Chapter 656: Farewell to the Past
Wyatt continued, โEvery time my mom said she couldnโt go on, I begged her. I told her if she died, Iโd die with her. I had nothing left to live for in this world anyway.โ
His voice lowered. โShe felt bad for me, so sheโd change her mind. Thatโs how we made it another two years. But I guess, eventually, she really couldnโt take it anymore.โ
โShe lied to me, said she was craving meat, and asked me to find some for her.โ
โI left the house andโฆโ
Wyatt fell silent. Even though he didnโt finish the sentence, Yunice already knew how that story ended.
It took him a moment to compose himself. When he looked up again, he finally noticed Yuniceโs cool, distant eyes had gone red. Tears shimmered at the corners.
Wyatt drew in a sharp breath and gently brushed her eye with his thumb, visibly frustrated. โThat was a long time ago. No one can mess with me now, and no one dares mess with you either. We should be done with the past. What are you crying for?โ
Yunice lowered her gaze, hiding the emotions in her eyes.
Wyatt changed the subject. โDid you go back to the dorm today?โ
What he really wanted to ask was whether she had seen the recorder.
Yunice deflected. โThe potโs boiling.โ
Wyatt immediately sprang into action, using oven mitts to lift the lid off the steamer and retrieve the hot ceramic bowl inside.
A strong aroma of ginger tea filled the room instantly.
For a second, Wyattโs expression went distant, like the smell had pulled him into a wave of memories.
It was the first time heโd made this since his mother died.
He used a small fan to cool the ginger tea. โEat while itโs hot, then get some rest. A good sweat will fix you right up.โ
Yunice followed his instructions, then rinsed her mouth and returned to bed.
Wyatt sat at her bedside, watching over her.
After a while, Yunice opened her eyes. โI canโt sleep with you staring at me.โ
Being watched made it impossible to relax.
Wyatt took out his phone. โThen Iโll look at my phone, not you. Go to sleep.โ
Yunice closed her eyes again.
She had only planned to pretend to sleep for a bit. She wasnโt on her period, and she didnโt feel that uncomfortable.
But after drinking the warm ginger tea and with the room so quiet, she actually dozed off.
Wyatt stayed at her side. Once he confirmed she was really asleep, he finally allowed himself to look at her freely.
Yuniceโs eyelashes were beautiful.
With her eyes closed, she looked peaceful and sweet.
Wyatt had the urge to reach out and touch her lashes. But just as his fingers hovered near, he hesitatedโhe didnโt want to wake her up and risk her cranky morning mood.
He reluctantly pulled his hand back.
Jordanโs call came in just then, but Wyatt hung up before it could even ring once.
He checked that Yunice hadnโt stirred, then switched his phone to silent.
He messaged Jordan on WhatsApp instead.
โWyatt, the Saunders family is on the move again. One of our guys just got wordโOwen took a sample to the hospital for a compatibility test. We donโt know whose sample it was yet.โ
Owen had developed liver cancer due to complications from a viral infection.
A transplant could save his life.
When the hospital issued a critical illness notice, Owen had ignored it. Wyatt thought he had given up on treatmentโbut it turned out he was secretly getting tested.
In liver transplants, family members are usually the first choice for donors. If no one in the family matches, the patient has to go on a donor list, which is often like looking for a needle in a haystack. Many people die waiting.
If Owen was testing for compatibility, he mustโve used a family memberโs sample.
His living relatives included Oscar, Yunice, and Lily.
Jordan added, โEven if Owenโs an idiot, he probably wouldnโt dare use the madamโs sample. He should knowโeven if sheโs a match, thereโs no way heโd get past you.โ
โBut the worry isโฆโ Jordan hesitated, โwhat if the madam volunteers? Wyatt, even you couldnโt stop her, right?โ
Wyattโs eyes turned cold and dark. โIf he dares ask, Iโll rip out his heart, liver, spleen, and lungs."
Jordan sighed. โBut what if the madam insists? Thatโs still her brother. How could she not feel torn? Wyatt, if you try to stop herโeven if itโs out of loveโshe might resent you.โ
It was her brotherโs life. No matter how strained their relationship was, he was still one of her few blood relatives left.
People were complicated like that. Even deep grudges could vanish in the face of life and deathโespecially for emotional women.
Wyatt didnโt respond.
Because Jordan had voiced the exact thing he feared most.
He texted Jordan back: โCut off Yuniceโs informants. Donโt let her find out Owenโs doing a compatibility test.โ
As long as Yunice didnโt know, he could handle the problem before Owen ever got the chance to ask.
In Wyattโs mind, the worst-case scenario was that Owen turned out to be a match with Yunice.
If that happened, Owen was a dead man walking.
Yuniceโs body was already so delicate, Wyatt wouldnโt even let her have children.
And Owen wanted her liver?
He must have a death wish.
