Chapter 578 Buried Landmines

A storm of speculation swept through the internet, and with it came a wave of deep dives into the personal histories of Morgan, Maine, and Oscar.

Surprisingly, Oscar came out the cleanest. His private life was uneventfulโ€“heโ€™d spent the past ten years in the lab, leaving no dirt for netizens to dig up.

But Maine? She practically set a landmine for herself. People dug up stories of her bullying classmates back in elementary school, and how sheโ€™d gone through a string of relationships during middle school.

One girl even came forward claiming Maine had once come between her and her boyfriend. She called Maine a two-faced fraud who used the excuse of being โ€œone of the guysโ€ to flirt with close friendsโ€™ boyfriends. The girl even leaked chat logs, painting a picture that sounded alarmingly plausible.

Yunice could only marvel at how strange and diverse the world truly was.

Maine once pointed at me and called me a homewrecker. Back then, I felt ashamed. Insecure. Like I didnโ€™t belong. But now? Look whoโ€™s the real hypocrite. People really shouldnโ€™t take themselves too seriously.

Meanwhile, Maine was about to lose her mind.

She paced restlessly around Noraโ€™s apartment while her phone buzzed and rang non-stop from where it lay on the bed.

The calls were from her parentsโ€“no doubt to scold her.

After all, her testimony in Morganโ€™s favor had dragged the entire Zach family down with her. Even Zach Corpโ€™s public image was tanking.

They couldnโ€™t understand why Maine insisted on getting involved in the Johnson familyโ€™s mess.

Maine didnโ€™t dare answer, not until she figured out a way to fix this.

When the battery finally died and the phone fell silent, she felt a moment of relief.

โ€œNora, Iโ€™ve sacrificed so much to help you and Morgan. You better win this. If you donโ€™t, I wonโ€™t even have a home to go back to.โ€

Nora was gripping the parallel bars in her rehab setup, drenched in sweat as she forced herself to move forward step by step.

After lying in bed for three years, her mind was awake againโ€“but her body needed intense physical therapy to return to what it once was.

But she hadnโ€™t made it halfway across the bars before she collapsed with a sharp cry, falling to the ground.

The thud of bone hitting floor made Maine flinch. She rushed over and helped her up, choking up.

โ€œNora, you canโ€™t rush this! Youโ€™ll only end up breaking something, and then your recovery will take even longer!โ€

Clutching her leg, Nora gritted out, โ€œI just hate being this useless.โ€

Maineโ€™s voice was tight with emotion. โ€œI get it. I do. But even if you break yourself trying, what good does it do? He wonโ€™t care. He wonโ€™t even come see you! He knows how much you love Morgan, and he still chose to protect Yunice and her brother. He doesnโ€™t care if you and Morgan live or die! If he hadnโ€™t pressured the police so hard, I never wouldโ€™ve had to lie on the stand!โ€

Nora stared at Maine, moved to tears. โ€œWhy are you doing all this for me?โ€

Everyone else had only cared for her because of Wyattโ€“and they abandoned her just as quickly when Wyatt turned cold. Only Maine had stood by her. Whether she was in a coma or drowning in despair, Maine had always been there.

Can friendship really drive someone to do this much?

Maineโ€™s voice cracked. โ€œYouโ€™re up against Wyatt. If I donโ€™t help you, who will?โ€

Nora said, โ€œBut what if I drag you down too? Wyattโ€™s protecting Yunice like his life depends on it. Heโ€™ll take this case all the way to court. I heard he even brought in the special investigation teamโ€ฆโ€

โ€œLike itโ€™s some huge national caseโ€“please,โ€ Maine scoffed. โ€œTheyโ€™re only involved because someone pulled strings.โ€

They both knew who Wyatt was aiming at.

Maine grew impatient with Noraโ€™s helpless look and leaned in to whisper an idea in her ear. โ€œNora, listen to me. Hereโ€™s what you need to doโ€ฆโ€

These days, Wyatt and Yunice were together around the clock. She barely had a moment alone.

Madam Mary had come by twice trying to smooth things over but hadnโ€™t even gotten to see Wyatt.

After her failed visit, she returned home and saw Nora sitting in her wheelchair. Without a word, she slapped her across the face.

โ€œI shouldโ€™ve just let you die in that coma. Waking up turned out to be even more useless.โ€

Noraโ€™s face twisted from the blow, but she didnโ€™t say a word.

She was used to this kind of treatment in the Johnson family.

After Madam Mary stormed off, Mr. Johnson came forward playing the good guy.

โ€œNora, apologize to your grandmother.โ€

Expressionless, Nora turned her head and said flatly, โ€œSorry, Grandma.โ€

Madam Mary gave a cold snort and rolled her chair away.
