Chapter 30

A wave of emotion washed over Evelyn as she put down Lucas's napkin. He rose to his feet, saying, “I have some business to attend to. You can continue eating without me.” He didn't spare Evelyn another glance before heading upstairs.

Evelyn had just caught Lucas's complicated expression, and she was unable to ascertain its meaning. In any case, she felt slightly anxious. When would Lucas bring up the matter with Maria?

Next to her, Sophia curled her lips into a smile. “Since Lucas has lost his appetite, I won't eat either.” She then went off to play games.

Evelyn remained composed and continued eating. She didn’t care what others thought of her. Why waste time grappling with her own feelings?

Once dinner was finished, Maria sighed helplessly. “Evie, you know Lucas’s temper. I know you’ve been wronged, so don’t worry. I’m on your side. I’ll make sure…”

Seeing the worried expression on Maria’s face, Evelyn felt quite uncomfortable. Maria had always treated her well, and Evelyn hoped they had a successful marriage. She was always helpful when Evelyn tried to ignite Lucas's love for her. However, there was no more hope for them. His heart now belonged to another woman.

Evelyn wasn’t willing to continue pursuing someone who didn’t reciprocate her feelings. She was a ticking time bomb, and she didn't wish to be a burden to anyone.

“Grandma, I actually came here today because I had something to say to you,” Evelyn took a deep breath. “I’ll tell you when Lucas comes down…”

She tied up her hair, unable to continue staring into Maria’s concerned eyes. When she stood outside the door to the room she and Lucas used to sleep in, Evelyn knocked politely. She wanted to discuss with Lucas the matter of revealing the divorce. However, there was no reply.

Evelyn gave another knock, but it was still silent. She hesitated and lightly pushed the door open. “Lucas!”

She took two steps in and was caught off guard by the sight of Lucas next to the window, his back turned toward her. A smiling Tiffany was displayed on the screen of the phone in his hand, and they were both chatting like a pair of deeply infatuated lovers.

A gentle smile had appeared on Lucas’s handsome face while chatting with Tiffany on his phone. The second he saw Evelyn, it disappeared. He didn’t hide the fact that he was video-calling Tiffany.

Evelyn’s feet were rooted to the ground. Facing his cold stare, she suddenly felt her heart squeeze.

“Don’t you have any manners? Can’t you knock?” There wasn’t a trace of emotion in Lucas’s voice.

Even though they were about to divorce, they had been married for three years. Evelyn wasn’t able to keep her cool completely. She stared at him without shying away and calmly asked, “Do you think I’m peeping on you again?”

He seemed to think so back on Reis Mountain. This time, did he also think she was repeating the same tactic?

“Why are you in Lucas’s room? Come here.” The door suddenly swung open, and Sophia reached out to grab Evelyn’s wrist. “Why are you…”

Without waiting for an explanation, Sophia pulled Evelyn to the opposite guest room. She used both arms to block the door. “I have a few more homework questions to ask Lucas. He’ll be very busy tonight, so you should go to sleep.”

Sophia ran off after closing the door. Evelyn stood in the dark room for a long while, before slowly…

Sophia, still young, had her thoughts written all over her face. She definitely wasn’t adding Lucas to help her with her homework. Sophia just didn’t want Evelyn near Lucas and worried that she’d share a bedroom with him.

Evelyn waited silently. They would need to tell Maria about the divorce eventually, and she had to know what arrangements Lucas had in mind.

At 10:00 pm, Evelyn went downstairs to grab some water for her medicine. When she reached the corner of the stairs, she heard Sophia’s impertinent voice coming from the kitchen island. “Tiffany, don’t worry, I won’t let Evelyn get close to Lucas! I’ll protect your relationship!”

Evelyn paused in her steps; she could barely bear Tiffany’s shrill voice through the receiver. She then said, “Your brother won’t let her do that. I’ve never worried about something like that happening.”

Evelyn lowered her gaze; she remained silent and did not interrupt their exchange. Sophia had also come down to get a drink.

Evelyn poured herself a glass of water, then immediately went to Lucas’s room. This time, she leaned heavily on his door.
