Chapter 520 Glass Towers
As they stepped into the banquet hall, the dazzling lights and refracted sparkle from the jewelry were nearly overwhelming.
Yunice rested her hand lightly on Wyattโs wrist and softly asked, โWhere should I go?โ
At events like this, men and women usually separated and handled their own social circles.
But Wyatt said, โYouโre staying with me.โ
Yunice frowned slightly but didnโt argue.
With Wyattโs status, his mere presence drew attention. And as the woman on his arm, she naturally became a subject of whispered scrutiny.
A businessman came up to greet them. โMr. Cooper.โ
Then, turning to Yunice, he added, โMrs. Cooper.โ
Yunice gave a polite smile. โMr. Samuel. Good evening.โ
The man nodded with a smile and began chatting with Wyatt over champagne.
Yunice smiled and listened, though her peripheral vision was busy scanning the room.
She quickly picked up on the glances โ mostly from women โ constantly landing on her.
Some couples talked while occasionally casting looks in her direction.
She glanced down at her phone. Still no message back from Oscar.
Just then, another couple approached. The man started talking with Wyatt, while the woman looked toward Yunice and teased, โMr. Cooper, your wifeโs been standing in those heels for a while now. Must be tiring.โ
Wyatt glanced down at Yunice. She quickly said, โIโll sit for a bit.โ
The woman smiled generously. โIโll join you.โ
Yunice offered a standard polite smile. Just as she pulled out a chair to sit, a flash of brilliant red cut right between them and dropped into the seat beside her.
The woman froze, surprised by the sudden arrival.
Freya waved her clutch playfully and grinned. โMrs. Cooper and I are acquainted. You donโt mind if I sit here, do you?โ
The womanโs expression tightened, but she couldnโt very well tell Freya to leave, had no choice but to sit down too.
Wyatt gave Yunice a look, signaling he was stepping away for a bit.
Meanwhile, the man speaking with Wyatt cast a sharp glance at the woman seated at Yunice's table, an unspoken warning. She looked clearly uncomfortable, as if the task sheโd been assigned had just become ten times harder.
In a place like this, no small talk was meaningless. Every conversation had a motive.
Freya, wedged between Yunice and the other woman, made that motive harder to fulfill.
Freya sipped her champagne, eyes still on the glass, and casually said, โOur little princess from the Crawford family has everythingโplenty of resources, and a reliable man. No point wasting your time on her. Sheโs not getting involved in your little power plays.โ
The woman flushed at being so bluntly exposed.
In any negotiation, success depended on offering what the other lacked. You filled in each otherโs gaps.
But Freya was right โ Yunice had it all: a powerful family, a perfect husband. She didnโt need resources or allies. There was no reason for her to compromise downward.
The woman faltered. She glanced toward the man whoโd sent her over, only to be hit with more pressure from his gaze.
She started to rise โ then sat back down.
Turning to Yunice, she lowered her voice and said, โMrs. Cooper, do you really think your position is secure?โ
Seeing that neither Yunice nor Freya reacted, she continued, โItโs normal for men to be unfaithful. If you donโt start preparing for yourself, youโre the one whoโll suffer later.โ
She leaned in slightly. โMr. Cooperโs father is a perfect example, isnโt he? If heโd been loyal, Mr. Cooper wouldnโt even exist.โ
The implication was clear: even the most respected wives couldnโt stop their husbands from fathering illegitimate children. Was Yunice getting too comfortable too soon?
Still, both women stayed silent.
Undeterred, the woman pushed on. โMr. Cooper isnโt the only one in your life. Sure, no one dares send women his way openly now โ but thatโs not because of you. Itโs because of another woman.โ
Freyaโs brow furrowed, her anger clearly rising.
She hadnโt heard about Nora yet, and was reacting on instinct โ just the thought of Wyatt having another woman ticked her off.
She was about to speak when she felt a hand discreetly squeeze her leg under the table.
It was Yunice.
Freya caught the signal and leaned back in her seat, relaxing.
The woman, frustrated by the lack of response, pressed on. โIโm serious. A few years ago, the Johnson family handed over a daughter they kept hidden. It happened during a dinner. They gave her to Wyatt โ and he took her.โ
She went on. โAfter that, the door was wide open. Everyone followed suit, throwing women at him. When he refused publicly, they started sending them by force.โ
Then she added, โEventually, one of those women showed up in front of the Johnson familyโs daughter. Wyatt completely lost it. Ruined her โ and her entire family. Took them from luxury to rock bottom in a month. That story made the rounds. Youโve heard it, havenโt you?โ
She looked back and forth between Yunice and Freya, desperate for a reaction.
But all she saw were two calm, unreadable smiles.
The more composed they looked, the more the womanโs desperate attempts at sowing discord made her seem like a fool.
