Chapter 1111
Lizzie had always considered Herman intelligent, even from a young age. He seemed capable of handling almost anything. After joining the company, his capabilities only increased. She couldn't understand how the same person could become so distant in just over a year.
"I understand," Skylar said. "Let's just take a quick look and not disturb him."
Lizzie knocked on the door. There was no response. She knocked three more times, but still, nothing. Lizzie's expression betrayed no surprise at the lack of response. She pushed the door open and said, "Herman, I'm coming in."
The dim light inside made it difficult to see. The curtains were drawn tight, blocking out the sunlight, and the lights were off. The weather was still warm, and most people had their air conditioning running during the day. However, Herman's room was stiflingly hot.
Skylar hesitated at the threshold.
Lizzie entered first. "Herman, I have a friend here to see you. She's an antique restorer and wants to check on you. Let me open the curtains."
Lizzie knew Herman's room well and went straight to the window. But as she reached for the curtains, he grabbed her arm. "Ouch! You're hurting me, Herman!" Lizzie yelped.
He remained silent. She sighed. "Okay, I won't open the curtains. How about we at least turn on a light?"
This time, he didn't stop her. Lizzie flipped the switch. As the room brightened, Skylar took in the scene and saw Herman standing at the window, his back to them. He was hunched, wearing a long-sleeved outfit despite the heat, looking so thin his spine was visible. Even without seeing his face, his posture conveyed a profound hopelessness, a sense of wanting to escape life itself.
Lizzie's eyes welled up. Herman hadn't always been like this. Growing up, she had admired him, often boasting to others about her wonderful brother. Now, her only hope rested with Skylar.
Chapter 1111
Skylar discreetly observed Herman's room and softly said, "Hello, Mr. Garza."
As expected, her greeting was met with silence. Lizzie looked at Skylar apologetically.
Skylar shook her head, unfazed. Before leaving, she subtly placed a talisman near the door.
After exiting Herman's room, Lizzie asked, "What did you just put down?"
"A talisman to calm the mind and spirit," Skylar replied. "It should help your brother. I've learned a bit about him, so let's check your family's antiques."
"My parents knew you were coming, so they moved all the antiques to the fifth floor," Lizzie said, leading Skylar to the elevator.
They arrived on the fifth floor, which housed not only antiques but also an impressive collection of rare and expensive jewelry. There seemed to be fewer antiques than jewels.
"My mother collects jewels, but rarely wears them. She just likes to admire them," Lizzie explained. "The paintings and calligraphy are my father's favorites. He loves collecting antiques."
