Chapter 136: Feasting on Fears

Jonathan edged closer to Sierra. โ€œAre you rejecting me because youโ€™re afraid Iโ€™ll get hurt, that something might happen to me?โ€

Sierra avoided his gaze, offering no reply, but her expression said it all.

Jonathanโ€™s mood was good; he smirked, โ€œToday was just an accident.โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t an accident!โ€ Sierra asserted. โ€œEven if today was, there will be other thingsโ€ฆโ€ She had seen too much of Shaneโ€™s handiwork.

โ€œSo what?โ€ Jonathanโ€™s voice was commanding. โ€œYou think Iโ€™m afraid?โ€

โ€œBut I am afraid! Jonathan, Iโ€™m scared!โ€ It was the first time she admitted her fearโ€”not for herself, but for him.

Something fluttered in Jonathanโ€™s heart, tickling him intensely. He lifted his hand to her lips, pressing gently. โ€œDonโ€™t bite; youโ€™ll bleed.โ€

Startled, as if buried, Sierra stepped back, dodging his hand. โ€œJonathan, stay away from me!โ€

With that, she opened the door, slipped inside, and shut it behind her, as if closing off her heart.

โ€œTak!โ€ Jonathan clicked his tongue lightly, somewhat sighing as if unsure what to do with Sierra. โ€œWhat a stubborn girl!โ€ he murmured under his breath.

Only when the footsteps outside faded did Sierra finally exhale slowly.

โ€œSierra, are you okay?โ€ Dickson, noting her distressed look, was full of concern.

Sierra shook her head. โ€œIโ€™m fine. Dickson, try to stay indoors as much as you can.โ€

Regaining her composure, Sierra recalled her conversation with Shane earlier that day and frowned. โ€œNo matter who asks you out, donโ€™t goโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOkay!โ€ Dickson agreed. โ€œBut, Sierra, whatโ€™s really going on?โ€

Having already shared many things with Dickson, Sierra didnโ€™t keep him in the dark about Jonathanโ€™s injury today. โ€œThis might involve you too.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not afraid! Sierra, is that person also the one who harmed my sister?โ€ Dickson inquired. Sierra nodded. Dickson had become much more composed these days and seemed to have matured instantly, so she didnโ€™t worry about him acting rashly and revealed Shaneโ€™s identity.

โ€œHis name is Shane; heโ€™s a prison warden. He handed your sister over to Kason, that scumbagโ€ฆโ€

A flash of anger crossed Dicksonโ€™s eyes, but he forced himself to endure. โ€œSierra, how did he manage it? Doesnโ€™t anyone know?โ€ he asked.

Sierra shook her head. โ€œI donโ€™t know, heโ€™s just too cunning.โ€

โ€œAndโ€ฆ I suspect others are involved.โ€ Otherwise, Shane couldnโ€™t have kept this under wraps.

โ€œDickson, promise me, donโ€™t rush things; weโ€™ll look into this slowly.โ€

Dickson clenched his fists. โ€œI know! Sierra, donโ€™t worry, I wonโ€™t act impulsively.โ€ He was determined to find all those responsible for harming Daphne.

โ€œKason is a pervert, Sierra, donโ€™t get near him. Iโ€™ll go,โ€ Dickson said. His face noticeably paled at the thought, clearly recalling his own sufferings. Yet, he still said it: he couldnโ€™t let Sierra face that danger. โ€œNo way!โ€

Sierra patted Dicksonโ€™s hand to calm him. โ€œKason is not like Brendan, he only likes women. Moreover, I suspect heโ€™s using them for human experiments.โ€ That explained why she had shown her talents in front of Kason. If her suspicions were correct, there would undoubtedly be a complete industry chain behind Kasonโ€”people taken for experiments, discarded when used up. Or maybe used by him before being sent for experiments.

โ€œDickson, I need you to do something now. Check the prison records for people whoโ€™ve disappeared or died mysteriously over the years. Be careful not to let anyone notice,โ€ Sierra instructed. She entrusted this task to Dickson, partly to keep him occupied and distract him, and partly because of his strong aptitude in computer technology, something she had discovered while tutoring him. She had already suggested that Dickson focus on this area.
