Chapter 294: Not on the Same Level
Just as Walter was paralyzed by the tension, the door burst open, and a man in a suit entered. It was Glen. Having learned of Kane's arrival in Horington, he'd immediately come to the hotel.
He glanced at the bodyguards on the floor. "This is Horington, Kane, not Summerbank," he said. "You don't hurt people on my turf. That's tantamount to spitting in my face."
Kane was surprised by Glen's appearance. He hadn't expected the Sullivan family to influence the mayor. The Sullivans were Horington's wealthiest family, but their influence wasn't usually this strong.
However, Glen's presence wasn't due to the Sullivans; it was because of Jared.
"I hope you won't interfere, Mr. Lowe," Kane said. "Go back to being mayor and stay out of my way." Though surprised, he wasn't afraid. Glen was just a small-city mayor. He regularly dined with higher-ranking officials in Summerbank and considered Glen no threat.
"This is my city," Glen retorted, "and I'm responsible for the safety of its citizens. I could have you arrested. If you want to avoid a bigger mess, leave with your men. I'll pretend this never happened." Glen was furious at Kane's arrogance.
"What a joke!" Kane laughed. "I'll wait for your arrest. And if you don't send me off nicely, I'll change my name to yours!"
He showed Glen no respect. Glen had been obstructing the construction of a company building, further fueling Kane's disdain.
"You!" Glen gritted his teeth, his face reddening with anger.
"Be a good mayor and ignore this," Kane sneered. "Interfere again, and you'll be unemployed." His contempt was a testament to the Whitaker family's power.
The room fell silent.
Thump, thump, thump!
Footsteps sounded, and Tommy burst in with a dozen men. Seeing William surrounded by Whitaker family experts, his face darkened. He immediately ordered his men to protect William, Jared's father-in-law.
Instead of surprise, Kane laughed. "Things are getting interesting! Even the underground king! Horington's mightiest lineup, eh?"
"You're outmatched on our turf, Kane!" Tommy glared, unafraid. "Dare to disrupt Horington, and you won't leave alive!"
Since taking an enhancement pill, his strength and courage had multiplied. Witnessing Jared's power had further emboldened him. He would never have dared to confront a Whitaker family head before; they weren't on the same level.
