Chapter 35

At 10:00 am, Melody went downstairs to buy ingredients, cooked the three dishes Christopher had requested, and delivered them to his company on time. This was her first time in a public setting in her two years of marriage. Despite her confusion about Christopher's behavior, she simply placed the food at the reception desk.

After explaining her purpose, the receptionist scrutinized her and coldly said, "Please leave before I call security. Our company refuses entry to unauthorized personnel."

Melody pursed her lips, remained silent for a moment, then hesitated before dialing Sheldon's number instead of messaging Christopher. Stepping outside to answer, she spoke briefly with Sheldon and waited for him to meet her.

Upstairs, when Sheldon hung up, Christopher's face darkened, his eyes narrowing. "Why did she call you again?" His own phone remained silent. It was maddening.

Sheldon felt a chill but replied professionally, "Mrs. Fuller probably thought you were in a meeting and didn't want to disturb you. I'm your assistant, responsible for..."

Christopher wasn't convinced. He glared at his phone and gritted his teeth. "She couldn't have at least called to ask...?"

Sheldon was speechless. He thought, "You had her deliver the food and didn't even let me inform the receptionist to clear her entry?" He asked, "Mr. Fuller, should I go downstairs—"

Before he finished, Christopher snapped, "She's got legs. Let her bring it up here!"

Sheldon was speechless. As Christopher spoke, he dialed a number. After several rings, it was answered.

"Can't you come up yourself? Is Sheldon your assistant or mine? What gives you the right to order him around?" he barked.

There was a three-second silence, followed by a cold reply, "The receptionist won't let outsiders in."

Christopher was speechless. His anger dissipated. After a pause, he said, "Didn't you think to introduce yourself?"

"Introduce what? Does she even know who Melody Smith is?" she said.

"Say that you're..." Christopher faltered. If she said "Mrs. Fuller," the receptionist would call Sheldon, who would then clear her, but...

He couldn't say it. He had never publicly acknowledged her existence, not even at home.

On the other end, Melody heard his silence and snorted coldly. Could she introduce herself as Christopher's wife? She knew better than to pretend.

After a long pause, Christopher finally said, "You can call me..."

Melody was speechless. Hadn't she already told Sheldon? Right, Sheldon was his assistant and should take instructions from him. She hoped these next ten days would pass quickly; then she wouldn't have to serve the useless Christopher anymore.

"I told Sheldon to inform the receptionist. You can just take the elevator to the top floor," Christopher's voice came again.

Melody furrowed her brows. She didn't want to see him, but the call had ended.

"I'm sorry for being rude earlier, miss. Please come in," the receptionist apologized, gesturing her inside.

"It's not a problem. You were just doing your job, and your attitude was fine," Melody replied.

The receptionist, relieved, had initially suspected Melody was one of those women trying to ingratiate herself with Christopher. But seeing Melody's simple attire, she'd only politely asked her to leave. Now, observing her more closely, the receptionist noticed her composed demeanor and elegant appearance. She seemed distinguished, not ordinary. Especially considering Sheldon's instructions to treat Melody respectfully, the receptionist wondered about her true identity.
