Hearing those words, Maddox let out a cold laugh. “Amanda, you’ve always spoiled him, indulged him. Anytime someone tried to discipline him, you stopped them. The Treno family can’t cover for him this time—he’s really messed up.”

“What kind of trouble could he have gotten into?” Trev’s mother retorted. “He’s not a bad kid, just a bit too playful.”

And so what if he liked women? Just pay them off and be done with it.

“Look, why don’t you hear Maddox out first,” Maddox’s father interjected, knowing his son well enough to realize this wasn’t something minor. He frowned. “What exactly happened?”

“Father, you’ve probably already heard there was an incident at my birthday party today?”

Everyone nodded slightly.

“Someone was nearly assaulted. I investigated—it was Trev.”

At that, Trev’s mother cried out, “That’s it? That’s what this is about? You said it yourself—nearly. Nothing actually happened! And even if it did, we can settle it, can’t we?”

“Shut your mouth!” Talhand, who had been silent until now, finally spoke. He knew that the guests invited to his grandson’s party were all from influential families. Not a single one of them was ordinary.

“Whose family was she from?” Talhand asked.

“It was Sierra—Jonathan’s woman,” Maddox answered.

The entire room went still. What? Jonathan’s woman? Everyone remembered clearly how Jonathan had dealt with the Zach family not long ago. And he’d gone head-to-head with the Goodman family too. Talhand had specifically asked his eldest grandson about it and learned that Sierra had been the reason for it all. From that alone, he understood how much Sierra meant to Jonathan. And now, someone from the second branch had gone and offended her?

Talhand couldn’t hold back. He picked up his cane and struck Trey with it.

If beating this bastard to death would solve the problem, he would’ve done it already. But he knew what Jonathan was like. This wasn’t something that would be easily settled.

With that in mind, Maddox stepped in and stopped Talhand. “Grandpa, hand him over to Jonathan.”

“No—no!” Trev’s mother panicked.

“You can’t hand Trev over to Jonathan! Maddox, Maddox, I’m begging you—he’s your cousin! You can’t be this heartless! If you give him to Jonathan, he won’t survive!” She knew just how ruthless Jonathan could be.

Maddox responded coolly, “This is the only way to keep him alive.” Voluntarily handing Trev over was better than waiting for Jonathan to come for him.

“You two are close—talk to him, tell him it was—”

Before she could finish, Talhand cut her off. “Enough! Maddox, do as you said.” After all, it was their own fault for failing to raise their child properly. He’d warned the second branch many times that spoiling the boy would lead to disaster, but they never listened. Maybe now they’d finally learn their lesson.

Still, Trey was his grandson. Talhand knew he’d have to swallow his pride and beg Jonathan for mercy.

Maddox nodded, then brought up something even more crucial. “Grandpa, Father—I had someone look into the two people Trev claimed were gossiping in the courtyard. We couldn’t find them.”

The moment Trev had told his story, Maddox had sent someone to track down those two men—but they’d turned up nothing.

Trev, gasping in pain, still found the strength to protest. “I told the truth, Maddox. You have to believe me—I didn’t lie.”

Maddox didn’t reply. He believed Trey wasn’t lying. His cousin might be reckless, but he was a coward at heart—especially when it came to Jonathan. If Trey had known the woman was Sierra, there’s no way he would’ve laid a finger on her. And Trey’s presence in that courtyard—what a coincidence. Too much of a coincidence. Someone had orchestrated this.

Caught in the crossfire. But now that Trev was involved, it wasn’t that simple. Trey was a member of the Treno family. Was someone trying to spark a rift between them and Jonathan? If this wasn’t handled properly, that’s exactly what would happen.

Talhand had lived long enough to recognize the signs. After hearing everything, he made a swift decision. “Your father and I will investigate this. Right now, what matters most is going to Jonathan and explaining the truth.” Better it come from them than from someone with an agenda.

Maddox didn’t waste a second. He headed straight for the hospital.
