Chapter 476
โArenโt we just cohabitants? Or is there love between us? I thought you didnโt love me,โ Skylar asked.
Couldnโt he let go?
Joe clenched his jaw coldly. โWhat youโre saying is that you donโt love me, right?โ he asked.
Skylar froze. After processing his words, she looked down. They had been living together for months. Everything Joe had done for her had made her develop feelings for him. However, she knew she couldnโt let those feelings show; it would break their promise. If he saw through her, their marriage would be awkward from that day forward.
โIndeed, I donโt love you,โ Skylar said.
Joe frowned and threw Skylarโs hand away. โRemember what you said today,โ he threatened. โYouโd better not fall in love with me. If notโฆโ
โIf not what?โ Skylar asked, looking up.
Would they obey their contract and get a divorce? In an instant, Joeโs astonishment at Skylarโs cruelty and ruthlessness was evident.
โNothing much. Just remember what you said today,โ Joe said coldly.
The sudden change in his personality plunged Skylar into a cold abyss. There was no trace of the gentleness heโd shown when trying to convince her to have sex last night. Indeed, men behaved very differently in and out of bed. It didnโt matter how gentle he was in bed or how deeply he gazed at her; it was all a sham. Skylar was relieved she hadnโt revealed her feelings; otherwise, she would have been utterly embarrassed.
Paul secretly called Skylar that afternoon. โMs. Sullivan, Mr. Martin has been behaving like a devil incarnate all afternoon. Everyone is terrified. Heโs ordered a dozen people to work overtime since this morning, and Iโll need to work overtime tonight. What happened at home? He was fine yesterday.โ
โEverythingโs been great at home. Nothingโs going on. Donโt overthink it,โ Skylar said diffidently. Had Joe let his emotions affect his work?
On her way to work, she reflected on her conversation with Joe. She still couldnโt figure out why he was unhappy. She hadnโt forgotten their promise. Shouldnโt he be ecstatic? Why had it increased his anger? Had he discovered her feelings and detected her lies?
โReally?โ Paul asked, unconvinced. However, if Skylar said nothing was wrong, it must be true. Perhaps he couldn't adjust because he was used to an easygoing Joe. On second thought, Joe had behaved this way for weeks.
โRight, Ms. Sullivan. I have something else to ask you,โ Paul said, remembering something.
Skylar smiled. โAlright, fire away.โ
Joe glanced at Paul, who was creeping back into the office after making a call. โWho were you calling?โ he asked.
โMs. Sullivan. I had something to ask her,โ Paul replied immediately.
Joe was highly observant. Paul had only been gone a few minutes, and Joe already knew what heโd done. Joe glared at Paul. โWhat did you want to ask her?โ
โI want to buy my mother a traditional dress, but I donโt know which kind to choose. Iโm afraid of accidentally buying a horrible one, like Mr. Doherty Seniorโs.โ
Upon hearing Paul mention a traditional dress, Joe recalled Skylar stumbling into his arms while wearing one at Frankโs house. He brightened slightly and ordered, โWhen youโre picking out the dress, get one in Skylarโs size.โ
Paulโs eyes widened. โWould you like to see Ms. Sullivan in a traditional dress?โ he asked.
Was Joe into this sort of thing?
