Chapter 427
Maeve felt like she was back in school, being scolded by the principal. The man before her didn't look much older than his twenties. He wore a dark blue, high-end suit with a matching vest. Tall and lanky, his chiseled features were striking. He looked vaguely familiar.
Maeve didn't dwell on his familiarity. She quickly explained that she hadn't jumped from the building to attempt suicide; sheโd escaped a malicious confinement.
His expression softened upon hearing she wasn't suicidal. A flicker of sympathy crossed his dark brown eyes as he saw her wet and distraught. He picked up his jacket, brushed it off, and offered it to her. He then produced some bills. "Here, take this. Go home quickly. Don't do anything so risky again."
"No, thank you," Maeve said, waving her hand. "I'm fine. I accidentally bumped into you. My family will be here soon. Thank you for your kindness."
He didn't insist, placing the jacket in her hand before leaving. She wanted to return it, but he was already across the street before she could even call out to him.
About ten minutes later, Byron arrived. Seeing her soaked and wearing a strange man's coat, he knitted his brows.
"Who did this to you?"
Maeve glanced at the sleeping children in the backseat and whispered, "I was targeted by a crazy woman. She threw dirty water on me and locked me in the bathroom. I jumped out the window and ran."
"Jumped out the window?" Byron's dark eyes narrowed as he leaned closer. "Are you hurt anywhere?"
Maeve prevented him from examining her more closely. Grabbing his hand, she shook her head, her ears reddening. "I'm okay. I just bumped into someone. He lent me his jacket." That manโs words sounded rather old-fashioned.
