Chapter 460 A Marriage of Strangers
After finishing in the lab, Yunice returned to Pavilion Hall.
As she changed her shoes at the entrance, she noticed that the pair Wyatt had worn that morning was missing from the rackโhe hadnโt come home.
โMr. Wyatt has a meeting at the officeโhe wonโt be home earlyโฆโ
โMr. Wyatt isnโt at the office todayโฆโ
The two conflicting statements echoed in Yuniceโs mind. She knew Wyatt had lied.
Logic told her not to care. Sheโd never expected fidelity from him anyway. But her chest felt heavy, like someone had stuffed a cotton ball into her lungs.
She picked up her slippers but didnโt put them on. After hesitating for a few seconds, she set them back down on the rack and turned to leave Pavilion Hall.
I need to know for sure.
She went to the underground garage, picked a car, and drove off without informing anyone. Her destination: Gardison Residence.
Kingsley had once helped her track Wyatt beforeโhe knew exactly where that woman lived.
Yunice had a feeling that Wyattโs lie had to do with Nora.
Once she arrived near the area, she ditched the car and proceeded on foot.
After walking a few rounds, Yunice realized the villa was heavily guarded and equipped with high-tech surveillance. Cameras would catch anyone approaching.
She didnโt want Wyatt to know sheโd come, so she returned to her car.
The sky was glowing with streaks of sunset.
Then she saw itโthe villa gate opened, and a familiar car pulled out.
It was Wyattโs. No doubt about it.
Yuniceโs heart dropped.
So itโs trueโฆ
After his car had fully driven off, she took a long detour on foot, just in case they crossed paths and he suspected something.
Because of the roundabout route, she ended up getting home later than Wyatt.
As she opened the front door, she didnโt even have to lift her headโshe first saw a pair of leather shoes by the entrance.
Looking up, she found Wyatt waiting there.
His brow was furrowed. โWhere did you go by yourself? Why are you back so late?โ
Normally, the butler would accompany her on outings.
She was too delicateโwhat if someone tried to snatch her off the street?
Yunice stared at him. Her first instinct was to snap back that he hadnโt come home any earlier.
But she decided it wasnโt worth it.
โI went to visit Melina at the mental hospital,โ she said evenly. โOn the way back I got turned aroundโtook a few wrong turns.โ
Wyatt asked, โWhich car did you take?โ
Yunice gave him a flat look. โThe Alfa Romeo. The one collecting dust.โ
Maybe sensing her irritation, Wyatt didnโt press further. He stepped aside to let her pass.
After dinner, Yunice stood to go for a walk in the garden. Wyatt said, โIโll come with you.โ
Pavilion Hallโs gardens were softly lit with ambient lightingโit looked the same day or night. Yunice strolled slowly. โCan you pull some strings to get my mom released?โ
Wyatt glanced over. โFeeling sentimental?โ
She nodded faintly. โHe has always been good to me. I canโt treat my mother too coldly in front of him. I donโt want to disappoint him.โ
Wyatt said, โThatโs not hard.โ
Yunice added, โShe should be releasedโbut not too easily.โ
โI understand.โ
They walked on in silence.
It struck both of them how little they actually spoke outside of business matters. It was as ifโwhen there was no agendaโthey had nothing in common at all.
If it were Nora, Yunice thought bitterly, heโd probably have his arm around her. Theyโd be talking about work, gossiping about annoying employees, joking about mutual friendsโฆ
But none of that involves me.
Iโve stepped into his world, but never really become part of it.
After the walk, Yunice was the first to suggest going back to their room.
Wyatt didnโt linger outside. After washing up, Yunice was already in her pajamas and lying in bed when he finally came in.
She lay on her side, facing the edge of the bed. She felt the mattress dip beside her.
Usually, when she was lying down, Wyatt would casually place his hand on her stomach like he owned it.
But tonight, nothing.
She felt the mattress shift againโhe mustโve turned over, likely facing away.
Yunice lay on her side, eyes wide open.
This must be what they mean by โsharing a bed but dreaming different dreams.โ
Wyatt had seen Nora today. And now he was lying next to her, the wife he barely touched.
He must be feeling guilty, she thought. Thatโs probably why he wonโt come near me tonight.
