Chapter 656: Farewell to the Past

Wyatt continued, โ€œEvery time my mom said she couldnโ€™t go on, I begged her. I told her if she died, Iโ€™d die with her. I had nothing left to live for in this world anyway.โ€

His voice lowered. โ€œShe felt bad for me, so sheโ€™d change her mind. Thatโ€™s how we made it another two years. But I guess, eventually, she really couldnโ€™t take it anymore.โ€

โ€œShe lied to me, said she was craving meat, and asked me to find some for her.โ€

โ€œI left the house andโ€ฆโ€

Wyatt fell silent. Even though he didnโ€™t finish the sentence, Yunice already knew how that story ended.

It took him a moment to compose himself. When he looked up again, he finally noticed Yuniceโ€™s cool, distant eyes had gone red. Tears shimmered at the corners.

Wyatt drew in a sharp breath and gently brushed her eye with his thumb, visibly frustrated. โ€œThat was a long time ago. No one can mess with me now, and no one dares mess with you either. We should be done with the past. What are you crying for?โ€

Yunice lowered her gaze, hiding the emotions in her eyes.

Wyatt changed the subject. โ€œDid you go back to the dorm today?โ€

What he really wanted to ask was whether she had seen the recorder.

Yunice deflected. โ€œThe potโ€™s boiling.โ€

Wyatt immediately sprang into action, using oven mitts to lift the lid off the steamer and retrieve the hot ceramic bowl inside.

A strong aroma of ginger tea filled the room instantly.

For a second, Wyattโ€™s expression went distant, like the smell had pulled him into a wave of memories.

It was the first time heโ€™d made this since his mother died.

He used a small fan to cool the ginger tea. โ€œEat while itโ€™s hot, then get some rest. A good sweat will fix you right up.โ€

Yunice followed his instructions, then rinsed her mouth and returned to bed.

Wyatt sat at her bedside, watching over her.

After a while, Yunice opened her eyes. โ€œI canโ€™t sleep with you staring at me.โ€

Being watched made it impossible to relax.

Wyatt took out his phone. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll look at my phone, not you. Go to sleep.โ€

Yunice closed her eyes again.

She had only planned to pretend to sleep for a bit. She wasnโ€™t on her period, and she didnโ€™t feel that uncomfortable.

But after drinking the warm ginger tea and with the room so quiet, she actually dozed off.

Wyatt stayed at her side. Once he confirmed she was really asleep, he finally allowed himself to look at her freely.

Yuniceโ€™s eyelashes were beautiful.

With her eyes closed, she looked peaceful and sweet.

Wyatt had the urge to reach out and touch her lashes. But just as his fingers hovered near, he hesitatedโ€”he didnโ€™t want to wake her up and risk her cranky morning mood.

He reluctantly pulled his hand back.

Jordanโ€™s call came in just then, but Wyatt hung up before it could even ring once.

He checked that Yunice hadnโ€™t stirred, then switched his phone to silent.

He messaged Jordan on WhatsApp instead.

โ€œWyatt, the Saunders family is on the move again. One of our guys just got wordโ€”Owen took a sample to the hospital for a compatibility test. We donโ€™t know whose sample it was yet.โ€

Owen had developed liver cancer due to complications from a viral infection.

A transplant could save his life.

When the hospital issued a critical illness notice, Owen had ignored it. Wyatt thought he had given up on treatmentโ€”but it turned out he was secretly getting tested.

In liver transplants, family members are usually the first choice for donors. If no one in the family matches, the patient has to go on a donor list, which is often like looking for a needle in a haystack. Many people die waiting.

If Owen was testing for compatibility, he mustโ€™ve used a family memberโ€™s sample.

His living relatives included Oscar, Yunice, and Lily.

Jordan added, โ€œEven if Owenโ€™s an idiot, he probably wouldnโ€™t dare use the madamโ€™s sample. He should knowโ€”even if sheโ€™s a match, thereโ€™s no way heโ€™d get past you.โ€

โ€œBut the worry isโ€ฆโ€ Jordan hesitated, โ€œwhat if the madam volunteers? Wyatt, even you couldnโ€™t stop her, right?โ€

Wyattโ€™s eyes turned cold and dark. โ€œIf he dares ask, Iโ€™ll rip out his heart, liver, spleen, and lungs."

Jordan sighed. โ€œBut what if the madam insists? Thatโ€™s still her brother. How could she not feel torn? Wyatt, if you try to stop herโ€”even if itโ€™s out of loveโ€”she might resent you.โ€

It was her brotherโ€™s life. No matter how strained their relationship was, he was still one of her few blood relatives left.

People were complicated like that. Even deep grudges could vanish in the face of life and deathโ€”especially for emotional women.

Wyatt didnโ€™t respond.

Because Jordan had voiced the exact thing he feared most.

He texted Jordan back: โ€œCut off Yuniceโ€™s informants. Donโ€™t let her find out Owenโ€™s doing a compatibility test.โ€

As long as Yunice didnโ€™t know, he could handle the problem before Owen ever got the chance to ask.

In Wyattโ€™s mind, the worst-case scenario was that Owen turned out to be a match with Yunice.

If that happened, Owen was a dead man walking.

Yuniceโ€™s body was already so delicate, Wyatt wouldnโ€™t even let her have children.

And Owen wanted her liver?

He must have a death wish.
