Chapter 229: An Unwanted Gift

โ€œHeโ€™ll have a clearer reason to get involved now,โ€ someone stated.

Noticing their concerns, Stone reassured them, โ€œRelax. This friend of mine is one of my own.โ€

Sierra nodded. โ€œWill Kason suspect anything?โ€

โ€œNo need to worry about that,โ€ Mateo chimed in. โ€œIโ€™ve been keeping him busy with a few โ€˜surprises.โ€™ He wonโ€™t have time to think about anything else.โ€

Mateo had caused several explosionsโ€”figuratively speakingโ€”inside Richardson Pharmaceuticals. The entire company was in chaos, and Kason was too occupied dealing with the mess to even consider that someone was looking into the crematoriums.

Seeing that everything was in place, Sierra finally felt at ease.

Johnathan, who had been watching her closely, spoke up. โ€œFeeling better now?โ€

Sierra smiled but didnโ€™t answer. She had spent so much of her life relying only on herself. It was only now that she understood what it felt like to have someoneโ€”friends, allies, a loverโ€”fighting by her side.

Everything was moving in the right direction, and in good spirits, she said, โ€œI really appreciate everything you guys have done. Letโ€™s have dinner together later. Weโ€™ll cook at home this timeโ€”no takeout.โ€

Since Sierra had already made up her mind, Johnathan naturally had no objections. He got up to go with her to buy groceries, but Sierra stopped him.

โ€œIโ€™ll go with Dickson. You stay here with Mateo and the others. They donโ€™t need me to keep them company.โ€

Completely indifferent to his friends, Johnathan grabbed Sierraโ€™s hand and walked straight out the door. There was no way he was letting her go out alone right now. As far as he was concerned, Dickson was uselessโ€”might as well not be there at all. With Johnathan taking over, Dickson was left behind. He didnโ€™t bother arguing and stayed with Mateo and the rest.

Mateo leaned back on the couch and grinned. โ€œMight as well relax and enjoy this rare moment of being served by our dearโ€ฆโ€

Over the past few days, Dickson had gotten familiar with Mateo and no longer felt as intimidated. He couldnโ€™t help but ask, โ€œWhy do you call Mr. Johnathan that?โ€

Mateo shot upright and declared, โ€œYou donโ€™t think heโ€™s a munt? Iโ€™ve never met anyone more dog-like than him.โ€

Dickson hesitated. โ€œBut you guys seem close?โ€

Mateo and Stone exchanged a look, both seeing the same helplessness in each otherโ€™s eyes.

โ€œThatโ€™s because we grew up together,โ€ Mateo muttered. โ€œAnd then we got tricked.โ€

Stone, ever the blunt one, added, โ€œAnd when we realized we couldnโ€™t beat himโ€”physically or strategicallyโ€”we had no choice but to follow him.โ€

Dicksonโ€™s world shattered a little. So thatโ€™s how it was?

Johnathan and Sierra finished shopping quicklyโ€”mostly because Sierra did all the choosing. Left to his own devices, Johnathan would have just grabbed two packs of instant noodles. Those guys werenโ€™t picky anyway, and in his opinion, giving them instant noodles was already a sign of great respect.

As they were about to leave, Johnathan suddenly remembered something he hadnโ€™t bought yet.

โ€œWait here. Iโ€™ll be right back.โ€

His car was custom-madeโ€”safe and secure. But what he didnโ€™t expect was that the moment he left, someone knocked on the window.

Sierra instinctively looked up, and her expression immediately darkened. As if sensing her reaction, the person outside smiled and knocked again.

Shane.

Sierra quickly regained her composure and slowly rolled down the window. The moment she did, she was met with Shaneโ€™s usual charming, but utterly insincere, smile.

โ€œThese days, itโ€™s really hard to get a chance to see you.โ€ He smirked.

Sierra didnโ€™t respond. She simply watched him with wary eyes. Shane might look harmless now, but he had never played by the rules. She had suffered at his hands too many times to let her guard down.

Seeing her tense expression, Shane chuckled. โ€œRelax. Iโ€™m not going to eat you.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s keep this short. Otherwise, Mr. Johnathan will be back soon.โ€ His voice was casual, as if he and Sierra were simply old friends catching up.

โ€œIโ€™m leaving Maviston soon,โ€ he continued. โ€œWeโ€™ve known each other for quite some time, so before I go, I have a little gift for you. Interested?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Sierra refused without hesitation.

โ€œShh, donโ€™t be so quick to turn me down.โ€ Shane pressed a finger to his lips. โ€œI think youโ€™ll like it.โ€ Then, with an almost playful wave, he turned to leave. But just as he was about to step away, he paused and looked back.

โ€œBy the way, are you really sure you know everything about the man you sleep next to?โ€

Sierraโ€™s body tensed.

โ€œDonโ€™t touch him,โ€ she glared at Shane.

Shane let out a short laugh and walked away. If he didnโ€™t leave now, Johnathan really would be back, and he wasnโ€™t interested in a direct confrontation. At least, not yet.

Chapter 229: An Unwanted Gift

When Johnathan returned, he found Sierra sitting in the car, lost in thought.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ He scanned the area but didnโ€™t notice anything unusual.

โ€œShane was just here,โ€ Sierra said, her voice calm. โ€œHe said he has something to give me.โ€

She didnโ€™t hide anything from him and recounted the encounter. Her mind kept turning over the possibilitiesโ€”what exactly was Shane planning to give her? She had refused, but knowing Shane, that wouldnโ€™t stop him from delivering it anyway.
