Chapter 365: Cracks in Trust

Stone said bluntly, โ€œLetโ€™s go check on him.โ€ They couldnโ€™t afford to let something truly happen.

Sierra couldnโ€™t deny her disappointment. She understood Johnathanโ€™s concern, but she couldnโ€™t accept his controlling behavior. He shouldโ€™ve understood what this field meant to her. Unlike him, who never cared much for such challenges in the past, she loved it. From the first moment she was introduced to this line of work, she had fallen in love with it, and that love had only grown. He knew that. He knew all of it. Yet, just because something might happen, he wanted to shut it all down.

Same person, but how could there be such a stark change? The Johnathan from before respected her. But this Johnathanโ€ฆ

Sierra felt suffocated. She had never felt like this before. It was like someone had stabbed her in the chest. She walked along the street, not sure where she was going. She didnโ€™t want to go back to the home she shared with Johnathanโ€”not one bit. She didnโ€™t want to return to the small apartment she had bought, either. Dickson was back. If she went there now, he would definitely guess she and Johnathan had fought.

In the end, Sierra ducked into a small cafรฉ on the side of the road. She needed time to cool off. Johnathan had dumped too much information on her today. She needed to process it all.

First motive? Whether or not Quinn had taken part in everything. If she had, then why? What was herโ€ฆ

And then there was Johnathanโ€™s pastโ€”far more complicated than she had ever imagined. Every time she thought she understood him, something new would shake that belief. Ninety percent of the banned substances circulating now had originated from Johnathanโ€™s early research. Just how many of those things had he made during that time? And what mindset had he been in when he did it?

After getting to know Johnathan, Sierra hadโ€ฆ

In this day and age, traditional โ€œgood guysโ€ didnโ€™t last long. Still, some of Johnathanโ€™s past choices left her shaken.

She remembered what Shane had once said to her. In some ways, Johnathan truly wasnโ€™t any different from them. And if this was all that had surfaced, what else didnโ€™t she know?

Would there come a day when someone shoved evidence in her face, proof of Johnathan torturing people? The very thought made her tremble.

She couldnโ€™t bear imagining Johnathan being like Shane and the others; it sickened her. And yet, it wasnโ€™t impossible.

His capacity for empathy had always been limited. People he didnโ€™t care about were no different to him than stray cats or dogs.

Sierraโ€™s expression shifted several times. She was so deep in thought she didnโ€™t notice someone standing in front of herโ€”not until they spoke.

โ€œMiss? Miss, are you okay?โ€

Sierra looked up and saw a mixed-race man standing there. She instinctively leaned back in alarm. Seeing this, the man quickly raised his hands. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™m not here to hurt you. You just didnโ€™t look well; are you feeling sick? Do you need help?โ€

He sounded genuinely concerned. Sierra shook her head quickly. โ€œNo, thank you.โ€ She called the waiter over, paid her bill, and left in a hurry. She couldnโ€™t tell if the man had been truly kind, but his handsome face and soft, gentle gaze made her wary.

The moment Sierra stepped out, Johnathan arrived. In fact, heโ€™d been following her the whole time. When she entered the cafรฉ, he hadnโ€™t gone inโ€”heโ€™d just waited in the car. But when he saw a man approach her, he couldnโ€™t sit still anymore. He was about to get out when Sierra suddenly came outside.

Then it hit her. Her expression changed instantly.

โ€œI have a tracker on me.โ€

Her tone wasnโ€™t a questionโ€”it was a fact.

After the Kason incident, she had asked Johnathan to remove anything hidden in her phone. He had personally taken care of it. At the time, she hadnโ€™t doubted him. But now, she felt like a fool.

Seeing her face, Johnathanโ€™s heart sank. He knew this was bad. He immediately said, โ€œThe trackerโ€™s still there, but itโ€™s usually off. I only turned it on today because I was worried something might happen to youโ€”โ€

โ€œJohnathan! What else have you lied to me about?โ€

Sierra stared at him, eyes full of disappointment. If he had just told her about the tracker, she might have agreed. But he hadnโ€™t even mentioned itโ€”and even told her her phone was clean. In that moment, all the trust she had in him collapsed. She no longer knew how many more things he had kept from her.
