Chapter 48: The Ugly Truth
Wyatt frowned and looked away, clearly displeased. Yunice sensed the shift and looked up at him. He moved toward the window, opened it just a crack to let in some air, and didnโt glance back at her once. Behind her, out of sight, his eyes were clouded with agitation. He couldnโt believe heโd just reacted to Yunice like that.
Yunice didnโt understand. She was about to speak when someone knocked on the door. Jake peeked in, eyes bright as he looked at Yunice first, then said to Wyatt, โWyatt, Madam Johnsonโs awake. She wants to see you.โ
Wyatt gave a quiet response and, with the help of his cane, walked out of the room. Yunice sat up in bed, her eyes following the way he walked.
โHandsome, right?โ She turned toward Jake, who was grinning like a gossiping aunt.
โWyatt is the best-looking man on a cane Iโve ever seen,โ Jake said. โBut donโt stare too much. Heโs petty.โ
Yunice gave a small nod, grateful for the warning. She knew people with disabilities sometimes carried emotional wounds.
Jakeโs gaze drifted to the gash on her face, and he sighed. โDonโt worry about the scar. Even if it doesnโt heal on its own, Wyatt will find the best plastic surgeon to fix it.โ
โHuh?โ Yunice blinked, surprised.
Thinking she didnโt believe him, Jake added, โHe said so himself. I can tellโhe treats you differently.โ
โDoes he!โ
โDefinitely. Heโs not usually like this.โ
โWhatโs he usually like, then?โ
โHeโฆโ Jake stopped mid-sentence, realizing that if Wyatt did like her, he could easily screw it up by saying the wrong thing. โHeโs usually cold. Real cold.โ
Yunice was a little disappointed she couldnโt get more out of him. Just then, Jake took a call. Whatever he heard made him glance at Yunice quickly and nod along.
When he hung up, he said, โMs. Saunders, Madam Johnson wants to see you.โ He rolled in a wheelchair. โCome on, Iโll take you over.โ
โI donโt think thatโs necessaryโฆโ Yunice was still a little dizzy and unsteady, but not so bad that she needed a chair. She could manage.
Jake leaned in, lowering his voice. โThis isnโt about the wheelchair. Itโs about appearances.โ
โShe doesnโt like you. If you look pitiful, itโs harder for her to stay cold.โ
Chapter 48: The Ugly Truth
Yunice gripped her sleeves tightly, feeling exposed as everyone turned to look. Madam Johnson rested in bed. Wyatt stood beside her. Jordan was at the door. Jake stood at the back of the chair.
Yunice was just taking in the room when a sharp face suddenly leaned in close. She pulled back instinctively. A red-haired man scrunched his brow. โDamn. Thatโs ugly.โ
He stepped back dramatically, hands in his pockets, all arrogance. โNo way Iโm marrying that freak. Someone else can take her.โ
Even if she hadnโt seen him before, it wasnโt hard to guessโthis had to be Morgan, the man Lily had called a โperfect match.โ Seeing him stomp around like a lunatic, Yunice thought her injury had actually come at the perfect time. He found her ugly. She didnโt want to marry him anyway.
But she didnโt want to look too smug, so she lowered her eyes and let them go red with tears. Wyattโs face darkened. He looked at Morgan, eyes cold.
What did this guy have that made Yunice work so hard just to marry into this family? She saved Madam Johnson, took the blame, even risked her face. Madam Johnson finally told Morgan to shut up.
Even if she didnโt like Yunice, sheโd saved her life and taken a blow meant for Wyatt. It wasnโt something she could ignore. She looked over at Yuniceโs face. The wound was long, the stitches visible. It was hard to look at, even if she didnโt want to admit it; the injury made her feel a chill in her chest.
To take a hit like that for someoneโฆ either the girl was stupid or she was tough. Madam Johnsonโs expression softened a little. โWill her face recover?โ
Before Jake could respond, Jordan jumped in. โThe cutโs too deep. Even the plastic surgeons said it might not fully heal.โ Morgan laughed out loud. โThatโs great, Grandma. I canโt take this monster but in public. Why donโt we just let Wyatt have herโฆโ
