Chapter 540 What You Donโ€™t Ask For

Elianna scratched her head in frustration. โ€œUghhh, I was up all night gaming until 7 am. Iโ€™ve only slept two hours. Wyatt, come on, be niceโ€”let me sleep. I swear I wonโ€™t even come downstairs. I definitely wonโ€™t pick a fight with her.โ€

She slumped forward, nearly falling asleep with her forehead against the doorframe.

โ€œWyatt,โ€ Yunice called from downstairs, โ€œstop bothering her.โ€

Wyatt came down the stairs and said to Yunice, โ€œCome to the office with me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not going,โ€ Yunice replied. โ€œIโ€™m making medicine today.โ€

Wyatt followed her into the kitchen. โ€œWhat kind of medicine?โ€

โ€œWhisperblend. But Iโ€™m still missing one ingredientโ€”rhino horn. Itโ€™s rare on the market.โ€

Wyatt paused.

Yunice was sorting herbs into a bamboo tray. When he didnโ€™t respond for several seconds, she looked up and added, โ€œIโ€™ll ask Mr. Carl later. Maybe he has some in storage.โ€

Wyatt leaned against the island counter in front of her. โ€œWhoโ€™s it for? Is it important?โ€

Yunice gave a light smile. โ€œYeah. It is.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t take other peopleโ€™s problems too seriously,โ€ Wyatt said. โ€œDonโ€™t go bleeding yourself dry for someone else.โ€

Yunice didnโ€™t reply. โ€œIf you donโ€™t leave now, youโ€™ll hit rush hour and need a helicopter.โ€

Wyatt let out a hum. โ€œIโ€™m still digging into Oscarโ€™s case. Donโ€™t stress.โ€

Seeing Yunice was busy grinding herbs, Wyatt walked to the foyer, grabbed his coat and keys, and left.

Only after his tall frame disappeared through the door did Yunice look up.

Heโ€™d lied.

He had rhino hornโ€”but didnโ€™t mention it. That meant he didnโ€™t want her to know what it was for.

Whatever. He had enough secrets already. One more wouldnโ€™t change anything.

Yunice called Quinton to apologize. She hadnโ€™t found any rhino horn, so she needed him to keep searching.

โ€œIf it really doesnโ€™t work out,โ€ Quinton said, โ€œjust use water buffalo horn instead.โ€

It would be far less effectiveโ€”but there was no other option.

Yunice felt bad. Maybe if sheโ€™d just asked Wyatt directly, there was still a chance.

But she couldnโ€™t bring herself to throw away her pride like that. Not when she knew heโ€™d say no.

She couldnโ€™t stomach the humiliation of rejection.

But she also couldnโ€™t help feeling like she was letting Bobby down.

Quinton hadnโ€™t hung up yet. โ€œBy the way, that guy I know inside passed along a message. Oscarโ€™s doing okayโ€”hasnโ€™t been beaten or anything. But heโ€™s not in great shape mentally. Keeps saying heโ€™s innocent. That he was framed.โ€

If he was yelling about being framed, but not naming anyone, that meant he didnโ€™t know who had set him up.

That made things harder.

Yunice thanked Quinton for the help.

โ€œWeโ€™re friends,โ€ he said. โ€œDonโ€™t make it sound so formal.โ€

That only made Yunice feel guiltier. She hadnโ€™t done nearly as much for him in return.

After the call, she decided to contact Victor.

Victor worked with Mr. Carl in the medicinal trade. Maybe he had a lead.

โ€œPrice isnโ€™t an issue,โ€ Yunice told him.

Victor laughed. โ€œYou do realize this stuff isnโ€™t about money, right?โ€

He paused. โ€œAlright, itโ€™s not about the price. Iโ€™ll ask around for you.โ€

By noon, Elianna finally dragged herself downstairs, stretching dramatically.

Yunice was at the kitchen island, one hand steadying a stone mortar while the other ground herbs. Her tablet was propped up next to her, streaming a university lecture.

Elianna strolled past her with a casual air. Neither of them acknowledged the otherโ€”they treated each other like they didnโ€™t exist.

Elianna grabbed a bottle of milk from the fridge and drank straight from it, glancing sideways at Yunice.

Seeing Yunice wasnโ€™t starting anything, she relaxed. As long as the house was warm and she had a place to sleep, she didnโ€™t care.

A little later, she came back downstairs with a photo frame in her arms, sat on the couch and started wiping it carefully.

Yunice glanced over. It looked like a memorial photoโ€”probably Eliannaโ€™s dad.

Still, they didnโ€™t interact. Everything was quiet.

When Wyatt came home that night, both women seamlessly resumed their performance and acted civilized.

Wyatt called Yunice to the bedroom. โ€œThe police finished the evidence chain. Your brotherโ€™s fingerprints are the only ones on the knife. Elsie confirmed the assault. Thereโ€™s tearingโ€”but no trace of bodily fluids.โ€

Which meant there was no DNA evidence from the suspect.

That was both good and bad news. Without DNA, the case lacked a complete chain of proof and no conclusive guilt could be established.

But without another suspect, Oscar was still the prime one. Heโ€™d been found at the scene, and the knife only had his prints.

Yunice said, โ€œFingerprints can be planted. If someone used rubber gloves to cut Elsieโ€™s wrist and my brother just happened to pick up the knife, it would explain everything.โ€

Wyatt replied, โ€œThey checked the angle of the cuts. They were made by someone else.โ€

Which ruled out the possibility of Elsie staging the whole thing.

The clues led nowhere. The hotel surveillance had been tampered withโ€”the data was removed, and not even recovery was possible.
