Chapter 723 Elevator Shock
The woman with the leek pie bristled, her pride flaring. โWhat, you think Iโm beneath you? So fancy boutiques donโt allow leek pies now?โ With a sharp snap, she hurled the pie onto the floor.
Yunice caught the splatter in the corner of her eye โ green filling spilled across the tiles like vomit.
Her stomach lurched, gagging uncontrollably.
She bolted upright. โWhereโs the restroom?โ she asked the clerk, voice tight.
โUp one floor, turn left โ mall restroom.โ
Yunice didnโt even say thank you. She pinched her nose and hurried out of the store.
โMissโฆโ Gill emerged with clothes in hand, wrinkling her nose. โWhat on earth is that smell?โ
The clerk quickly apologized, explaining it was being cleaned up.
Gill scanned the store. โWhereโs Ms. Yunice?โ
โShe went to the restroom, I think,โ the clerk said.
Gill dropped the clothes and rushed after her.
Yunice pressed a hand to her chest, face pale. She leaned against the elevator panel, jabbing the button for up.
A soft chime, the doors slid open. She stepped inside without looking, shutting her eyes as the nausea swelled.
โYou donโt feel well?โ
The familiar voice made her snap her eyes open.
Wyatt.
A flicker of fear crossed her gaze before she masked it with calm. โโฆThe smell of leeks got to me.โ
Wyatt studied her closely, his expression hardening. โYou were never this delicate before.โ
โIโm human. Humans have reactions.โ Her tone was sharp, defensive.
His eyes locked on her. โAre you pregnant?โ
Her mind stalled for three beats. Then she scoffed. โPregnant? Not every pregnant woman gets sick, and not every sick woman is pregnant. Understand?โ
Wyatt nodded slightly, then muttered as the doors slid shut, โTrue. Youโve only been away half a month. No way itโs someone elseโs child. If you are, it would only be mine.โ
Yunice ignored him.
He said nothing more either, though the thought settled heavy in his chest. He would never let her bear such risks casually.
The elevator reached her floor. Yunice straightened, ready to bolt the moment the doors opened.
But suddenly, the digital display flickered โ then scrambled into nonsense. A shrill alarm pierced the air.
The car jolted violently, lurching up and down.
Yunice gasped, her body thrown off balance โ straight into Wyattโs chest.
His arms wrapped tight around her. He pressed his palms to her ears, shielding her from the screech.
The cabin shook harder. Instinctively, she burrowed deeper into his embrace.
One arm locked her against him, the other slammed down on the emergency button.
Moments later, the elevator screeched to a halt.
Yunice blinked, realizing her entire face was buried against him.
She jerked her head up, hair mussed, eyes wide like a startled cat.
Wyatt bent his head, voice low. โIt wasnโt me. I was already inside.โ
He hadnโt planned this encounter any more than she had.
Flustered, she pushed her hair behind her ear, and stepped out of his space.
The doors creaked open and she darted out, making straight for the restroom.
Inside, the nausea had passed, but her pulse still raced. She turned to the sink to wash her hands โ then froze. Blood streaked her fingers.
Blood?
Her mind flashed back โ she had clutched his arm during the jolts. The wound there wasnโt healed. Sheโd torn it open again.
She turned the tap with frustration. Ridiculous. A simple malfunction and I panic like a child. Divorced yesterday, clinging to him today.
Her thoughts were cut off by a noise outside.
She looked up just as Wyatt appeared, one hand dragging a caution cone to block the entrance. Then, without hesitation, he walked into the womenโs restroom.
After a long pause, his voice dropped, cold and direct. โWhatโs wrong with you?โ
