Chapter 322: Things Left Unsaid
Thinking back on Quinnโs statementโthat Dora had only recently returned to her side a few months agoโcombined with Doraโs unintentional mention of Quinnโs unavailability, Sierra felt a little heavy-hearted. She excused herself, saying she needed to make a phone call, and stepped out of the hospital room. Not long after, Johnathan followed.
โYou mad?โ Johnathan asked, watching her carefully.
Sierra shook her head. โNot really. I know what Mateoโs like.โ She didnโt want to dwell on it, so she changed the subject. โI actually brought Dora here to talk with Quinn about what we should do with her. Iโm going back to school tomorrowโI canโt watch her all day anymore. Whatโs the plan for Dora?โ
Johnathan had been considering this for the past couple of days. Heโd considered hiring a nanny, but he didnโt like strangers in his space. More importantly, given Doraโs current state, he wasnโt comfortable leaving her completely in someone elseโs care. After a moment, he said, โIโll take her with me for now. Iโll bring her to the office.โ
Sierra looked surprised. She hadnโt expected that. โYou sure?โ
After all this time, sheโd come to know Johnathan pretty well. To people who didnโt know him, he might seem easygoing. But in reality, he was picky and hated dealing with hassle. Yet here he was, volunteering to take care of Dora. Then she suddenly remembered something Quinn had said and couldnโt help but ask, โDo you like kids?โ
Johnathan clearly froze for a moment before answering, โNo.โ He let out a sigh, looking exasperated. โI donโt really have a choice right now. Donโt worryโthere are plenty of people at the company. They can help keep an eye on her. And Mateoโs not doing much. Iโll have him come help too.โ
Sierra smiled. โAs long as youโve got it covered.โ
She had originally planned to step out briefly before returning to check on Quinn and take Dora home. But standing there with Johnathan, she suddenly didnโt feel like going back inside.
โDicksonโs got school today, and heโs got exams coming up. I should head back and check in on him. You can bring Dora back with you later,โ she said.
Johnathan frowned. โIโll take you.โ
โNo need!โ
โIโll just call a car,โ Sierra said, waving him off and turning to leave. Johnathan watched her walk away, his brows furrowing slightly. He could tell she wasnโt in a great mood. Was it because of what Mateo said? He went over every word theyโd exchanged and realized it probably wasnโt that. It seemed like Sierraโs mood had shifted right after he said he didnโt like kids. Soโฆ does she want children? The thought hit him like a jolt. His breath caught in his throat.
Chapter 322: Things Left Unsaid
Sierra hadnโt exactly lied. Dickson really did have to go back to school today. The SATs were coming up fast, and the school was cracking downโonly one day off per week. Heโd come home last night, but with everything going on with Dora, Sierra hadnโt really had a chance to talk to him. Now was the perfect time to check in and see how he was doing.
Dickson looked genuinely happy to see her.
โMs. Sierra! What are you doing back?โ
Sheโd told him earlier she might not make it back in time, and heโd already been thinking about heading back to school.
โTimeโs tight, but I made it. Wanted to see how youโre holding up. Just two more weeksโhow are you feeling?โ Sierra asked.
Sheโd always taken a supportive approach to the SATs, never putting pressure on him. She didnโt want him wound too tight.
โIโm good!โ Dickson sounded confident. โI think Iโve got a solid shot at getting into your and Mr. Yaegerโs college.โ
โYouโre aiming for North Salem University?โ
Sierra was surprised. North Salem was well-known, but when it came to computer science, it was only second-best.
โYeah. You and Mr. Johnathan both went thereโI want to go there too,โ Dickson said with a grin.
โAlright, then keep at it. Just remember, donโt stress yourself out too much.โ
โDonโt worry. Oh, and who was that kid yesterday?โ Heโd seen Dora when he got back last night. Sheโd told him she was Mr. Yaegerโs niece, but he was pretty sure Johnathan didnโt have a sister.
โSheโs his sisterโs daughter. Itโs kind of like what weโve got going on,โ Sierra explained.
Dickson was a little surprised but didnโt press the issue. After watching her for a moment, he asked, โMs. Sierra, are you upset about something?โ
Sierra didnโt confirm or deny it. The truth was, she hadnโt felt quite right since leaving the hospital. Sheโd asked Johnathan if he liked kids, and heโd said noโbut heโd been more patient with Dora than she ever expected. If anyone else had said theyโd take a kid to work, she wouldnโt have blinked an eye. But this was Johnathan.
