Chapter 14: Superb Acting Skills

โ€œOh my God, three hundred thousand dollars? Iโ€™d have to work for ten years to afford a watch like Lincolnโ€™s!โ€

โ€œComparisons are odious. We canโ€™t even compare!โ€

โ€œLincoln has both looks and wealth! Heโ€™s truly perfect!โ€

โ€œWhen are you going to break up with him, Mich? I want to book him in advance! Iโ€™d even settle for being his girlfriend for a day!โ€

They showered Lincoln and Michelle with praise and teasing, sending the couple into fits of laughter. Ah, the feeling of being envied was truly great!

โ€œI remember you used to date Hilda, Lincoln,โ€ a long-haired girl in a dress said abruptly. โ€œWhy did you two break up?โ€

The girl was Yvonne White, a former dorm mate of Hildaโ€™s, and she knew something of their history. Her question silenced the room, creating an awkward atmosphere. After all, Michelle and Hilda had been roommates, making Michelle's role in the breakup rather unsavory.

Lincoln adopted a sorrowful expression, feigning hesitancy. โ€œItโ€™s a long story, and one Iโ€™m reluctant to discuss,โ€ he murmured. โ€œI gave Hilda my heart, but she wasnโ€™t satisfied. Besides her extravagant spending, she frequented bars and eventually became an exotic dancer. I couldnโ€™t handle it anymoreโ€ฆโ€

His moving tale elicited sympathetic glances. It seemed heโ€™d kept up with Hildaโ€™s life, even knowing about her career change.

โ€œI never thought sheโ€™d be like that! She seemed so sweet and docile,โ€ someone exclaimed. โ€œBut she became an exotic dancer?โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t judge a book by its cover. She seemed innocent, but sheโ€™sโ€ฆ promiscuous!โ€

โ€œI feel so sorry for Lincoln. He was so good to her, and she didnโ€™t appreciate him!โ€

โ€œI heard sheโ€™s attending the reunion today. I canโ€™t believe she had the nerve!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t grieve over her, Lincoln. You and Mich are a much better match!โ€

The group condemned Hilda while consoling Lincoln. Tears glistening in his eyes, he nodded slightly. โ€œIโ€™m fortunate to have met Mich. Sheโ€™s a balm to my wounded heart!โ€

Lincolnโ€™s acting was superb. In an instant, heโ€™d swayed everyone to his side, heaping blame on Hilda, who was entirely unaware of the public condemnation brewing before her arrival.

โ€œI knew Hilda for three years, and I never knew she was like this,โ€ Yvonne said, curling her lip. โ€œNo wonder sheโ€™s dating an ex-convict now.โ€

Her words stunned the group. They stared at her incredulously.

โ€œWho told you that, Yvonne? Are you sure?โ€ Michelle asked urgently.

โ€œYolanda. We talked last night. She said Hilda has an ex-convict boyfriend. I was surprised, but considering sheโ€™s an exotic dancer, I guess sheโ€™s lucky to land him!โ€

A smile spread across Michelleโ€™s face. She hatched a plan to humiliate Hilda if she brought her boyfriend. Lincoln also smirked upon learning of Hildaโ€™s new boyfriend.

Just then, Yolanda and Hilda entered, Jared trailing behind them.

โ€œHello, everyone! Long time no see!โ€ Yolanda greeted.
