Chapter 66
Christopher heard the sound and instinctively clenched his fist. It seemed Melody had answered Sheklon’s call but kept him blocked. Sheldon glanced at Christopher, sensing the intense, dark atmosphere around him. He felt like he might lose his life.
“Sorry, the number you are trying to reach is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.” The mechanical voice rang out, and Christopher froze. Sheldon thought, “Thank goodness.”
“Try calling a few more times,” Christopher said. Sheldon attempted several more calls, but the message remained the same.
Christopher thought, “Heh. So, she’s treating me the same as everyone else.” The anger he’d been brewing slowly dissipated, and his mood improved, though he wasn’t sure why.
“Alright. You can go now. She blocked you too,” he said. Sheldon paused, then lowered his head to check his phone. He realized Christopher was angry because Melody had blocked him.
“Mr. Fuller, this might not be a block notification. It could just mean the phone is turned off,” Sheldon suggested.
Christopher frowned. “She’s in the hospital. It’s impossible for her not to use her phone. I called her several times this morning, and it was the same notification every time.” Sheldon was puzzled.
Before he could offer another excuse, he heard Christopher mutter, “Her phone. That’s right. I broke her phone in half four days ago.”
Sheldon thought, “Did they have such a serious argument?”
“But I bought her a new one! Is she not using it, or did she just block me?” Christopher’s anger flared again.
“Mr. Fuller, rather than guessing, it would be quicker to go to the hospital and ask Mrs. Fuller directly,” Sheldon said.
“I’m not going,” Christopher coldly rejected. “She committed attempted murder; she should be the one apologizing and begging for forgiveness. The fact that I haven’t filed charges is generous enough, and she still expects me to reach out first?” Christopher scoffed.
Sheldon was silent for a moment before recounting their earlier conversation, saying, “As a man, I think you should take the initiative. There’s no shame in doing so. In fact, a proactive man is more attractive.”
Christopher stared at Sheldon, stunned.
“Mrs. Fuller said she didn’t do it. There might be a misunderstanding. It’s better to meet and talk it through,” Sheldon continued. “What if it was a simple mistake, like forgetting to turn off the gas stove? She didn’t do it on purpose, and she was the one hurt most. But these days, you haven’t checked on her or shown any concern.”
Christopher was utterly silent, his gaze unfocused as he pressed his lips tightly together, seemingly lost in thought. Sheldon knew Christopher had heard him and hoped he would go to the hospital to clear things up with Melody.
“Did Melody say all of this?” Christopher finally asked after a long pause.
“Yes, she told me directly. She was emotional, and I don’t think she was lying,” Sheldon replied.
“Why didn’t you tell me that day?” Christopher questioned.
“She asked me not to say anything. She said you wouldn’t believe it. You only believe what you want to believe,” Sheldon answered.
Christopher was taken aback. That sounded exactly like Melody. But if she had explained herself, how could he have not listened? He wouldn’t have been so angry even if it wasn't intentional.
“I didn’t tell you immediately because I thought you were still angry, and I didn’t want to make things worse. I planned to tell you in a few days,” Sheldon added.
Christopher pressed his lips together, then stood up. As he prepared to leave, Sheldon asked, “Are you going to the hospital to visit Mrs. Fuller?”
Christopher turned and frowned. “I have plans to meet with Cynthia for lunch.”
