The Pack’s Alpha Chapter 17: Stand Off

Yorick

Did Thad scent our mate overnight? Hell fucking yeah, he did. He made sure everyone here knows that Cyra and Rina are ours.

As we walk out to the sparring field, Megan the Menace walks over. Damn, that’s a good name. I’ll have to let Nickname know so we can all start calling her that.

“Hey, Yorick…” she begins, stopping and crinkling her nose at Cyra. “Oh my goddess, you reek.”

“If by reek, you mean I smell like my man, the one you continue to flirt with, I’m okay with that,” Cyra retorts.

“Try showering every once in a while,” she growls, walking away.

“Try finding a man who isn’t already taken,” Cyra shouts back to her, causing several of the students to look over at us. I don’t say a word. If my mate wants to claim me in front of the entire class, be my guest.

When Warrior Callie calls the first match, I growl.

“Yorick Hill versus Megan Alston,” he says.

“Great. Megan the Menace, that’s her new name, Nickname,” I tell Zach.

“At least that one fits,” he grumbles.

“Yours fits too, Nickname,” Piper says to him as I walk forward. I see the Menace smirk at someone behind me, and I don’t have to be a genius to know it’s Cyra.

I hear my mate’s soft, angry growl, and then I hear Piper murmuring to her. Good. My mate has nothing to worry about with the Menace.

“I’ve been waiting to get my hands on you, gorgeous,” she purrs when we face off. I see Alpha Nevaeh raise an eyebrow, but she doesn’t say anything.

I ignore the taunt and get into a fighting position. Thankfully, I have three sisters who are strong warriors. She-wolves fight differently than male wolves, but I’ve been sparring with my sisters my entire life. I also paid attention to the Menace’s fighting strategy with Piper yesterday, so I feel prepared to take her on today.

As soon as Alpha Nevaeh calls the fight, I realize that the Menace is a stronger fighter than I gave her credit for. Her entire fighting strategy is different, as it should be, because she’s fighting a male, a very different kind of fighter than a she-wolf.

But she saw me fight against another male wolf yesterday, and I also change my fighting strategy to account for her different fighting style.

She’s powerful, I’ll give her that, and she’s fast. For the first minute, we test each other, and then she finally moves in. She drops to a crouch, swinging her leg faster than I can jump over it. I slam down to the ground on my back, the air temporarily leaving my lungs as she leaps on top of me, her body straddling mine. Her claws come out, and she lunges like she’s going to impale my shoulders to the ground. I cross my arms to block her, pushing her arms outside of my shoulders and giving myself precious moments to catch my breath. The motion brings her face much too close to mine.

The Menace, probably thinking she’s won, looks up, once again taunting my mate with what looks like a very intimate position. I’m sure Rina is seeing red with jealousy, and Thad isn’t having any of it. He tosses the Menace off us, and she lands on her back. Before she can move, I slam my fist into her solar plexus, forcing the air from her lungs.

“Winner!” Alpha Nevaeh calls. I look at the Menace, who is still grappling for air.

“That’s for my girl who would punch you if she could,” I growl, hopping up and going straight to Cyra, pulling her into my arms and kissing her fiercely before turning to watch the Menace finally get to her feet and hobble away.

“I should say you didn’t have to do that, but… I’m glad you did,” Cyra says.

I pull her against me and kiss the side of her head. “Anything for you, my love,” I murmur in her ear.

Landon is next. He goes up against one of the Menace’s cronies. He takes him down fast. I look at Zach, and he smiles at me. I know exactly what he’s thinking. We both want our chance to go against him. He’s damn good. Of course, he’d have to be to be here.

Piper wins her match against another fighter. Chase wins his match today, going against the asshole I fought yesterday. He’s still a poor loser, and Chase comes back to our side shaking his head. Katelynn ties in her battle against the female in the Menace’s group, and then it’s Cyra’s turn.

“You’ve got this, baby,” I tell her, watching the last of the Menace’s cronies walk up to compete against my girl. I noticed the Menace whisper in his ear before he comes out, but I didn’t think much of it. It’s not like we’re not giving each other last-minute fighting tips on our side.

It’s obvious as soon as the fight begins that Cyra is the stronger fighter. He’s good, but he’s no Alpha, and beyond that, he’s no Landon. It makes me wonder how he got into the Academy. My sisters could defeat him, and they aren’t eighteen yet.

It’s only about two minutes in when Cyra kicks him in the head and sends him to the ground.

“Winner!” Alpha Nevaeh says, calling the fight.

Cyra turns to look at me, a proud smile on her face, when I see the guy kick his foot out, aimed right at the side of Cyra’s knee.

I’ve barely comprehended what I’ve seen before Thad pulls the shift and races to intercept the guy. However, my mate’s cry of pain slices through me, and she collapses just as Thad grabs the guy by his throat, pinning him to the ground.

Thad is snarling angrily, his teeth puncturing the guy’s throat. He thrashes against me until my teeth sink far enough into his throat that he’s on the verge of death.

“Alpha Yorick, release him,” Alpha Leo says, coming up behind me.

Thad turns, dragging the guy by his throat, so he can face Alpha Leo. Thad snarls angrily, seeing Piper, Zach, and Landon by Cyra, whose knee is at an unnatural angle.

“Release him,” Alpha Leo growls again.

Thad faces off against the Alpha. They should have been paying closer attention. This shouldn’t have happened, and if Cyra is too injured to stay at the Academy…

Before I can stop him, Thad rips the guy’s throat out. I quickly pull the shift and stand to face the Alpha.

“Next time, do your fucking job,” I snarl.

“Yorick, you are out of line,” he growls.

“I’m out of line? It looks to me like you have no control over this Academy, Alpha. Get your people in line so shit like this doesn’t happen,” I snarl before going over to Cyra and carefully lifting her in my arms.

I turn to the Menace. “Come for her again. I fucking dare you,” I snarl, before turning and moving as fast as I can to the hospital in the hopes that they can help my mate heal so she doesn’t have to leave the Academy.
