Chapter 225: The Deal
โYou know, new drugs always need test subjects,โ Kason explained, his voice smooth as ever. โThese are all volunteers.โ
Volunteers! Sierra almost laughed out loud. Kason actually had the nerve to say that with a straight face?
โWe have signed agreements with all of them,โ he added. โThey willingly consented.โ
Sierra raised an eyebrow. โThatโs all?โ
Kason smirked. โMore or less.โ
He was lying. She could tell. Everything he had shown her so far was what he wanted her to seeโthe kind of research that, while unethical, could still be justified under the right circumstances. The real horrors were hidden elsewhere. But where? This was the lowest level; there was no deeper floor.
She frowned slightly, deep in thought.
โSomething on your mind?โ
She hadnโt noticed Kason leaning in until his voice was practically against her ear. Sierraโs instincts kicked in. She immediately stepped back, hand twitching toward her pocketโbut she stopped herself just in time.
She met Kasonโs gaze without hesitation and said, โI was just thinkingโฆ Money really can buy anything.โ
Kason blinked in surprise. Then he burst into laughter. โThatโs right! Money can even buy life itself!โ
His amusement faded slightly, and he sighed, shaking his head. โI wasnโt lying before, you know. If you had agreed earlier, your grandmother could have been saved.โ
Sierraโs fingers curled. She lowered her gaze, her voice even. โIt was her choice. I respected it.โ
โYouโre so damn stubborn,โ Kason shook his head. Then, suddenly, he grinned. โSo? What do you think? Worth joining?โ
Sierra pretended to hesitate. Finally, she gave a small nod. โFine.โ
Kasonโs grin widened.
Chapter 225: The Deal
Sierra tilted her head, lips curling slightly. โI am interested in a new project.โ
Kasonโs eyes darkened with excitement. For him, Sierra wasnโt just a person; she was an investment. Her talent was rare. If he could pull her into his world completelyโ
โLetโs head to my office to finalize things.โ
Just as they sat down, the phone on Kasonโs desk rang. He picked it up, listening intently. As he did, Sierra noticed something. His expression changed. And twiceโtwiceโhis eyes flickered toward her. Her pulse quickened. Shane. That phone call had to be from Shane.
Kason hung up without saying much. She didnโt ask. Instead, she leaned back in her chair and said, โBefore we continue, I have conditions.โ
Kason raised an eyebrow.
โI get to pick my research focus. And I want fifty percent of the profits.โ
Kason let out a short laugh. โFifty percent? Do you even know how much money weโre talking about?โ
He thought she was being greedy. But reallyโshe was testing him. And the fact that he didnโt immediately agree told her something important. There was someone above himโKason wasnโt the only one making decisions here. As she expected.
Kason leaned back, looking her over with new scrutiny. He was still thinking about that phone call. The voice on the other end had been Shaneโs. One sentence: โDonโt contact me again.โ Then, the call ended.
Chapter 225: The Deal
Shane had been working with them for years. Why cut ties now? What had changed? His first suspicion had been Sierra. After all, she was the only new factor in this equation. But now? Looking at the way she was fighting for a better deal? The way she was obsessed with profit? She didnโt seem like someone working against him. Just a ruthless businesswoman. Maybe, maybe he had been too paranoid.
Kason exhaled. โFine,โ he said. โI canโt approve this on my own. Iโll need to discuss it.โ
Sierra smirked. โDo it quickly.โ
She stood, ready to leave. Then she paused. โOh, one more thing,โ she said casually. โThat dog. I want it.โ
Kason looked at her, amused. โWhy?โ
Sierraโs lips curved. โIโm curious. Letโs see if it really only stays loyal to its first owner.โ
Kasonโs grin returned. โYouโre full of surprises.โ But he didnโt refuse.
