The emergency was a gas leak. While Melody and Cynthia were being treated, the nurses couldn't help but cast disgusted glances at Christopher.
Cynthia, leaving Melody's side, approached him. Now, he was pretending to be deeply concerned about Melody. During the incident, Christopher took a leave of absence and stayed away, not even visiting Cynthia. He snapped back to reality when she finally found him. Horrified, he helped her sit down.
“How is Melody? All the tests are tainted and I couldn’t inform her,” she said, a guilty expression clouding her face.
“It’s not your fault. You’re also a victim,” he replied.
“Has an investigation been done? Was it a gas leak from the pipes?” she asked.
“It’s suspected that the flame went out, but the gas stove’s switch wasn’t turned off,” he said, pursing his lips. This was the feedback from the property management and maintenance team. They had checked and found that the switch was off, the window was open, and the kitchen door was closed, preventing the gas from spreading further.
“Did you use the stove before bed last night?” Christopher asked her.
“I didn’t go into the kitchen at all,” Cynthia said innocently.
He furrowed his brows and asked again, “Was the kitchen door open or closed last night?”
“I wanted to make sure Melody didn’t leave, so I stayed in the living room,” she replied.
He paused. “You didn’t go to your room all night?”
She nodded. “I slept on the couch in the living room so I could hear any noises from the door.”
“How could you be so foolish?” Christopher felt a rush of guilt. It was because he had gone to sleep that Cynthia had stayed in the living room, and because of this, she had inhaled too much gas and fainted.
“I’m fine. I didn’t think there’d be a gas leak,” she sighed. “We had dinner outside last night, and Melody was home alone. So, the gas stove…” She trailed off, her brow furrowed, leaving her sentence unfinished.
Upon reflection, Christopher had calmed down. But his expression darkened when he heard Cynthia’s words. He touched the stove; it could only be Melody. Unintentional or intentional? She had caused Cynthia’s poisoning and put herself at risk too. Recalling how Melody had once harmed herself while trying to hurt others, he strongly suspected this time wasn’t an accident, especially since nothing like this had happened before.
His hands clenched into fists as he glared at the ward’s door. He could barely restrain himself from storming in and confronting Melody.
“Christopher, Mel probably just forgot because she was busy. Her situation is worse than mine. Don’t be angry with her,” Cynthia said, shaking his arm.
“Your safety swarms! She got you into this mess. This isn’t just forgetting—it’s clearly an attempt to kill!” Christopher said angrily.
“She hurt herself too. She didn’t do it on purpose,” she tried to defend Melody.
“Have you forgotten? Half a month ago, when you got burned, wasn’t Melody’s injury worse than yours?” He gritted his teeth. “But it was just a manipulation to make herself look…”
She lowered her head and stayed silent, seemingly unable to find an excuse for Melody’s actions. Finally, she hesitated before saying, “It must be because I’m living in your house that she’s angry. Help me find a place to stay, and I’ll move out.”
