Chapter 717
Aiken's tone was gentle and respectful toward Skylar, a stark contrast that darkened Vera's expression.
"Maybe another time," Skylar replied. "I have plans with friends."
Aiken nodded, a smile playing on his lips. "Alright, next time." He turned to Vera. "Do you know Ms. Sullivan?"
Vera's smile held a hint of sarcasm. "We just met. The car she's driving is one I gave to Joe. I was curious and came to talk to her. You seem to know her quite well, don't you?"
Vera, oblivious to her own contemptuous tone, assumed Skylar used her beauty to manipulate men. She imagined many men in Skylar's life beyond Joe.
But Aiken was different from Joe. Surrounded by women, his relationships remained largely unknown; countless female celebrities and models were rumored to be among them.
Unaware of Vera's thoughts, Skylar and Aiken might have found her assumptions amusing.
"I see," Aiken said. "Let my driver take you home. It's rush hour; driving would be exhausting. You should rest and care for your injuries." He addressed Vera first, then expressed concern for Skylar.
His care felt genuine. He was exceptionally thoughtful, a rarity for him. Aiken rarely showed such concern for women; typically, it was the other way around. His attitude toward Skylar was markedly different.
"I'm recovering well, and it's close to home," Skylar replied, declining his offer. "I can manage. Thank you. Please let Simona know. I'll invite you both to dinner sometime." Her injury was minor.
Vera watched in surprise as Skylar drove away. Turning to Aiken, who still watched Skylar, she asked, "Do you know she's being kept by Joe now?"
Aiken's frown deepened. His voice was detached. "She doesn't need anyone to keep her."
Vera paused, a pang of realization hitting her. Had she misjudged? "Do you like her?" she asked tentatively.
Aiken glanced at his watch. "I have things to do," he replied coldly. "We'll talk another time."
Vera's unease stemmed from Aiken's genuine concern for Skylar. While he could be pleasant, his warmth often felt insincere, obscuring his true feelings.
Since boarding her flight home, Vera had hoped her return would make Joe notice her. Now, however, she could only think of Skylar.
