Chapter 194: New Year, Old Grudges
Sierra followed Lilyโs gaze and saw Jonathan rolling up his sweater sleeves, donning an apron, and bustling about in the kitchen like the perfect domestic man. Who could imagine he was the youngest professor with such a homely appearance? A smile curled at the corners of her mouth as she said, โHe really is good to me!โ
After dinner, they started discussing the upcoming New Year celebrations. With just over twenty days left, this would be the last New Yearโs Sierra would spend with her grandma, so she wanted to make it lively. Sierra, Dickson, and Lily discussed the festivities with great enthusiasm, each suggesting different things to do.
Jonathan felt somewhat out of place. From their conversations, he could sense their anticipation and nostalgia for the New Year. But for him, the New Year meant trouble, meant having to face countless insincere people at the large family mansion. He felt like he and they were not celebrating the same holiday.
Sierra noticed Jonathanโs silence and waited until Grandma had gone to sleep to ask, โWhatโs wrong? Donโt you like the New Year?โ
Jonathan shook his head. โItโs not about liking or disliking; it just doesnโt mean much to me.โ
Hearing this, Sierra said, โI loved the New Year as a kid because it meant I could eat good food and, more likely than not, avoid getting beaten for a few days.โ
It was ironic; even gamblers took breaks for the New Year. James had no place to gamble, so naturally, he didnโt lose money, and their home was unusually peaceful.
โWhen I was young, I loved sweets. Grandma would secretly buy me some but made a rule that I could only eat a few each day.โ As Sierra reminisced about her childhood New Years, nostalgia filled her eyes. Even though her life back then was tough, she had many memories to cherish; looking back, whether good or bad, they were all part of her nostalgia.
โWhat about you? What were your New Years like?โ Sierra asked.
Jonathan had been listening to her talk about her childhood celebrations and hadnโt expected her to turn the question on him. Images of feigned emotions flashed through his mind, and he felt he had nothing good to say. He shook his head. โMy New Years were boringโjust a bunch of people getting together and putting on a show.โ
He didnโt want to elaborate, and Sierra could guess the scene well enoughโmany family members, each with their own agendas. She didnโt press further and didnโt ask if Jonathan would stay for the New Year. She knew the answer; he had already said he would go back. It was normal; his family letting him stay away this long was already unusual.
Sierra didnโt bring up New Yearโs again, only cautioning Jonathan, โYouโre tough, but be careful.โ
โShaneโs a madman; you canโt think of him like a normal person. He might do something unpredictable.โ
โAlright,โ Jonathan agreed, his fingers gently pinching Sierraโs neck. He didnโt like it when Sierra mentioned Shane. After talking a bit more, Jonathan returned to his place, not trying to coax Sierra to join him since he knew she needed to stay with Lily. Surprisingly, he was developing empathy.

Back in his room, Jonathan took a shower, changed into clean clothes, and then dialed Mateoโs number. โHowโs that investigation on the Goodman family lunatic going?โ he asked.
Mateo had called him about Shane the other day, but when he saw Yaron about to harm Sierra, he had hung up and rushed over, forgetting about it until he ran into that madman again today.
On the phone, Mateo teased, โOh, you finally remembered it?โ
Jonathan wasnโt in a hurry and didnโt care much for Mateoโs sarcasm. Ignoring the jibe, Jonathan simply stated, โI broke his hand today.โ
Mateo exclaimed in surprise, โWhy would you provoke that lunatic?โ
Jonathan scoffed, โWhy? Canโt I handle him?โ
Mateo choked up a bit; Jonathan really could stir up troubleโhe wasnโt afraid of the Goodman family. But Shane wasnโt so simple. Realizing this, Mateo spoke more seriously. โNo jokes, Shane is more complicated than we thought. You need to be careful.โ
As Mateoโs tone grew grave, Jonathanโs expression turned serious. โGo on.โ
โYou know the Goodman familyโs standing in Albanos. I found something hidden, uncertain, but I think itโs true.โ
โShane might not be Percivalโs son; he could be Octaโsโฆโ
