Chapter 430

No wonder Maeve had never heard Loren mention his father. The royal family was secretive about Wrenโ€™s husband. Now, she understood why. The man who stole โ€œEranciaโ€™s Roseโ€ and abandoned her must have been truly heartless.

As a woman, Maeve didnโ€™t judge Wren but felt sympathy for her, despite the choices Wren had made that went against royal expectations.

In the top-floor suite, the entire floor was reserved for just one person, filled with every luxury and specialized equipment to aid Wrenโ€™s recovery.

Tom led Theo into the inner room, where the soft sounds of a piano drifted out. A woman with long golden hair braided over one shoulder sat at the piano, dressed in a simple white silk gown. Her slender figure emanated a quiet grace.

โ€œWren,โ€ Tom said gently, holding Theoโ€™s hand as they approached. โ€œI came to visit, and I brought a little guest.โ€ Wren paused her playing, looking over at them. Her green eyes, strikingly similar to Lorenโ€™s, held a hint of sadness. โ€œWhy bring a child here?โ€ she asked softly, her voice almost ethereal.

Theo looked up at her, noticing how much she resembled Tom. โ€œHi, Auntie! Iโ€™m Theo, Tomโ€™s good friend!โ€ Theo said, his voice sweet and clear. โ€œIโ€™m also a doctor, a really good one! Tom brought me to help you.โ€ Wren chuckled. โ€œDo you have a medical license?โ€

Theo pulled a stack of certificates from his pocket, dropping papers everywhere. โ€œHold on. Iโ€™ll find the right one!โ€ Theo exclaimed.

With Theoโ€™s stack of credentials, he looked like a tiny hustler. Tom stifled a laugh behind a cough.

โ€œAha! Here it is!โ€ Theo held up a certificate proudly.

Wren smiled, her sadness softening. โ€œSo youโ€™re really qualified. How do you plan to treat me?โ€

โ€œNo rush.โ€ Theo moved closer, peering up at her. โ€œWren, was that Moonlight Sonata you were playing? My mommy loves that song. I want to learn it so I can play it for her. Will you teach me?โ€

Wren, used to stiff royal courtesies, was charmed by Theoโ€™s open-hearted warmth. Though just a child, he was earnest and engaging. Wrenโ€™s heart softened.

Wren nodded gently. โ€œOf course.โ€

Theo settled beside her with a grin. โ€œYou first.โ€

Soft, tender music filled the room again.

An hour later, Theo and Tom left the ward.

โ€œTom, Wrenโ€™s illness is more in her heart than her body,โ€ Theo said, pacing with his hands behind his back like a wise old doctor. โ€œItโ€™s like a candle thatโ€™s still burning but hollow inside.โ€ Tomโ€™s expression grew solemn, but Theoโ€™s serious little walk made him smile.

โ€œCan she get better?โ€

โ€œPhysically, yes, but I canโ€™t fix whatโ€™s in her heart. I havenโ€™t studied that part yet.โ€

Tom sighed. โ€œOf all the doctors, youโ€™re the only one who truly has a chance of helping her. My mother and I only wish for her to be healthy again.โ€ Curious, Theo looked up. โ€œHow did Wren end up like this?โ€

As the elevator doors opened, Tom led him in. โ€œBecause she trusted the wrong person.โ€

โ€œWhat happened?โ€

โ€œWhen my sister was young, sheโ€™d sneak out of the palace. Mother tried to stop her, but the more she was punished, the more Wren rebelled. Eventually, those who held grudges against the royal family saw her as an easy target. They set up an โ€˜accidentโ€™ as a warning. Thatโ€™s when she disappeared,โ€ Tom said.

Theoโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œThen what?โ€

โ€œShe was on the run, injured and unable to return. A man saved her, and they fell in love. We found her five years later, but only after sheโ€™d been in a car accident. That triggered her lost memories to return.โ€

โ€œWhat about Wrenโ€™s lover?โ€

โ€œHim?โ€ Tom scoffed. โ€œHe left and never looked back.โ€

Theoโ€™s little face twisted in anger. โ€œWhat a jerk! How could he just abandon her?โ€

Tom sighed, agreeing silently. His sister had risked everything for Loren, only to be left behind. Tom gently patted Theoโ€™s head. โ€œFor the sake of Wrenโ€™s reputation, letโ€™s keep this story between us, alright?โ€ Theo nodded seriously. โ€œI wonโ€™t say a word.โ€

Theo wasnโ€™t sure why, but something about Wren felt familiar, drawing him in. Thatโ€™s why heโ€™d asked her to teach him the piano, a perfect reason to return and โ€œhelpโ€ her.

Touching his chin, Theo pondered, a little theatrically, โ€œIs this what people called fate?โ€

It was nearly ten by the time Maeve and Byron arrived back at the villa with the kids. Food had been kept warm in the kitchen, ready to be served. The children had filled up on snacks at the hospital, so there was no worry about them going to bed hungry. Maeve sipped her soup, her mind wandering back to something Loren had mentioned, filling her with a strange sadness. Byron placed a piece of steak on her plate, his voice calm. โ€œStop overthinking. Just eat.โ€

Maeve blinked, surprised. โ€œHow did you know I was overthinking?โ€

โ€œYour face says it all,โ€ Byron scoffed.

Maeve pouted, nibbling the steak heโ€™d given her. Taking a bite of her vegetables, she sighed. โ€œByron, if you were a royal heir, would you give up the throne for love?โ€

Byron raised a brow. โ€œWhereโ€™s this coming from?โ€

โ€œNever mind. You probably wouldnโ€™t understand love anyway.โ€ Maeve shook her head, realizing her question was silly, and went back to her food.

Byron rolled his eyes, placing a piece of shrimp in her bowl. โ€œItโ€™s going to be a long day. Fill up your stomach.โ€

Maeveโ€™s heart skipped, a sense of unease creeping in.
