Chapter 281: A Wound That Wonโ€™t Heal

Jonathan had already turned to leave, but he still caught that soft, almost inaudible, โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€ His steps faltered slightly before resuming their usual pace, gradually walking away. He no longer needed that apology. Heโ€™d get justice for himselfโ€”he didnโ€™t need anyone elseโ€™s remorse.

No matter how hard he tried to suppress it, the fury clinging to him refused to fade. Dickson, who had already been a little intimidated, now didnโ€™t even dare to speak. Only Sierra seemed completely unfazed. When she saw him come back, she grinned and said, โ€œCome on, come on, wash your hands and make pieโ€”Iโ€™m starving.โ€

The moment Jonathan saw her smiling face and heard her voice, it felt like heโ€™d stepped out of hell and returned to the world of the living. The frost that clung to him melted, and his whole body relaxed. โ€œAlright.โ€

He washed up and changed into a T-shirt before coming back to make pie with Sierra. Sierra didnโ€™t bring up anything about Chase. She just kept asking questions about how he made and cooked his pies. Jonathan answered patiently, explaining everything step by step.

Dickson watched them from the living room and couldnโ€™t help but admire her. Sierraโ€™s emotional strength was unreal. After pie, Dickson made a quick exit. Sierra glanced at Jonathan and said, โ€œWeโ€™ve got nothing going on this afternoon. Want to invite Mateo and the others over?โ€

Jonathan knew exactly why she asked. โ€œNo need. Iโ€™m fine. He doesnโ€™t have any power over me anymore.โ€ Sierra looked at him for a moment. โ€œIโ€™m not asking what youโ€™re going to do. Just promise me one thingโ€”donโ€™t get hurt.โ€

His heart warmed. โ€œOkay.โ€ He really was lucky to have Sierra. Without her, he mightโ€™ve already lost control and done something he couldnโ€™t take back.

When Jonathan said he wouldnโ€™t let it go, he meant it. Come Monday, he launched a fresh wave of attacks on the Zach familyโ€”more aggressive than before. Susie had been looking more and more exhausted lately, worn down by the problems plaguing her family. Chase felt a twinge of guilt when he saw her. โ€œIโ€™m sorry this thing between me and Jonathan dragged you into it.โ€

โ€œWhat are you even talking about?โ€ Susie gave him a disapproving look. Then, after a pause, a trace of sorrow crept into her expression. โ€œThis is my fault too. Weโ€™re both to blame.โ€

They exchanged a long glance, the kind only two people who shared history could understand.

โ€œDonโ€™t,โ€ Susie said, her tone firm. She knew that the more Chase got involved, the worse things would get between him and Jonathan. โ€œIโ€™ll talk to Jonathan myself.โ€

This mess started with her. She just hoped Jonathan wouldnโ€™t take it out on the entire Zach family. โ€œDonโ€™t go,โ€ Chase said, shaking his head. โ€œYou know how he is. Talking to him wonโ€™t work.โ€

Then something occurred to him. โ€œMaybe you should try that girlโ€”Sierra.โ€ The memory of that day at Jonathanโ€™s house was still vivid. The way she had calmed himโ€”heโ€™d never seen anything like it. If anyone could bring Jonathan back to his senses, it was probably her.

โ€œSierra?โ€ Susie repeated thoughtfully.

At the North Salem University lab building, Sierra was monitoring some data. She hadnโ€™t gone to the cafeteria, deciding instead to survive on instant noodles. Just then, security calledโ€”someone was here to see her. Sheโ€™d just wrapped up her work, so she headed downstairs, assuming it might be Shane.

Instead, she was met with a strangerโ€”an elegant, well-dressed middle-aged woman. โ€œSierra?โ€ Susie greeted her with a gentle smile. โ€œIโ€™m Joseโ€™s mother. Can we talk?โ€

Sierraโ€™s eyes narrowed, her expression immediately turning cold. โ€œSorry. I have an experiment to finish.โ€ โ€œMs. Xander, I wonโ€™t take up much of your time. Please.โ€ Susieโ€™s tone was calm and polite. If she had come in acting entitled or self-important, Sierra wouldโ€™ve walked away without a word. But the womanโ€™s soft approach left her with no clear way to refuse.

Finally, she nodded. They didnโ€™t go farโ€”just stepped into a quiet corner near the building. โ€œYou already know who I am, so Iโ€™ll get straight to the point,โ€ Susie said. โ€œIโ€™m here to ask you to speak with Jonathan. Heโ€™s coming down hard on my family. I know he hates me. But this has nothing to do with my relatives. If he needs someone to take it out on, let it be me.โ€

Susie wasnโ€™t foolish. Sheโ€™d done her homework before coming here and knew what kind of person Sierra was. So she didnโ€™t waste time with pleasantriesโ€”she just laid her cards on the table.
