Chapter 540 What You Donโt Ask For
Elianna scratched her head in frustration. โUghhh, I was up all night gaming until 7 am. Iโve only slept two hours. Wyatt, come on, be niceโlet me sleep. I swear I wonโt even come downstairs. I definitely wonโt pick a fight with her.โ
She slumped forward, nearly falling asleep with her forehead against the doorframe.
โWyatt,โ Yunice called from downstairs, โstop bothering her.โ
Wyatt came down the stairs and said to Yunice, โCome to the office with me.โ
โIโm not going,โ Yunice replied. โIโm making medicine today.โ
Wyatt followed her into the kitchen. โWhat kind of medicine?โ
โWhisperblend. But Iโm still missing one ingredientโrhino horn. Itโs rare on the market.โ
Wyatt paused.
Yunice was sorting herbs into a bamboo tray. When he didnโt respond for several seconds, she looked up and added, โIโll ask Mr. Carl later. Maybe he has some in storage.โ
Wyatt leaned against the island counter in front of her. โWhoโs it for? Is it important?โ
Yunice gave a light smile. โYeah. It is.โ
โDonโt take other peopleโs problems too seriously,โ Wyatt said. โDonโt go bleeding yourself dry for someone else.โ
Yunice didnโt reply. โIf you donโt leave now, youโll hit rush hour and need a helicopter.โ
Wyatt let out a hum. โIโm still digging into Oscarโs case. Donโt stress.โ
Seeing Yunice was busy grinding herbs, Wyatt walked to the foyer, grabbed his coat and keys, and left.
Only after his tall frame disappeared through the door did Yunice look up.
Heโd lied.
He had rhino hornโbut didnโt mention it. That meant he didnโt want her to know what it was for.
Whatever. He had enough secrets already. One more wouldnโt change anything.
Yunice called Quinton to apologize. She hadnโt found any rhino horn, so she needed him to keep searching.
โIf it really doesnโt work out,โ Quinton said, โjust use water buffalo horn instead.โ
It would be far less effectiveโbut there was no other option.
Yunice felt bad. Maybe if sheโd just asked Wyatt directly, there was still a chance.
But she couldnโt bring herself to throw away her pride like that. Not when she knew heโd say no.
She couldnโt stomach the humiliation of rejection.
But she also couldnโt help feeling like she was letting Bobby down.
Quinton hadnโt hung up yet. โBy the way, that guy I know inside passed along a message. Oscarโs doing okayโhasnโt been beaten or anything. But heโs not in great shape mentally. Keeps saying heโs innocent. That he was framed.โ
If he was yelling about being framed, but not naming anyone, that meant he didnโt know who had set him up.
That made things harder.
Yunice thanked Quinton for the help.
โWeโre friends,โ he said. โDonโt make it sound so formal.โ
That only made Yunice feel guiltier. She hadnโt done nearly as much for him in return.
After the call, she decided to contact Victor.
Victor worked with Mr. Carl in the medicinal trade. Maybe he had a lead.
โPrice isnโt an issue,โ Yunice told him.
Victor laughed. โYou do realize this stuff isnโt about money, right?โ
He paused. โAlright, itโs not about the price. Iโll ask around for you.โ
By noon, Elianna finally dragged herself downstairs, stretching dramatically.
Yunice was at the kitchen island, one hand steadying a stone mortar while the other ground herbs. Her tablet was propped up next to her, streaming a university lecture.
Elianna strolled past her with a casual air. Neither of them acknowledged the otherโthey treated each other like they didnโt exist.
Elianna grabbed a bottle of milk from the fridge and drank straight from it, glancing sideways at Yunice.
Seeing Yunice wasnโt starting anything, she relaxed. As long as the house was warm and she had a place to sleep, she didnโt care.
A little later, she came back downstairs with a photo frame in her arms, sat on the couch and started wiping it carefully.
Yunice glanced over. It looked like a memorial photoโprobably Eliannaโs dad.
Still, they didnโt interact. Everything was quiet.
When Wyatt came home that night, both women seamlessly resumed their performance and acted civilized.
Wyatt called Yunice to the bedroom. โThe police finished the evidence chain. Your brotherโs fingerprints are the only ones on the knife. Elsie confirmed the assault. Thereโs tearingโbut no trace of bodily fluids.โ
Which meant there was no DNA evidence from the suspect.
That was both good and bad news. Without DNA, the case lacked a complete chain of proof and no conclusive guilt could be established.
But without another suspect, Oscar was still the prime one. Heโd been found at the scene, and the knife only had his prints.
Yunice said, โFingerprints can be planted. If someone used rubber gloves to cut Elsieโs wrist and my brother just happened to pick up the knife, it would explain everything.โ
Wyatt replied, โThey checked the angle of the cuts. They were made by someone else.โ
Which ruled out the possibility of Elsie staging the whole thing.
The clues led nowhere. The hotel surveillance had been tampered withโthe data was removed, and not even recovery was possible.
