Chapter 379 The Calm After the Storm
Over on Mateoโs side, Sierra kept checking her phone anxiously. That morning, right after getting into the car, sheโd received a call from Jonathan and was swiftly transferred to another vehicle.
The original car continued driving along the planned route. Sure enough, not long after, it lost control. At the same time, a large truck came barreling down the opposite lane.
Fortunately, the driver had been briefed in advance and jumped out just before the crash. No one was hurt.
After switching vehicles, Sierra arrived at Mateoโs safehouse. Stone was there tooโmore than enough to ensure her safety.
When she found out Quinn had posted a hit on her through the dark web, Sierra went completely silent.
She couldnโt understand how Quinn had gone so far off the deep endโactually wanting her dead. The thought made her even more worried about Jonathan.
โDonโt worry, Sierra,โ Mateo reassured her. โJonathanโs prepared. Quinn wonโt be able to touch him.โ
Sierra nodded. This time, theyโd taken the initiative. With Quinn caught off guard, she was bound to fall into the trap.
While they were still talking, Jonathan arrived to pick her up.
โIs it over?โ Sierra looked at him.
โYeah. Sheโs been handed over to the police,โ Jonathan replied.
Heโd questioned her about a few thingsโsome she answered, some she didnโt.
The case was too entangled, with too many people involved. Jonathan didnโt have the time or resources to keep digging on his own, so he turned her in.
When the police took her away, Quinn still looked completely calm. When Jonathan had confronted her with her fatal mistake, she only showed a flash of realization and said, โSo thatโs what gave me away?โ
She added, โBut I didnโt knowโฆ I was abandoned. I thought Iโd already treated her well.โ
There was something disturbingly strange in her expression as she said that. Jonathan had then asked her one last question.
โBack thenโdid you approach my mother on purpose?โ
Quinn didnโt deny it. She simply said, โJonathan, youโve never lived in an orphanage. If you had, youโd understand why I did what I did.โ
After that, she stopped talking. When Jonathan asked her about the source of the drugs, she said nothing at all.
The case involved too many parties, and Jonathan didnโt hide any of it. He shared everything Quinn had said with Stone, Maddox, and the others.
Maddox looked especially grim. Heโd always believed he treated Quinn wellโand yet she had made her move during his birthday party, implicating members of the Treno family and almost causing serious conflict between the two families.
โSheโs truly ruthless,โ Maddox said with gritted teeth.
Even he couldnโt go that far. He could be cruel to outsiders, yesโbut with those he was close to, heโd always hesitate.
He felt a deep sense of disappointment. But the one who had been hurt the most, he believed, was Jonathan.
Jonathan had been burned the worst. Heโd treated Quinn so well, and sheโd been harming him all along.
Jonathan, however, remained calm. โNow that we know Quinn had her own agenda, we need to reconsider everything she told us.โ
โNot necessarily,โ Jonathan shook his head. โWe wonโt know until we find him. Itโs very possible the two of them were working together.โ
Theyโd been searching for Timothy for a long time with no results.
The group decided to tap into their respective networks and investigate both Timothy and Quinn further. Once the plan was set, they started to part waysโuntil Sierra asked the one question no one else had brought up.
โWhat about Dora?โ
She had clearly been left out of the earlier discussion. Jonathan frowned slightly. โIโve already arranged for someone to look after her.โ
Before Sierra could say anything, Jonathan added, โSierra, I know what youโre going to say.โ
Then he continued, โBut no. I canโt take the risk.โ
Even if Dora was just a three-year-old childโeven if she was innocentโJonathan didnโt want Sierra to have any more contact with her.
Who knew what Dora might do?
After thinking for a moment, Sierra said, โI wonโt see her. Butโฆ Iโd still like to call her every day.โ
She could sense how much Dora depended on her, and she didnโt want the child to feel abandoned by everyone.
โAlright,โ Jonathan agreed. Then he drove her home.
On the way, he said, โEven though Quinnโs in custody for now, donโt let your guard down.โ
Quinn alone didnโt have the power to stir up this much trouble. He was worried about whoever might be behind her.
โOkay,โ Sierra replied.
One of her greatest strengths was that she listenedโand never acted like a liability.
