Chapter 81
At Cynthia's words, Christopher snapped out of his stupor. He let go of her and said, "I'm sorry, Cynthia. I got a bit carried away."
She looked at the red marks on her arm and feigned ignorance. "What happened?"
He slumped on the couch, his head lowered, his demeanor heavy with despair. He mumbled, "Melody... she's gone."
"Melody's in the hospital, right? Haven't you sobered up from lunch yet?" she asked.
"No, she's not in the hospital. The nurse said she discharged herself yesterday morning," Christopher said.
"Really? I didn't know that," she responded, pretending to be surprised.
"Her room is clean. She left only the phone I bought for her and..." His voice trailed off.
"What else?" Cynthia pressed, deliberately guiding the conversation.
He gritted his teeth and clenched his fists. "A bunch of useless, photocopied papers. Does she think she can intimidate me with this? She's such a fool!"
She frowned at the mention of photocopies. Wasn't that supposed to be the divorce agreement?
She stood up and hurried to Melody's room, only to find a pile of papers scattered on the floor. Her heart sank. Christopher had torn up the divorce agreement! Did that mean the divorce was void?
Panicking, she crouched down to gather the papers, cursing inwardly, "I should have hidden this and waited until the 30-day cooling-off period had passed before presenting it." Now, what? With the agreement torn, the divorce couldn't proceed. Was Melody going to come back? When would she ever become the prestigious Mrs. Fuller?
"What are you doing?" His voice suddenly rang out from the doorway, startling Cynthia.
"Just saving some trash from the floor; I was going to pick it up," she said, forcing a smile.
"That's not trash. It's Melody's prank," he said coldly. "She thought she could scare me with a mere photocopy. Does she think everyone's as foolish as her?"
Cynthia heard the word "photocopy" again and picked up the torn paper to inspect it. The printed section was unremarkable, but the signature area was clearly a photocopy. Where was the original? Did Melody hide it? Didn't she want the divorce?
"What a cunning move, Melody! You've set me up!" she thought.
Cynthia clenched her teeth and tightly gripped the paper, her eyes filled with fury.
"Do you have her phone number? Call her," Christopher demanded.
She didn't want to call, and even if she did, she couldn't do it before him. But as he walked toward her, she quickly turned and took out her phone, deleting all the messages she had sent Melody.
Before she could say anything, he snatched the phone from her hand, found the contacts, and noticed that Melody's number was missing.
"Christopher, you're scrolling too fast. Let me do it," Cynthia smiled, took back her phone, added the number, and dialed.
The speakerphone was on, and after two rings, the cold mechanical voice sounded.
"Mel must have blocked me," Cynthia said innocently, her anger boiling. "Melody, you'd better not let me find you, or you'll regret it!" she murmured.
Seeing that Melody didn't pick up, Christopher asked her to send a message. Fortunately, she had deleted the message history. Cynthia explained that Melody had already deleted her as a friend on other social media platforms, so he was forced to give up. As they left the room, Cynthia asked, "Christopher, have you had dinner yet? Do you want to go out for supper?"
