Chapter 76
Millie was smiling, but her gaze was filled with an arrogance stemming from wealth. Evelyn pursed her lips. She looked rather cold, not even responding. Millie had backstabbed Evelyn’s mother and driven her to the brink of despair. Evelyn could not bring herself to smile at a woman like that.
Mason was a little displeased. “You should at least respond when someone older than you is talking to you.” Jason, on the other hand, said nothing. He felt Evelyn was very clear about whether she liked or disliked a person. If she appeared unhappy or indifferent in front of someone, then they were certainly those who treated her badly, or those she was disgusted by. Lucas’s friends, for example, were such people.
“It’s fine; things have always been like this, so it’s no big deal,” Millie said, surprisingly forgiving. It was as if there was no past resentment between them at all. “We’re having a party today to celebrate our move to a new place. Do you want to join us?”
Evelyn glanced at Lucas, who looked indifferent. She figured he had already gotten his future mother-in-law settled into the new place. She felt it was quite insulting. After everything Millie had done to Naomi, she was acting as if nothing had happened. People who didn’t know better would truly think she was a kind woman.
It was a high-profile party. Evelyn glanced at the hall and saw that it was filled with people from the business field. Lucas had truly given Millie a great honor by holding such an event. Evelyn had been with him for so many years, yet he had never given her uncle and grandmother this level of respect and treatment. She was reminded of the other gift in Lucas’s car. It must have been a gift he had prepared for Tiffany and Millie with all his heart and soul.
“Tic’s schedule is very packed. She has no time to act friendly with her husband’s lover, so we’re not going to take up any more of your time,” said Justine after she walked past Evelyn’s arm. She didn’t even know how hard she should roll her eyes to make it insulting enough.
Millie frowned, thinking Justine’s words were in poor taste. She wondered what kind of friend Evelyn surrounded herself with. Lucas also glanced at Justine, but his expression was unreadable. Evelyn noticed his darkened gaze and was a little worried for Justine, so she quickly pulled her away.
Both Mason and Jason were dumbfounded. Just as they were about to say something, Tiffany waved her hand, gracefully letting the matter slide. She was quite calm. She felt that Justine was just spewing empty insults because that was the only way for her to defend her self-esteem.
Tiffany did not welcome Evelyn, so she said to Millie, “Mom, you should head in first.” Then, Millie looked at Lucas. “Lucas, introduce those guests to me later. I want to get to know them to make sure they are not neglected.” Lucas nodded and replied, “Right.”
Mason smiled and went after Millie. “Let me do it. It’s their honor to be able to get to know you.” Millie was all smiles upon hearing that, and she felt much better. Evelyn did not wish to talk to them, so she quickly pulled Justine away. As they left, Lucas took a sidelong glance at Evelyn’s back before he turned around indifferently.
Tiffany sheered silently after she saw his reaction, thinking Evelyn was just fleeing in a panic. She knew she would be embarrassed if she were to stay. After all, the person who felt sheepish was always the one who was defeated.
After they left the building, Justine put her hands on her waist and acted like she was about to throw up. “Look at how smug she was! If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought Lucas was her son-in-law. Both the mother and daughter looked at you as if you, Lucas’s wife, were the home-wrecker instead. Lucas truly has given them a great deal of confidence!”
She couldn’t believe that Evelyn had to be the one to make way for them instead. Evelyn patted Justine’s back to calm her down. “It’s fine. We’re already getting a divorce anyway.” But Justine sneered and said, “She’s a homewrecker as long as the divorce is not finalized! She’s a typical bitch who would say that all is fair in love and war!”
Evelyn covered Justine’s mouth. There was no telling if anybody was eavesdropping. If Lucas and the others were to find out what Justine just said, she might get into trouble. Justine was tremendously upset; as they left, she stepped on the gas while cursing at the cars that were cutting the line. Evelyn did not hold her back. She just let Justine vent her anger as she pleased.
Then, Evelyn received a call from Sebastian. “Evie, come with me to Holmer City for a business trip this Wednesday. I think you’ll like it,” Sebastian said mysteriously.
Chapter 77
Evelyn raised her eyebrow a little and asked, “A business trip?” “It’s the space technology conference held once every two years in Holmes City. The people attending the event are big shots from our country and abroad. Big investors will be there as well. What do you think? You’re interested, aren’t you?” Sebastian smirked.
