When the Flame of Love Fades

Chapter 10: Itโ€™s Me

Yaronโ€™s smile froze. It took him a moment to find his voice. โ€œSierra, are you mad at me for not helping you?โ€

He continued, โ€œI really did try. I even helped find a lawyer for you. But you ran someone over, Sierra. Thatโ€™s not something a lawyer can just fix. There was nothing I could do.โ€

โ€œEnough!โ€ Sierra cut him off. Any more of his nonsense, and she was going to throw up.

She suddenly realized how well Yaron and Denise matched. They were both fake and manipulative.

โ€œStop bringing up the past. From now on, stay away from me.โ€

She had no interest in wasting her time on him, but Yaron didnโ€™t seem to understand.

โ€œSierra, are you mad? Sierra, Iโ€™m really sorry! Sierraโ€”โ€

She ignored him completely. When he saw that, Yaron instinctively reached out and grabbed her armโ€”only to freeze when he noticed the scars on her skin.

Before he could say anything, Denise arrived.

โ€œSierra, you and Yaron?โ€

โ€œDenny!โ€ Yaron quickly let go of Sierra and turned to Denise, scrambling to explain. โ€œI just came out of the lab and saw your sister. I was so surprised.โ€

Watching the scene unfold, Sierra felt disgusted. It was always like this. Yaron would act close to her in private, showing concern that went beyond simple friendship. But the moment Denise was around, he would immediately create distance, as if Sierra was some kind of disease.

Sierra had no intention of paying him any attention, but he just had to keep pushing his luck.

Her gaze swept over Yaron and Denise before she curled her lips into a smirk. โ€œYou two make a great match.โ€

One was a snake, the other a phonyโ€”a perfect couple.

Yaronโ€™s eyes widened in shock. He had never expected Sierraโ€”the pushover who was always so easy to manipulateโ€”to say something like that.

Instinctively, he wanted to chase after her, but when he glanced at Denise, he stopped himself.

Denise frowned and looked at Yaron. โ€œYaron, Iโ€™ve told you before. Thereโ€™s no way weโ€™d ever be together. Sierra likes you, and I would never take something from her. So stop acting like this.โ€

With that, Denise huffed and ran after Sierra, leaving Yaron standing there, his expression dark and frustrated.

Sierra arrived at the lab administration officeโ€”her meeting place with Misty. The door was open, but she still knocked lightly.

A warmth flickered in Sierraโ€™s eyes. She recognized that voice. Back when she was struggling with a problem, she had reached out to Misty for help. It was this voice that had led her to the answer she needed. Hearing it again now felt strangely familiar.

She stepped inside and saw a tall figure dressed in a white lab coat. On most people, a lab coat would look oversized, but on him, it fit perfectlyโ€”exuding an effortless sense of refinement. Long legs, a strong build that even the lab coat couldnโ€™t hide. And his faceโ€ฆ

It was the most handsome face she had ever seen. Impossible to describe with words. His sharp features should have made him look intimidating, but the silver-framed glasses softened the harshness, giving him an air of quiet elegance. The Xander family had always had good genes. Bradley had the polished look of a corporate elite. Evan was the cold, untouchable type. Sean was a celebrity, a face that fans called godly, with millions of people chasing after him, calling him their husband. But compared to the man in front of her, they all lost.

Sierra hesitated for a moment before calling out, โ€œMisty?โ€ She couldnโ€™t connect the person in front of her with the Misty she knew. She had always assumed Misty was much older. Their conversations had always carried a sense of patience, wisdom, and unwavering confidence.

The man turned to look at her.

โ€œItโ€™s me. Youโ€™re โ€˜Phoenixโ€™?โ€

As Sierra took him in, he was also studying her. It had been a long time since he had logged into that forum. After finishing his class, he had noticed a notification about his old group coming online. But when he entered the forum, he couldnโ€™t find the group anymore. That was when he happened to see Sierraโ€™s post asking for a lab.

He helped her on a whimโ€”just like how he had first met his research group years ago. He hadnโ€™t expected the person he helped to be so young. And beautiful. More than that, he recognized her. That morning, he had watched her go head-to-head with someone.

Remembering how sharp her words had been, he chuckled, his voice warm. โ€œThe name suits you.โ€

Sierra smiled slightly. She knew he had misunderstood. She had chosen the name โ€˜Phoenixโ€™ because she wanted to rise from the ashes. But she didnโ€™t explain.

โ€œMy name is Sierra,โ€ she said instead. โ€œAre you a professor here?โ€

โ€œJust a visiting lecturer. I occasionally teach a class. You can call me Mr. Yeager.โ€

โ€œMr. Yeager,โ€ Sierra said easily. Then, getting straight to the point, she asked, โ€œAre you giving me access to Northwind Universityโ€™s lab?โ€

Jonathan shook his head with a slight smile. โ€œI donโ€™t have that kind of authority. The lab belongs to a friend of mine. His family owns one of the best labs here, and I spoke to him about it.โ€

He continued, โ€œHis younger brother also works at the university. I asked you to come so you could meet him. Itโ€™ll make things easier in the future.โ€

Sierra nodded, appreciating his thoughtfulness. Jonathan made a call, and they waited for his friend to arrive. As they waited, he casually asked, โ€œWhat are you planning to research?โ€ Since he was acting as the middleman, he needed to ensure Sierra wasnโ€™t doing anything illegal.

Sierra didnโ€™t hide it. โ€œI want to work on a few medicines, mainly focused on organ regeneration.โ€

Jonathan raised an eyebrow. Even experienced specialists wouldnโ€™t throw around claims like that so easily. He was about to ask more when the office door opened, and a voice rang out.

โ€œMr. Yeager!โ€

At that sound, Sierraโ€™s expression instantly turned cold. Denise didnโ€™t even notice her. Her eyes were locked onto Jonathan, overflowing with admiration. She didnโ€™t bother hiding it.

โ€œMr. Yeager, Iโ€™m studying biochemistry now! Iโ€™ll be able to take your classes soon.โ€

โ€œMs. Xander.โ€ Jonathan nodded politely.

Watching their interaction, Sierra frowned slightly. Just then, another voice interrupted them.

โ€œJonathan, I brought my brother over. Heโ€™s in charge of the lab now, so you can discuss everything with him.โ€

Bradleyโ€™s words cut off mid-sentence. His gaze landed on Sierra, and his expression shifted to one of surprise.

โ€œSierra? What are you doing here?โ€

Sierra didnโ€™t react. If anything, she wanted to ask the same question. Looking at the Xander siblings gathered in the room, she quickly pieced things together. So Mistyโ€™s lab was actually owned by the Xander family. And Mistyโ€ฆ was friends with Bradley?

A strange feeling settled in her chest. She didnโ€™t know what to call it, only that the world suddenly felt too small.

Jonathan looked between Sierra and Bradley, surprised. โ€œYou twoโ€ฆ. know each other?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s my sister,โ€ Bradley said instinctively. Then, after a pause, he corrected himself, pressing his lips together. โ€œMyโ€ฆ other sister.โ€

Jonathan hadnโ€™t expected that. He had known Bradley for years and had heard plenty about his sisterโ€”but never about another one.

Bradley had no time to explain. His gaze sharpened as he looked at Sierra.

โ€œAre you done yet? I told you no, so now youโ€™re trying to get a lab through someone else? What exactly are you trying to do? Destroy it?โ€

โ€œI already apologized about your grandmother. What else do you want?โ€

Sierra glanced at the Xander siblings, then at Jonathan. Her voice was cold.

โ€œMr. Yeager, never mind. I wonโ€™t bother you.โ€

With that, she turned and left. If she had known the lab belonged to the Xander family, she wouldnโ€™t have come in the first place.

โ€œSierraโ€”โ€ Bradley started, frustrated. โ€œWhatโ€™s with her attitude?โ€

Jonathan watched her leave, then turned to Bradley with a neutral expression. โ€œYou must have spoiled her too much.โ€

For a brief moment, Jonathan frowned slightly.

Outside the office, Sierra pulled out her phone. She hesitated, then dialed a number. When the call connected, she spoke quietly.

โ€œItโ€™s me.โ€
