Chapter 322: Things Left Unsaid

Thinking back on Quinnโ€™s statementโ€”that Dora had only recently returned to her side a few months agoโ€”combined with Doraโ€™s unintentional mention of Quinnโ€™s unavailability, Sierra felt a little heavy-hearted. She excused herself, saying she needed to make a phone call, and stepped out of the hospital room. Not long after, Johnathan followed.

โ€œYou mad?โ€ Johnathan asked, watching her carefully.

Sierra shook her head. โ€œNot really. I know what Mateoโ€™s like.โ€ She didnโ€™t want to dwell on it, so she changed the subject. โ€œI actually brought Dora here to talk with Quinn about what we should do with her. Iโ€™m going back to school tomorrowโ€”I canโ€™t watch her all day anymore. Whatโ€™s the plan for Dora?โ€

Johnathan had been considering this for the past couple of days. Heโ€™d considered hiring a nanny, but he didnโ€™t like strangers in his space. More importantly, given Doraโ€™s current state, he wasnโ€™t comfortable leaving her completely in someone elseโ€™s care. After a moment, he said, โ€œIโ€™ll take her with me for now. Iโ€™ll bring her to the office.โ€

Sierra looked surprised. She hadnโ€™t expected that. โ€œYou sure?โ€

After all this time, sheโ€™d come to know Johnathan pretty well. To people who didnโ€™t know him, he might seem easygoing. But in reality, he was picky and hated dealing with hassle. Yet here he was, volunteering to take care of Dora. Then she suddenly remembered something Quinn had said and couldnโ€™t help but ask, โ€œDo you like kids?โ€

Johnathan clearly froze for a moment before answering, โ€œNo.โ€ He let out a sigh, looking exasperated. โ€œI donโ€™t really have a choice right now. Donโ€™t worryโ€”there are plenty of people at the company. They can help keep an eye on her. And Mateoโ€™s not doing much. Iโ€™ll have him come help too.โ€

Sierra smiled. โ€œAs long as youโ€™ve got it covered.โ€

She had originally planned to step out briefly before returning to check on Quinn and take Dora home. But standing there with Johnathan, she suddenly didnโ€™t feel like going back inside.

โ€œDicksonโ€™s got school today, and heโ€™s got exams coming up. I should head back and check in on him. You can bring Dora back with you later,โ€ she said.

Johnathan frowned. โ€œIโ€™ll take you.โ€

โ€œNo need!โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll just call a car,โ€ Sierra said, waving him off and turning to leave. Johnathan watched her walk away, his brows furrowing slightly. He could tell she wasnโ€™t in a great mood. Was it because of what Mateo said? He went over every word theyโ€™d exchanged and realized it probably wasnโ€™t that. It seemed like Sierraโ€™s mood had shifted right after he said he didnโ€™t like kids. Soโ€ฆ does she want children? The thought hit him like a jolt. His breath caught in his throat.

Chapter 322: Things Left Unsaid

Sierra hadnโ€™t exactly lied. Dickson really did have to go back to school today. The SATs were coming up fast, and the school was cracking downโ€”only one day off per week. Heโ€™d come home last night, but with everything going on with Dora, Sierra hadnโ€™t really had a chance to talk to him. Now was the perfect time to check in and see how he was doing.

Dickson looked genuinely happy to see her.

โ€œMs. Sierra! What are you doing back?โ€

Sheโ€™d told him earlier she might not make it back in time, and heโ€™d already been thinking about heading back to school.

โ€œTimeโ€™s tight, but I made it. Wanted to see how youโ€™re holding up. Just two more weeksโ€”how are you feeling?โ€ Sierra asked.

Sheโ€™d always taken a supportive approach to the SATs, never putting pressure on him. She didnโ€™t want him wound too tight.

โ€œIโ€™m good!โ€ Dickson sounded confident. โ€œI think Iโ€™ve got a solid shot at getting into your and Mr. Yaegerโ€™s college.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re aiming for North Salem University?โ€

Sierra was surprised. North Salem was well-known, but when it came to computer science, it was only second-best.

โ€œYeah. You and Mr. Johnathan both went thereโ€”I want to go there too,โ€ Dickson said with a grin.

โ€œAlright, then keep at it. Just remember, donโ€™t stress yourself out too much.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Oh, and who was that kid yesterday?โ€ Heโ€™d seen Dora when he got back last night. Sheโ€™d told him she was Mr. Yaegerโ€™s niece, but he was pretty sure Johnathan didnโ€™t have a sister.

โ€œSheโ€™s his sisterโ€™s daughter. Itโ€™s kind of like what weโ€™ve got going on,โ€ Sierra explained.

Dickson was a little surprised but didnโ€™t press the issue. After watching her for a moment, he asked, โ€œMs. Sierra, are you upset about something?โ€

Sierra didnโ€™t confirm or deny it. The truth was, she hadnโ€™t felt quite right since leaving the hospital. Sheโ€™d asked Johnathan if he liked kids, and heโ€™d said noโ€”but heโ€™d been more patient with Dora than she ever expected. If anyone else had said theyโ€™d take a kid to work, she wouldnโ€™t have blinked an eye. But this was Johnathan.
