Chapter 355: Shadows in the Woods

Quinn thought it through carefully. She was almost certain Sierra must have overheard her late-night muttering and told Johnathan. Still, Sierra likely hadnโ€™t caught much. Otherwise, things wouldnโ€™t be this quiet. Sheโ€™d thought sheโ€™d hidden it wellโ€”but Sierra had heard something after all.

Annoyance flashed in Quinnโ€™s eyes. But she wasnโ€™t someone who lost control easily. If she were, she wouldnโ€™t have managed to fool everyone around her for so many yearsโ€”not even Johnathan had seen through her.

Forcing herself to calm down, she began thinking about her next move.

Meanwhile, Johnathan had already met up with Mateo. Mateo had pulled an all-nighter without complaint. โ€œI tracked the video you sent. Look at this,โ€ he said, pulling up a frame from surveillance footage. It was an image of the man leading Dora into a car.

โ€œDonโ€™t bother,โ€ Mateo added. โ€œThe carโ€™s using fake plates. And it vanished once it reached the outskirtsโ€”no more footage past that.โ€

Not every area was covered by surveillance. Out in the rural forests, there were blind spots. Mateo enlarged one frame, showing half the manโ€™s face.

โ€œItโ€™s not Timothy,โ€ Johnathan said flatly. Heโ€™d seen Timothy before. This guy resembled him a little, but it wasnโ€™t the same person.

โ€œThen why would Dora go with him?โ€ Mateo frowned, confused.

Johnathan didnโ€™t answer right away. His fingers tapped rhythmically against the table. After a moment, he said, โ€œCheck if Quinn made any calls late last night.โ€

Mateo shot him a startled glance but did as asked. It only took a few minutes.

โ€œNothing. Her phoneโ€™s been inactive since 10 p.m. But Johnathanโ€”what are you thinking?โ€

โ€œNothing.โ€ Johnathan rubbed his temples. He hoped he was just being paranoid.

โ€œI mean, come on. Quinn practically grew up with us. You know what sheโ€™s like. And weโ€™re talking about her own daughter.โ€

Ever since Wayne had asked Quinn to recuperate at the family estate, heโ€™d had a vague unease in the back of his mind. But there was no evidenceโ€”nothing concrete. Even his suspicions felt unfounded.

โ€œForget it,โ€ he said. โ€œLetโ€™s just focus on finding Dora first.โ€

While Johnathan and Mateo worked to trace Doraโ€™s whereabouts, Sierra remained preoccupied at the lab. During lunch, Autumn noticed. โ€œWhatโ€™s up? Youโ€™ve been spaced out all morning.โ€

โ€œDoraโ€™s missing,โ€ Sierra said quietly.

Autumn had met Dora and adored the sweet little girl. She sat up, instantly alarmed. โ€œWhat happened?โ€

Sierra gave her a brief rundown of how Dora had been taken.

โ€œDonโ€™t think the worst yet. Maybe it really was her father,โ€ Autumn said, trying to soothe her.

Sierra shook her head. โ€œHer dadโ€™s not a good person either.โ€ After hesitating, she told Autumn the truthโ€”how Timothy had once used Dora as a test subject. Autumn slammed her hand on the table.

โ€œThat monster! Thatโ€™s his own daughter! What kind of person does that?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s why Iโ€™m so worried,โ€ Sierra murmured.

Autumn was about to respond when Sierraโ€™s phone rangโ€”it was an unknown number. Without thinking, Sierra picked it up. โ€œHello?โ€

โ€œMs. Sierraโ€”help me!โ€

It was Doraโ€™s voice. Sierra shot to her feet. โ€œDora! Dora, where are you?โ€

But before Dora could answer, the call was cut off. Sierra tried calling back, but the number was already unreachable. She didnโ€™t hesitate. She called Johnathan right away and told him everything.

โ€œStay at the lab. Iโ€™m coming to you now. If they call again, no matter what they sayโ€”donโ€™t believe them. Just wait for me.โ€ Johnathanโ€™s voice was sharp and commanding. He was afraid it might be a trap, with Sierra as the real target.

What was happening? Was Dora okay?

Johnathan, Mateo, and Stone arrived not long after. Mateo had already traced the call on the way overโ€”it had come from a virtual number. Still, his skills paid off.

โ€œI was able to pinpoint a rough signal locationโ€”it came from here,โ€ Mateo said, circling an area on the map. It was in the outskirtsโ€”just as theyโ€™d suspected.

โ€œIโ€™ll take my team to check it out,โ€ Stone volunteered. His people werenโ€™t ordinaryโ€”they knew how to move without being seen.

Johnathan nodded. โ€œBe careful.โ€
