Chapter 338: Department of Justice
Back in Yeringham, Josephine stayed up all night worrying about Jared. Meanwhile, the hotel owner was terrified by the number of Tommy's men surrounding his hotel. Tommy had rushed his men from Horington to Yeringham to protect Josephine.
As dawn painted the horizon a faint yellow, Jared arrived in his badly damaged car. Josephine was naturally anxious at its condition. As soon as he got out, she rushed into his arms, asking anxiously, "Are you all right, Jared? Are you hurt?"
"I'm fine! How could the puny Whitaker family ever hurt me?" Jared smiled faintly.
Yasmin then emerged from the car. Her heart ached slightly at the sight of Jared and Josephine embracing.
"Yasmin, a-are you all right?" Zeke rushed to her, hugging her in relief.
Yasmin coldly pushed him away. "I'm fine!"
Zeke was baffled. Why is she so cold toward me? he wondered.
Josephine released Jared and hugged Yasmin, exclaiming, "Thank you, Yasmin! Thank you so much for saving me!"
"Silly! Of course I had to protect you! Actually, I should be thanking you," Yasmin replied, smiling slightly before glancing instinctively at Jared.
Josephine looked at Yasmin with bewilderment. What does she mean? Why should she be thanking me?
Noticing Josephine's expression, Yasmin explained, "I should thank you for having such an amazing boyfriend! Otherwise, I wouldn't have been saved!"
Though said jokingly, she meant it sincerely. Jared's actions had shown her the kind of boyfriend she wanted.
"Stop tooting his horn, Yasmin! He's going to get a big head!" Josephine laughed.
Everyone felt relieved by Jared and Yasmin's safe return. Josephine's words brightened everyone's mood.
After some light conversation, Jared went to bed, exhausted from the hectic few days. The others, equally weary, slept soundly.
While they slept, Summerbank descended into chaos.
Following the Whitaker family's demise, the city held its breath, adopting a wait-and-see attitude. The family's extensive business holdings left other families poised to pounce. Although previously seemingly aligned with Kane, everyone now eyed a share of the Whitaker assets.
At the Whitaker mansion, hundreds of officials established a perimeter, barricading the property to prevent unauthorized entry. The family's future remained uncertain.
A frowning middle-aged man in casual wear, covering his nose with a handkerchief, stood amidst the scene. The stench of blood was overwhelming. This was Anthony Long, head of the Department of JusticeโSummerbank's primary law enforcement agency. The case's magnitude demanded his personal presence.
A uniformed girl with a ponytail approached Anthony and reported, "General, we found forty-eight corpses. Unfortunately, the severity of their burns makes identification impossible. Further autopsies are needed."
