Chapter 385 The Enemy of My Enemy
From the moment Jose could remember, heโd been taught to respect his older brother, to always put Johnathan first.
And for a long time, he truly believed it. Even when Johnathan never gave him so much as a passing glance, Jose still looked up to him.
But not anymoreโnot since last time.
Johnathan never saw them as family. So why did Jose have to keep stepping aside?
He didnโt feel like he owed Johnathan anything. If his mother couldnโt keep her man, that was her own failure. Why did she get to blame everything on them?
His mom was crazy too. All those years of giving inโฆ and she was still giving.
Now, just for Johnathanโs sake, she was actually willing to send him away.
Sometimes, Jose seriously wanted to ask her: Whoโs your real son?
He drove to the bar heโd been frequenting lately. He had his own private room there. But without Shaneโwho had since been exiledโit was just him now.
Drinking alone was boring, so Jose sat out in the lounge.
He was striking and sharply dressed. The moment he sat down, peopleโmen and women alikeโstarted approaching. He waved them all off, uninterested.
He drank and silently mulled over how to deal with Johnathan.
Heโd thought Quinn might destroy Johnathan and Sierraโs relationshipโmake his perfect brother feel pain for once.
But clearly, heโd overestimated her. Sheโd barely lasted before screwing up.
If even Quinn wasnโt good enoughโฆ who was?
As his frustration simmered, someone slid into the seat beside him.
โNeed help?โ the stranger asked.
Jose didnโt even lift his head. โGet lost.โ
โI can help you get what you want. Want to try?โ the man coaxed.
Jose didnโt even bother repeating himself. He just scowled and prepared to leave.
Thatโs when the man said, โHaving a brother that perfect must be tough.โ
Jose froze, his eyes narrowing sharply.
โWho are you?โ
His and Johnathanโs identities were closely guarded. No ordinary person should even know who they wereโlet alone that they were brothers.
Jose studied the man. Average looks. Completely unfamiliar. Which only made him more wary.
Noticing the suspicion in Joseโs eyes, the man gave a small smile.
โNo need to be so guarded. In this case, we share the same enemy,โ
โYou want to bring Johnathan down? So do I.โ
Jose sneered. โYou want to team up? What makes you think youโre worth it?โ
The man leaned in and whispered a few words.
Joseโs expression changed.
After a moment of silence, he asked, โWhat do you want me to do?โ
โHelp me get Quinn out.โ
Joseโs eyes narrowed. โYou get her out, and you think you can take Johnathan down?โ
โI wonโt say itโs a sure thingโbut weโve got a fifty-fifty shot.โ
โAnd you know what Quinnโs capable of. With her on our side, the odds go way up.โ
Jose studied him, eyes cold, calculating.
Finally, he said, โI canโt promise anything. Iโll try.โ
โGood enough,โ the man replied with a smile.
Jose left quickly.
In the days that followed, Johnathan was tied up with work. He hadnโt had time to dwell on personal mattersโthough, truthfully, he still hadnโt made up his mind about them anyway.
That was when he suddenly got a call from Stone.
โWhat? Quinn escaped?โ
โYes,โ Stone said.
It was too sensitive to discuss over the phone, so he came to Johnathanโs office in person.
โQuinn had a sudden flare-up of her blood condition. The detention center couldnโt handle it, so they transferred her to a hospital.โ
โShe escaped from the hospital,โ Stone explained.
โWhat about the surveillance footage?โ Johnathan asked.
Stone had already come prepared. He pulled up the video.
A doctor led a nurse into Quinnโs room. When they came out, the doctor was still thereโbut the nurse wasnโt the same.
Johnathan instantly recognized the second nurseโit was Quinn.
It was such a simple swap. Almost laughably so.
โHave you investigated?โ Johnathan asked.
