million.โ She cast a disdainful glance at Alicia. Since marrying Joshua, Alicia hadnโt received a cent from him; she couldnโt possibly match this.
โTwo million,โ Alicia countered.
Gerryโs eyes lit up. โAlice, youโre covering the expenses, right?โ he asked.
Alice nodded, smiling calmly. Joshuaโs face darkened, irritated by the unnecessary competition.
Lilliana raised her offer. โThree million.โ
โFive million,โ Alice replied instantly.
โEight million!โ Lilliana shot back.
Alice paused, her gaze briefly returning to the dress. Certain of victory, Lilliana told the clerk, โTake it. Itโs mine.โ
Alicia stepped forward, stopping Lilliana. Taking a deep breath, she said quietly but firmly, โIโll pay ten million.โ
Lilliana grimaced, incredulous. โCan you really afford ten million?โ
Alicia bit her lip. โBut, Miss Green, I really want this dress. Iโd even add another million if youโd let me have it.โ
Lillianaโs laughter filled the room, her arrogance intensifying. She rejected Aliciaโs offer. โIโll pay fifteen million. This dress will be mine.โ
Aliciaโs expression softened; her eyebrows relaxed as she smiled. โOkay,โ she said dismissively. โItโs yours.โ
Lilliana froze. Gerry erupted in laughter. He glanced at Joshua, whose expression had darkened, adding with a grimace, โMiss Green certainly knows how to spend.โ
It was nonsense. Lilliana realized too late sheโd fallen into Aliciaโs trap. Frustration consumed her. The dress cost just over six hundred thousand; its production cost was less than one hundred thousand, and now she owed fifteen million. She felt foolish. Yet, her pride prevented her from backing down.
Meanwhile, Alicia browsed and chose a light blue dress, adorned with small diamonds. โIโll take this one,โ she announced.
Lilliana clenched her jaw. Joshua, with a grim expression, said to Lilliana, โNext time, donโt be so reckless.โ
Lilliana pouted. โThat bitch set me up!โ
Joshua frowned. โWatch your words. Remember who you are.โ
Gerry cleared his throat. โMr. Yates, didnโt you say youโd cover Aliciaโs dress as well?โ
Joshua felt a lump in his throat. โYes, I did.โ
Alicia didnโt hesitate. She grabbed the dress and walked out.
In the car, Gerry laughed at Lilliana and Joshuaโs expressions. โItโs a shame Caden wasnโt here to witness this,โ she added. โYou should see who heโs been spending his money on.โ
Gerry immediately called Caden, enthusiastically recounting the scene. Caden interrupted. โDo you know any porn sites?โ
Silence fell. Gerry looked at Alicia, quickly turning off the speakerphone and whispering, โYeah, why?โ
Caden snapped, โGo look them up and stop calling me, you idiot. Youโre getting on my nerves.โ
