Chapter 250: The Name He Never Told Her
Mateo immediately realized he had said too much. His expression turned uneasy, and Maddox quickly stepped in. โHe took his motherโs last name,โ Maddox explained smoothly.
โI see,โ Sierra nodded, not pressing the issue. Mateo and the others, however, were still unsettledโespecially Mateo. He had no idea if Jonathan had deliberately kept this from Sierra. And if Jonathan found out that he was the one who let it slipโฆ Mateo didnโt even want to imagine the consequences.
Noticing his panic, Sierra chuckled. โI didnโt hear anything. Donโt worry.โ Hearing her say that made Mateo feel even guiltier.
Screw it. Since the secret was already out, he might as well go all in. โItโs not a big deal,โ he admitted. โItโs just that not many people know about his real name, and he doesnโt like using it.โ He then added, โSierra, you and Jon are together. If you ask him, he wonโt keep it from you.โ
Sierra only smiled in response. Before, she had always thought she knew Jonathan well. She was aware that there were things he didnโt reveal, but she had never minded. She had even tolerated his controlling tendencies. But now, she realized how little she actually knew about him. She didnโt even know his real name. If one day Jonathan disappeared, she wouldnโt even know where to start looking for him. She had never thought about it before. But now that she was in Capital City, she was beginning to see all the gaps between them.
Maddox, ever the perceptive one, could tell that todayโs conversation had planted doubts in Sierraโs mind. He immediately reassured her, โSierra, donโt overthink it. Itโs not like weโre hiding anything. Itโs just that some things are better for him to tell you himself.โ He added, โIf he hasnโt mentioned it before, itโs probably because he doesnโt think itโs important. His family is big, but there arenโt many people he actually cares about.โ
To be exact, the only person Jonathan truly cared about in his family was Wayne Wynn. As for his biological father? Jonathan couldnโt care less.
โYeah, Sierra, thatโs all there is to it. Donโt read too much into it,โ Mateo said, wanting to smack his past self for talking too much. Sierra smiled and went along with the change in topic. She casually asked about the Maviston situation, and Maddox shared what he could.
โKason was sentenced to death. Itโll be carried out soon. His father and several other key figures were also sentenced, including the deputy warden and a few prison officials. As for Shane, he left no evidence behind.โ
โKason didnโt turn on him?โ Sierra asked, surprised.
Maddox shook his head. โNo. The Richardson family took full responsibility. Kason claimed everything was on him.โ Otherwise, Kasonโs father wouldnโt have escaped execution either. That genuinely surprised Sierra. Kason, taking all the blame? That kind of personโwho only ever looked out for himselfโwas capable of something like that?
Seeing her disbelief, Maddox added, โThe Richardson family isnโt just him and his father. There are others. And Kason does have things he cares about.โ
โThat kind of scum actually has a weakness?โ Sierra let out a cold laugh. She rarely showed strong emotions, but true disgust always broke through. For her to openly express such hatred toward Kason showed just how much she despised him.
โKasonโs not stupid. By taking all the blame, at least his family can survive. Otherwise, their fate wouldโve been even worse,โ Maddox said. After a slight hesitation, he added, โAnd based on what we found, Shane truly had no involvement in this. At most, he knew about it.โ
โThatโs impossible.โ Sierra rejected it instantly. โHe was involved.โ She could never forget the suffering she endured during those three years. Maddox didnโt argue.
They sat around for a while longer before eventually leaving. Once they were gone, Dickson hesitated as if he wanted to say something. He had overheard everything Maddox and the others had said. He didnโt think things were as simple as they made it seem, but he didnโt know how to put it into words.
Sierra noticed and gave him a small smile. โAlright, letโs eat.โ The gathering was canceled, but that didnโt mean they had to waste a good meal.
As they ate, Sierra took out her phone and sent Jonathan a message. She wasnโt surprised when she didnโt receive a reply. She thought back to the name Mateo had accidentally let slip. She pressed her lips together. Even she knew about the Wynn family. A family that had existed for centuries, with an international reputation. Soโฆ Jonathan was part of that Wynn family? She had always suspected that his background was extraordinary.
She let out a small laugh. Surprisingly, she didnโt feel any pressure from the revelation. Maybe itโs because Iโve always known there was an ocean between us. Jonathanโs background could be as shocking as it wantedโit didnโt change a thing. He was still out of her reach.
Meanwhile, in the hospital, Jonathan sat with a furrowed brow, reviewing Wayne Wynnโs medical reports.
