Chapter 705 The Trap and the Run

Yunice turned away, wiping a tear from the corner of her eye with the back of her hand.

Wyatt said nothing.

Of course she was crying.

His chest tightened. He reached out and gripped her shoulders with both hands, blurting, โ€œDidnโ€™t you say you wanted to go to the Johnson family? Still want to go?โ€

Sure enough, Yunice paused and looked up, the sorrow in her eyes clouded by a flicker of hesitation. Then she nodded.

Wyatt sighed inwardly.

Sheโ€™d baited him.

She must have known all along where she stood with Oscar. That tear hadnโ€™t been weaknessโ€”it had been leverage.

Sheโ€™d asked him to โ€œlet her brother come homeโ€ not out of pure emotion, but to trigger him, to push him to reveal everything he really thought about Oscar. Then sheโ€™d shed a single tear to make him panic. And just like that, he was left with no good choice: either let Oscar return, or take her to hunt Paul and Nora.

Otherwise, sheโ€™d just sit there, sad and silent, drowning in tears and heartbreak.

Wyatt blinked hard and fought back his frustration. Sheโ€™d outplayed him again, and there wasnโ€™t a damn thing he could do about it.

They had barely climbed into the car when Wyattโ€™s phone rang. It was Jordan.

โ€œWyatt, the Johnson familyโ€™s surrounded by the police.โ€

Wyattโ€™s eyes flew to Yunice. She looked completely unsurprised.

He stared at her for a long moment, then said tightly into the phone, โ€œGot it.โ€

After hanging up, he let out a slow, deep breath. โ€œYou couldnโ€™t wait?โ€

Yuniceโ€™s voice was calm. โ€œI just wanted to be sure.โ€

Inside the Johnson family estate, the sound of sirens sent a jolt of panic through the house.

Paul jumped to his feet. โ€œWho called the cops?!โ€

He grabbed Nora by the arm and yanked her toward him. โ€œYou said this place was safe! Why are they here?! Did you call them?!โ€

Nora yanked herself free, glaring. โ€œWhat would I gain from getting you caught?โ€

Paul chased her for a few stepsโ€“but a hand came out of nowhere and yanked him backward.

Nora didnโ€™t even turn around. She sprinted forward and shoved herself into a tight hiding place.

Only after crawling in and pulling the door shut did she realize Paul hadnโ€™t followed.

But she didnโ€™t care. The police had the place surrounded now. Every man for himself.

A moment later, there was a creak.

The cabinet door flew open.

A maid from the Johnson familyโ€™s courtyard stood there, staring directly at her.

Then she turned and shouted, โ€œNoraโ€™s here! I found Nora!โ€

By the time Wyatt and Yunice arrived, Nora was already in handcuffs, her arms pinned behind her back as she was dragged out the front gate.

They watched silently as she was shoved into a police car.

Wyatt stepped forward. โ€œJust her? What about Paul?โ€

Nora looked every bit like a hunted dog, miserable and furious. โ€œI donโ€™t know. We split up when we ran.โ€

Yunice turned to the officers. โ€œI reported Paul. Why are you arresting her?โ€

Nora didnโ€™t have any formal charges against her. On what grounds had she been detained?

โ€œSheโ€™s connected to another investigation,โ€ one officer explained. โ€œWe need to take her in for questioning. Are you her relatives?โ€

Yunice shook her head. โ€œNo.โ€

Nora shot her a look before being shoved into the car.

Yunice held onto that look. It wasnโ€™t longing or jealousyโ€“it was pure resentment.

Perhaps it wasnโ€™t just about Wyatt anymore. Maybe having a face so similar to Yuniceโ€™s had become a curse. Maybe Paulโ€™s obsession with that face had made Nora hate the original even more.

Either way, it didnโ€™t matter.

The search of the Johnson estate turned up nothing. Paul had vanished without a trace.

Wyattโ€™s expression darkened. โ€œHeโ€™s got help."

And right as he said it, he looked down and met Yuniceโ€™s frosty stare.

โ€œI swear, it wasnโ€™t me,โ€ he said immediately.

Yunice said nothing. Her gaze was cold and sharp as glass. She turned and climbed into the car without waiting for him, stepped on the gas, and drove off without a word.

Wyatt was left on the side of the road, speechless, furious, and completely alone.

He hadnโ€™t done anything. Paul wasnโ€™t his problem. Why the hell was she leaving him behind?

Grumbling, he called Jordan to come pick him up.

When he finally caught up to Pavilion Hall, Sister Lin told him Yunice had packed her bags and gone to the Crawford family estate.

Wyatt drove straight there.

Freya was out on the terrace, holding a thin cigarette, her face full of amusement. โ€œYunice? Sheโ€™s not here.โ€

She took a puff and gave him a knowing look. โ€œLet me guess. You did something stupid and pissed her off?โ€

Wyatt snapped, โ€œI didnโ€™t say I wouldnโ€™t catch Paul. And I sure as hell didnโ€™t help him escape.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€ Freya tapped her phone. She already knew everything.

โ€œYou know what they say,โ€ she added. โ€œDonโ€™t ignore the old folksโ€˜ adviceโ€“or youโ€™ll learn your lesson the hard way. Mr. Carl tried to warn you. You just didnโ€™t listen.โ€
