Chapter 268:
His voice deepened, becoming intimidating. "I haven't the patience to soothe anyone. Couples waste time dwelling on misunderstandings, but I don't. Avoid unnecessary confusion."
Alice let out a bitter laugh. "You're overestimating yourself. I'm not important enough for such consideration."
He rubbed his eyes, the cold wind having dried them. He refused to cry. "That's all I wanted to say. I won't bother you again." With that, he deleted her number from his emergency contacts without hesitation.
She sat by the road for a long time until the police arrived. After having her wounds bandaged at the hospital, she went to the police station to give a statement. She ignored all of Caden's calls later that day. That evening, she booked a flight back to Warrington.
Caden sat in the hospital, clutching his phone, frustration etched on his face. He rubbed his temples, trying to think. When Alice didn't answer, he called Gerry. Due to his active social life, Gerry was still awake.
"What's wrong, Caden?" Gerry asked.
"Has Alice tried to contact you?" Caden asked.
"Alice? Isn't she in Averibon?" Gerry replied. "Why would she call you?"
Caden narrowed his eyes. "What is he doing in Averibon?"
Gerry realized his mistake and tried to redirect the conversation. "Why are you looking for Alice?"
Caden wanted to press further but realized the timing was wrong. Alice wasn't answering his calls; she seemed to have vanished. He spoke firmly, "We had an argument. I need you to contact her and make sure she's okay."
Gerry was surprised. "You two had an argument? How is that possible when you're in different cities?"
Caden lacked the patience for a full explanation. "Let me know as soon as you hear anything."
An hour later, Gerry called back. "Alice is back. She just landed."
Caden felt the tension lift. Shortly afterward, Yolanda was released from the operating room. She had undergone a stomach pump and looked weak and pale. Caden took her to his room. She then spoke to the doctors who had administered the medication, but none could explain why she had received the wrong drugs. The attending physician seemed grave.
