Chapter 51: Nowhere to Go
Johnathan nodded slightly, then looked at Sierra. โAm I interrupting?โ
Sierra couldnโt help but smile. Sometimes, Johnathanโs way of speaking was truly sharp. Yaron clearly remembered what had happened last time. If it had just been Sierra, he might have stayed longer, but with Johnathan here, he couldnโt keep up the act. He quickly said, โMr. Johnathan, I just came to check on Sierra. I have class now, so Iโll get going. You two talk.โ
Then he left in a hurry.
Johnathan walked over and naturally placed his hand on Sierraโs forehead again. Feeling that her temperature had gone down, he finally pulled back. He pushed aside the glass of water Yaron had poured and instead poured her a fresh one. Only then did he speak. โWhat did he want!โ
โNo idea,โ Sierra shook her head. She couldnโt care less about Yaron.
But as she thought about something else, she hesitated for a moment and glanced at Johnathan uncertainly.
โSomething on your mind?โ Johnathan asked.
Sierra hesitated even more. Strictly speaking, she and Johnathan werenโt that close. He didnโt even know about her background, yet he had helped her multiple times.
โIf thereโs something, just say it. Didnโt I tell you already? Stop carrying everything alone.โ
Johnathan remained standing by her bedside. Sierraโs heart wavered for a moment, and before she could stop herself, she said, โCan you help me find someone?โ
โWho?โ Johnathan asked directly.
โHer name is Daphne. She was in prison too. My number was 00061. Hers was 00060.โ
At the mention of her prison number, Johnathan glanced at her but didnโt say anything.
โAlright.โ He didnโt ask why she wanted to find this person. He simply agreed.
Sierra felt a weight lift off her chest. She spoke slowly. โSheโs already dead. I just want to know if her family is okay. If possible, Iโd like an address.โ
Johnathan nodded again. He pulled out his phone, typed something, then looked at her.
โWill solving this let you sleep better?โ
Sierra was caught off guard. She hadnโt expected him to notice.
โThe school nurse said you were restless even while getting the IV.โ That was his explanation.
Sierra thought for a moment and nodded. โMaybe.โ
It had been a long time since she had slept well. If she hadnโt seen it with her own eyes, she wouldnโt have believed such horrors existed in this world. Just like if she hadnโt lived through it herself, she wouldnโt have known how deep madness could go.
โThank you for today, Johnathan. Youโve helped me so many timesโI donโt even know how to repay you.โ Sierra changed the subject. She didnโt want to dwell on heavy topics.
โIf you want to repay me, get better soon and focus on your research. I want to see if you can surprise me,โ Johnathan said casually.
โDonโt worry.โ Sierra smiled. Even if he hadnโt reminded her, she wouldโve worked hard on it. Her grandmotherโs health wouldnโt hold up forever.
After finishing her IV, she felt much better and didnโt want to lie down any longer. She got up to leave.
โWhere to? Iโll drive you,โ Johnathan asked.
Sierra thought for a moment, then said, โThe hospital.โ Her grandmother had a private room with a small couch where she could rest for a bit. Besides, she had nowhere else to go. Despite living in a huge city, she had no home of her own.
Johnathan glanced at her but said nothing. He simply led her to his car. Maybe it was because Johnathan was there, but Sierra felt at ease. Without realizing it, she drifted off to sleep.
When she woke up, she realized they werenโt heading to the hospital. She wasnโt alarmed, just puzzled. โWhere are we going?โ
โMy place.โ As he spoke, Johnathan smoothly turned into a gated community, parked the car, and opened the door, signaling for her to get out. Before Sierra could say anything, he added, โI have some questions about your research. I need your help.โ
Her chest felt warm. She knew Johnathan was only saying that to protect her pride. He knew she had nowhere to go, so he brought her home.
Her lips curled up slightly. โMr. Johnathan, being too humble is just fake modesty. Careful with that.โ Then, she stepped out of the car and said plainly, โThanks for taking me in. I really donโt have anywhere else to go.โ
She was straightforward. Johnathan had already seen her at her lowest. There was nothing to hide.
โThe barโฆ the wayโฆ do you serve meals too?โ She was really hungry. She hadnโt eaten a single thing since morning.
Johnathan raised a brow. โYeah. You do the dishes.โ
