Chapter 233

The next day, explosive news broke: Mr. Everett had accompanied his girlfriend, Miss Roxanne, for a prenatal checkup, announcing an impending arrival. Their six-year relationship was reportedly stable, and Miss Roxanne was expecting twins. Mr. Everett had reportedly been by her side throughout her pregnancy.

These headlines exploded online. However, Roxanne had secretly orchestrated the photo opportunity, strategically portraying a stable and loving relationship with Bruce. News of Bruce dancing with Jennie was quickly suppressed. Roxanne successfully shifted public perception, solidifying her relationship with Bruce. This all unfolded at Reagan No. 8 Residence.

Bruce had been in the spotlight for two days, his news widely reported on television. Joanna saw the reports. Watching Bruce accompany Roxanne for a prenatal checkup was markedly different from watching the news about Jennie. Joanna felt a deep, unbearable pain, not necessarily jealousy, but something akin to a heart exploding.

"Madam, it's time for rest!"

Joanna paused, sat up, and said, "I'm going to the courtyard for some air."

"Madam, the sun is very bright outside!"

Joanna replied blankly, "Perfect. I can bask in the sun."

"Alright then!" Ms. Chain hesitated but helped Joanna out of bed.

Joanna, in loose pajamas and slippers, left the second-floor bedroom. As she reached the top of the stairs, dizziness overcame her, causing double vision. "Madam, what's wrong?" Ms. Chain rushed to her side, supporting her.

"I'm fine. I might have hypoglycemia. I'm a little dizzy."

"Be careful. Why not go back to the room and lie down?"

"No, get me some chocolate!"

"Oh, okay!" Ms. Chain quickly asked Nancy to fetch some.

Joanna stood on the second floor, holding the railing. She'd been dizzy for days, her spirits further dampened by discontinuing her antidepressants.

Before the chocolate arrived, her vision blacked out, and she fell from the second floor. "Madam! Madam" Ms. Chain screamed, trying to catch her, but Joanna tumbled down the stairs.

"Oh my god! Help!"

Ms. Chain rushed downstairs. The downstairs servants, hearing the commotion, ran to help. Joanna lay unconscious on the first floor, her forehead and cheeks injured. The frightened servants rushed to her side.

"Oh no, Madam is bleeding! Call the driver! Send her to the hospital! Call Mr. Everett! Inform Mr. Everett!"

"Yes, yes!" The servants frantically prepared to transport Joanna to the hospital, while another servant immediately called Bruce.

Bruce, in a meeting, saw the call from Reagan No. 8 Residence. He assumed it was Joanna demanding his presence and hung up.

Unable to reach Bruce, the servant called Andy.

"Hi!"

"Hello, Andy. Where's Mr. Everett?"

"He's in a meeting."

"Get him to answer the phone. Miss Haynes fell down the stairs and has been sent to the hospital!"

Andy panicked. Knowing Joanna's importance to Bruce, he hurried into the conference room.

Bruce, addressing high-level executives, was interrupted. "Mr. Everett, a call for you!"

Angrily, Bruce retorted, "Didn't I say no outside calls during meetings?"

Nervously, Andy whispered, "Sir, Nancy called. Miss Haynes fell down the stairs…"

Bruce's eyes widened. He snatched the phone. "Hello! Repeat that!"

Nancy's anxious voice confirmed the news. "Mr. Everett, Madam fell down the stairs and is at the hospital!"

"What?" Bruce stood abruptly. "Which hospital?"

"Greyport Hospital!"

His heart pounded. He left the meeting.

"Why's Mr. Everett in such a hurry?"

"I don't know. I heard someone's in the hospital?"

"Who? Why's he so nervous?"

"Let's not worry about it. Should we continue this meeting or go?"

"Uh, let's go! He's probably not coming back anytime soon!"

The executives exchanged glances and whispered amongst themselves.

Bruce raced to the hospital.

"Mr. Everett, Madam's still in emergency…"

"What did the doctor say?" Bruce demanded.

"She's still in there. She hasn't come out yet!"

Bruce's heart sank. "Aren't you all taking care of her? How did she fall?"

"Madam wanted fresh air. Going downstairs, she felt dizzy and asked for chocolate. I asked Nancy to get it, and then she fell."

Bruce's face paled. Joanna, already weak, was now in grave danger. His concern shifted from the baby's survival to Joanna's.

"Joanna, please be safe!" he prayed. He regretted his anger and their week apart.

Half an hour later, the operating room door opened. The doctor emerged with a serious expression. Bruce rushed to him.

"Doctor, how's Joanna?"

The doctor frowned. "Mr. Everett, Ms. Haynes experienced a miscarriage-like symptom. The baby is unstable."

"What should we do?"

"We're protecting the baby. She needs a month of bed rest and three doses of pregnancy-stabilizing medication daily."

"How about Joanna? Is she in danger?"

"Her external injuries are minor. She'll recover with rest. However, her anemia is severe and hasn't improved."

Bruce knew Joanna's poor diet contributed to the anemia.

"You must do your best!"

"Mr. Everett, you may see the patient."

"Okay…"

Joanna lay in bed, pale and wearing an oxygen mask. Bruce sat beside her, his heart aching.

"Joanna, wake up! You're breaking my heart…" He held her hand, his throat choked with unshed tears. Words felt inadequate.

Bruce stayed for over three hours. Joanna stirred, her eyelashes fluttering open. Double vision initially blurred her sight, but she eventually recognized the man beside her.
