Chapter 398
Natasha hadnโt returned all night, leaving Alfred frantic with worry. In desperation, he had no choice but to seek Athenaโs help.
โForgive my late-night intrusion upon Prince Xander and you,โ Alfred said, bowing deeply with evident shame as he hastened to apologize.
Athena waved off his concern gracefully. โMr. Beren, thereโs no need to stand on ceremony. What matters now is finding Natasha. Iโll dispatch my guards to search for her right away. With her combat skills, she can handle herself. She probably just got delayed by something unexpected.โ
Alfred nodded, trying to maintain a calm facade, but deep down, he was utterly flustered. โYes, yes. She will be fine,โ he kept repeating the same sentence.
Athena instructed her attendants to stay with Alfred while she organized a search for Natasha.
Soon, news arrived.
Ansel himself rushed in to report, โYour Highness, weโve found Miss Beren.โ
โWhere is she? Is she alright?โ Athena asked anxiously.
Ansel looked troubled, casting a cautious glance at Alfred as he hesitated to speak.
Alfred shot to his feet, anxiety spiking, nearly toppling the shelf behind him. He asked, his voice tight with desperation, โWhat exactly happened to Natasha?โ
In those fleeting moments, countless dreadful possibilities raced through Alfredโs mind. โDid something happen to Natasha? Is that why she hasnโt come home? Or was she abducted by bandits?โ
His late wifeโs dying wish was for him to take good care of their daughter. โIf anything happens to Natasha, I wonโt be able to go on living either,โ Alfred thought in anguish.
Seeing Alfred growing frantic, Ansel quickly shook his head, his voice careful and a bit nervous. โNo, no, Miss Beren is fine. Nothing happened to her. The reason she came home late is that she was with Prince Evander.โ
Alfred exclaimed, โWhat?โ
โNatasha swore sheโd never marry Evander,โ Alfred thought, โso how did she suddenly end up with him? And on top of that, she didnโt even come home last night.โ
Alfredโs hands, veins bulging, clenched the table corner tightly, and spots swam before his eyes. He muttered, โOh noโฆ The Beren familyโs century-old reputationโฆ And sheโs not even married yet.โ
Then, as if a sudden thought struck him, a wave of relief washed over Alfred. โThank goodness theyโre already engaged,โ Alfred thought. โEven if rumors spread, thereโs nothing to fear. Itโs justโฆโ
Alfred couldnโt make heads or tails of it. So he asked, โHow on earth did she end up with Prince Evander all of a sudden?โ
Ansel thought helplessly, โHow should I know?โ He was only repeating what his men had reported. They saw Natasha part ways with Evander at the gates of the Evander Manor. As for what happened between them, he was completely in the dark.
โMr. Beren, itโs such a relief weโve found her. Iโm sure Natasha is waiting for you at home now. I'll have my attendant escort you home,โ Athena said.
Alfred nodded eagerly, unable to sit still for even a moment longer. Seeing his impatience, Athena quickly asked Ansel to escort Alfred back to his residence at once.
By the time all the commotion had settled down, it was already the dead of night. When Athena returned to their chamber, Xander was still asleep. She slipped quietly back into bed, and no sooner had she lain down than a strong arm drew her close. In the darkness, Xanderโs voice was rough with sleep. โWhere did you go?โ
When Trina came to report to Athena, she made sure not to disturb Xander. Now, nestled in Xanderโs embrace, Athena shifted to find a comfortable position, snuggling deeper into his arms.
โItโs nothing,โ she murmured. โGo back to sleep.โ
Xander still wanted to ask more, but holding Athena in his arms filled him with inexplicable happiness. He felt like he was floating on clouds, pleasantly lightheaded. At Athenaโs โgo back to sleep,โ he drifted effortlessly into a deep slumber.
The next morning, as soon as Athena woke up, news arrived.
Evander and Natashaโs wedding was set for the end of the month.
Athena gasped in surprise, โThe end of this month? Thatโs just around the corner! Why the rush?โ
โThey say the two of them stayed out all night, and rumors started flying around. Before you knew it, the King heard about it. And just like that, the wedding was set,โ Trina replied.
Athena thought for a moment, then nodded. โHonestly, Evander is quite decent. Heโs steady and composed, without the vices of those spoiled playboys. With one lively and the other calm, they complement each other well.โ
โBut your dear friend is at home right now, pacing around like a cat on hot bricks,โ Xander said as he walked in from outside, casually setting a box of cake on the table.
The other day, Athena mentioned she was craving the raspberry pudding cake from Joy Bakery. So Xander made a point of rising at dawn to buy it for her.
Athena looked at him with a hint of amusement. โSo, babe, you went for the cake and picked up some juicy gossip along the way?โ
Xander opened the cake box, and the sweet aroma immediately wafted to Athenaโs nose. Her mouth watered as she stared at the cake, completely mesmerized. As if sensing her anticipation, Xander picked up a piece and held it to her lips. Athena opened her mouth and took a bite. The perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors spread across her tongue. She nodded appreciatively, murmuring, โYummy!โ
โSince you like it, have another bite,โ Xander said, picking up the cake and tenderly holding it to Athenaโs lips.
Athena, however, noticed that Xander was frowning slightly, as if suppressing some discomfort.
With concern, she asked, โDarling, are you feeling unwell?โ
Xander shook his head, but seeing Athenaโs worried expression, he relented, โItโs nothing, just a bit of an upset stomach from the seasonal change.โ
โSince youโre not feeling well, you should have told me,โ Athena said gently. โIโll get some herbal medicine for you. Thereโs no need to tough it out.โ
She reached for a handkerchief to gently wipe Xanderโs forehead, but he caught her hand and smiled. โWith such a wonderful wife, what more can I possibly ask for?โ
Day in and day out, Athena and Xander were as inseparable as ever. Trina and the others had long grown used to it.
Seeing this, Trina grinned and reminded Athena, โNow that Prince Evanderโs wedding is set, and since you and Miss Beren are such close friends, itโs only right for you to prepare a wedding gift for her. Have you decided what to give her yet?โ
Hearing this, Athena paused to think seriously. โThis all happened so suddenly that I havenโt made up my mind yet. But since sheโs going to be my husbandโs future niece-in-law, as her elder, I should, of course, make sure my gift is generous.โ
As she spoke, she shot Xander a meaningful look.
Xander caught on right away. โFeel free to pick anything you like from the treasury. I wouldnโt mind. Arenโt they all yours anyway?โ
Athena smiled. โThank you for your love, darling.โ
Xander smiled softly, loving nothing more than seeing Athena so happy.
As soon as Athena got up and headed for the storeroom, Xanderโs brow furrowed deeply as he pressed a hand to his stomach, a pained expression on his face.
Athena went to the treasury, carefully selected several valuable items, had them packed into ornate chests, and then ordered her attendants to deliver them to the Ministerโs manor.
When Athena arrived, she found Natasha anxiously pacing back and forth in her room. Spotting Athena, Natasha rushed over. โAthena! Thank goodness youโre here! Quick, help me think of a solution.โ
Athena looked at her, puzzled. โWhat solution?โ
โI donโt want to get married! Maybe I should just run away,โ Natasha blurted out. As she spoke, she began frantically gathering her belongings, preparing to run away.
Athena quickly grabbed her arm and whispered urgently, โAre you insane? Defying the kingโs order means death.โ
โBut I donโt want to get married,โ Natasha choked out.
Athena gently dabbed away her tears with a handkerchief. โDonโt you like Prince Evander? Honestly, heโs quite a decent man.โ
โNo, thatโs not what I meant,โ Natasha blurted out. โIโm scared of something else.โ
