Chapter 385 The Enemy of My Enemy

From the moment Jose could remember, heโ€™d been taught to respect his older brother, to always put Johnathan first.

And for a long time, he truly believed it. Even when Johnathan never gave him so much as a passing glance, Jose still looked up to him.

But not anymoreโ€”not since last time.

Johnathan never saw them as family. So why did Jose have to keep stepping aside?

He didnโ€™t feel like he owed Johnathan anything. If his mother couldnโ€™t keep her man, that was her own failure. Why did she get to blame everything on them?

His mom was crazy too. All those years of giving inโ€ฆ and she was still giving.

Now, just for Johnathanโ€™s sake, she was actually willing to send him away.

Sometimes, Jose seriously wanted to ask her: Whoโ€™s your real son?

He drove to the bar heโ€™d been frequenting lately. He had his own private room there. But without Shaneโ€”who had since been exiledโ€”it was just him now.

Drinking alone was boring, so Jose sat out in the lounge.

He was striking and sharply dressed. The moment he sat down, peopleโ€”men and women alikeโ€”started approaching. He waved them all off, uninterested.

He drank and silently mulled over how to deal with Johnathan.

Heโ€™d thought Quinn might destroy Johnathan and Sierraโ€™s relationshipโ€”make his perfect brother feel pain for once.

But clearly, heโ€™d overestimated her. Sheโ€™d barely lasted before screwing up.

If even Quinn wasnโ€™t good enoughโ€ฆ who was?

As his frustration simmered, someone slid into the seat beside him.

โ€œNeed help?โ€ the stranger asked.

Jose didnโ€™t even lift his head. โ€œGet lost.โ€

โ€œI can help you get what you want. Want to try?โ€ the man coaxed.

Jose didnโ€™t even bother repeating himself. He just scowled and prepared to leave.

Thatโ€™s when the man said, โ€œHaving a brother that perfect must be tough.โ€

Jose froze, his eyes narrowing sharply.

โ€œWho are you?โ€

His and Johnathanโ€™s identities were closely guarded. No ordinary person should even know who they wereโ€”let alone that they were brothers.

Jose studied the man. Average looks. Completely unfamiliar. Which only made him more wary.

Noticing the suspicion in Joseโ€™s eyes, the man gave a small smile.

โ€œNo need to be so guarded. In this case, we share the same enemy,โ€

โ€œYou want to bring Johnathan down? So do I.โ€

Jose sneered. โ€œYou want to team up? What makes you think youโ€™re worth it?โ€

The man leaned in and whispered a few words.

Joseโ€™s expression changed.

After a moment of silence, he asked, โ€œWhat do you want me to do?โ€

โ€œHelp me get Quinn out.โ€

Joseโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œYou get her out, and you think you can take Johnathan down?โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t say itโ€™s a sure thingโ€”but weโ€™ve got a fifty-fifty shot.โ€

โ€œAnd you know what Quinnโ€™s capable of. With her on our side, the odds go way up.โ€

Jose studied him, eyes cold, calculating.

Finally, he said, โ€œI canโ€™t promise anything. Iโ€™ll try.โ€

โ€œGood enough,โ€ the man replied with a smile.

Jose left quickly.

In the days that followed, Johnathan was tied up with work. He hadnโ€™t had time to dwell on personal mattersโ€”though, truthfully, he still hadnโ€™t made up his mind about them anyway.

That was when he suddenly got a call from Stone.

โ€œWhat? Quinn escaped?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Stone said.

It was too sensitive to discuss over the phone, so he came to Johnathanโ€™s office in person.

โ€œQuinn had a sudden flare-up of her blood condition. The detention center couldnโ€™t handle it, so they transferred her to a hospital.โ€

โ€œShe escaped from the hospital,โ€ Stone explained.

โ€œWhat about the surveillance footage?โ€ Johnathan asked.

Stone had already come prepared. He pulled up the video.

A doctor led a nurse into Quinnโ€™s room. When they came out, the doctor was still thereโ€”but the nurse wasnโ€™t the same.

Johnathan instantly recognized the second nurseโ€”it was Quinn.

It was such a simple swap. Almost laughably so.

โ€œHave you investigated?โ€ Johnathan asked.
